The book of feuds resumes in Round 1, as the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the 40th time. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:55pm (AEDT).

Unlike in previous seasons when the SCG has been used for one-off games, it will host a majority of Roosters games in 2019 as the Sydney Football Stadium is demolished.

This is the 40th meeting between the sides at the venue, and while the Rabbitohs hold a slender advantage historically, there’s not much to split them tonight.

After the Roosters knocked the Rabbitohs out in the preliminary final last year, the Bunnies will have revenge on their minds, and with Wayne Bennett at the helm, they are going to be an intriguing side to follow all season.

South Sydney’s left-side attack is lethal. Cody Walker, Alex Johnston, Greg Inglis and Dane Gagai. The quartet will prove to be the key to South Sydney’s attack, and with Gagai playing in his more prefered wing position, it should allow him to find his touch.

They line up against a defensive combination of Mitchell Aubusson, Latrell Mitchell and Daniel Tupou on that side of the ground. Aubusson might be an elite defender, but Mitchell is error-prone and Tupou has never boasted an amazing defensive presence.

While Souths’ left edge takes all the limelight, it’s Sam Burgess moving into the second row, playing off Adam Reynolds, which makes them equally as dangerous on the right.

That’s not to say there aren’t issues in the Rabbitohs defence, but whether the Roosters can exploit them is another question.

Cooper Cronk is coming off a nasty shoulder injury, and will have to slot back in with Luke Keary in a combination which struggled early last year.

Their partnership is crucial, but Cronk needs to let Keary have equal footing after his grand final appearance.

James Tedesco needs to pick up where he left off in 2018, and their forwards need to be dominant. If they start 2019 like they started last season, they will struggle to match it with their opposition tonight.

The Chooks must be aggressive to shut down South Sydney, and Angus Crichton coming off the bench against his old club could provide some much-needed spark.

It’s also important to note the Roosters are returning from the World Club Challenge in England, which has often left defending premiers slow out of the blocks.

Prediction
If the Rabbitohs left edge clicks with Walker leading the way, Souths will get the job done.

Rabbitohs by 2.

Hey Pickett, who is pretending to have won the comp? The Bunnies won and lets get on with it, next round. It seems that you must have the Mitchell syndrome!

The better defensive team with the same for and against would have a better % margin of victory (or expected win loss) so objectively be the better team. It's hardly going to encourage a wave of defensive focus though given it only applies when you're tied on points and net f/a

21 premierships and none were over the cap and paid for under the table like 2013 and 2018. I'll bet big money you aren't wearing your Roosters jersey or cap around town today. None of the half dozen Roosters "try hards" are anywhere to be seen out my way today. Read my posts champ, I was very clear that this is just one game of many in a very long season. I get the feeling that it could feel even longer for "over the salary cap" overrated chooks though.

My understanding is that it's tries conceded as the next breaker... Storm 2, Rabbitohs 3, hence, Storm first.

"Papi Smurf" asked this in last nights blog, can anyone answer this question? "I just checked NRL.com and the Storm are on top of the ladder! Scott, can you please confirm HOW that is the case if both teams are on a +10 differential and Souths won away while the Storm won at home?" It would be interesting to know the reason(s) why?

Note to self... I think it's the team with the best defensive record that win a differential tie-breaker. Away win should break the tie IMO otherwise the best attacking teams aren't rewarded, only the boring defensive ones.

Good game Sou ffs. Better team on the night. Cook, Reynolds, Murray played awesome. Easts were good in patches and tried hard. Long way to go.

Not sure what you are saying, that you are with the Johns/Gould lax officiating camp or not?

The game has been so stagnate for so long I am pretty much down to watching only Broncs games now along with South Brisbane games. If we see games of just hits ups and second man set plays all season I think I will not even bother with a lot of the Broncs games in the end. I am not interested in watching teams perfect their structure and defensive patterns.

I think I just worked out that the tie-breaker is decided by the team with the better defensive record. It should be like soccer, away wins count for more.

Look at the replay. Radley is tackled gets up behind the tackler and marker and plays the ball with both markers trying to get back onside as he plays the ball. Nicholls still went to sleep in defence.
