Hugely harsh play-the-ball call on Blake Ferguson might be a sign of things to come in 2021

Refs are going to be super tough on incorrect play-the-balls, it seems…

Yours is a simple but very good question, Sylvester. I wonder what players are coached to do? We all know it's drummed into them to get up and play the ball as fast as possible, but does that also involve rolling the ball between the legs and making some sort of pretend motion with the foot towards the ball? Given how often it happens in all NRL games, I suspect players are told to push the rules. In this case Ferguson didn't get away with it

If only they would change the rule and make it black and white. When playing the ball the foot MUST touch the ball.

Is it really that hard to actually play the ball with the foot though?

I'd guess once Souths lose or nearly lose a game on a call like that, the rule will be changed back.

That was ref cold revenge payback for all the times in his life he hasn’t used the foot..unchallengeable so from now on those front rowers better watch their tongues when talking to on field officialdom, or else.

Life’s true great mysteries: - How does dark matter accelerate the expansion of the universe? - Who killed Tupac? - Did the player make a reasonable effort to strike the ball with their foot?
