The South Sydney Rabbitohs and Canberra Raiders meet in Dubbo for Sunday afternoon NRL. Join The Roar for live scores from 2pm AEST.

Rugby league returns to the beautiful rural setting of Dubbo, with a jam packed Apex Oval set to host what looms as a crucial clash between two teams hopeful of finals play this season.

Both the Rabbitohs and Raiders have been inconsistent in 2022, with neither club favoured to be a serious threat when the pointy end of the season eventually arrives. Yet with improvement possible, Souths and Canberra will be hoping to turn their seasons around across the next three months and mount something of a charge.

The Rabbitohs went within moments of going down to the Warriors in Round 10, allowing a substantial lead to slip away before eventually claiming the two points. Earlier losses to the Broncos and Wests Tigers have been concerning and whilst scoring points has not been an issue, defensive application and the ability to close out matches has.

Ricky Stuart’s Raiders have been a model of inconsistency and disappointment in 2022, although the superb 30-10 win against the Sharks last weekend has lifted them to the fringes of the eight. A win today could see them only outside the finals’ position on for and against and would also translate into a third successive win for a team that many had written off after five straight losses earlier in the season.

Sadly for the Raiders, influenza has struck the camp, with the squad not having had a full training session together during the week. Jack Wighton is a much-needed addition and Zac Woolford will start at hooker, as Adam Elliott moves back into his usual role as a loose forward.

The Bunnies have had a much more settled preparation yet do lose Jacob Host with a shoulder problem. Trent Peoples moves into the starting 13.

Prediction

South Sydney will enter this match as firm favourites off the back of more consistent recent performances and the illnesses that have made the Raiders’ preparations challenging. Matt Frawley will look to continue his impressive form and along with Wighton in the halves, could hold the key to any potential Canberra success.

Souths will need Cody Walker to add the touch of class required to overcome what will be a committed Raiders’ defence and Kodi Nikorima could well play a key role off the bench.

Rabbitohs by 18 points.

Yes very true, as the current Bunnies for/against at all for this year is a big “1 point” and its going to get worst, this side is a rabble and won't get anywhere. The performances this year signifies who is running the club and what admin we have as we have no chance.

Yes that 50-0 against the Storm last year would have sent a shockwave through the Souths camp

No Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Mark Nichols and then losing JuniorTatola in the first tackle of the game to a raised elbow/forearm most teams would struggle to overcome that list of outs. The 65% completion rate, 13 errors and 48 missed tackles are inexcusable though. So is Dumbo Big Ears complete inability to make adjustments to the side when things are going badly wrong. To state the obvious, Cody Walker isn't a leader. Damien Cook should be the captain in Cam Murray's absence.

Which bit are you struggling with? Let's go the extreme example and say a game was 80% / 20% possession. Do you still think the lesser team deserved the same number of penalties?
