Uruguay’s giant-killing win over Pacific Island powerhouse Fiji a few days ago has thrown the race for third place (and automatic qualification for the 2023 Rugby World Cup) in Pool D wide open, with Uruguay, Georgia and Fiji all a genuine chance of finishing in that position.

The Uruguayans, currently in the coveted third position, are in the box seat to seal their qualification for the 2023 tournament after their win over Fiji. However, the Georgians will be no walkover. They have a relatively strong domestic competition and have represented at every world cup since 2003.

The Georgians will certainly fancy their chances against Uruguay. They will take plenty of confidence out of their earlier defeat at the hands of Wales in which they managed to score two second-half tries while conceding just 6 – a great effort considering the gulf in class between the two nations.

Prediction
The last meeting between these two sides – way back in 2013 in an IRB Tbilisi Cup fixture – saw Georgia emerge victorious 19-10.

With few survivors from that game in either team, that result will not mean much – this is very much a clean slate for both sides.

I expect Uruguay will be too strong and will have too much confidence after their win over Fiji. But with third place in the group well and truly up for grabs, it will certainly be a close game.

Uruguay by 7.

Fair comment (I am overly excited). I think the reality is that SANZAAR (or at least the NZ & A parts) need Japan. It may not be feasible with time zones, but also think it would be great for Georgia to play against tier 1 countries more, and it would be great as fans to see us play against them too. I just love seeing newer teams improving, and Georgia aren’t getting much love from the 6N crowd. I think they’re an excellent team, and seem to love the sport.

Match Report Georgia have taken the wind out of Uruguay's sails, bringing them back down to Earth after their unexpected victory over Fiji last week by inflicting a 33-7 defeat on the South Americans. It was a strong display from Georgia, particularly up front where they flexed their muscles on many occasions (the many knock ons in this game gave them plenty of opportunities to do so at scrum time). The Uruguayan scrum was completely out of its depth in this match - so much so that even Wales and Australia might be worried by the strength of Georgia at scrum time. The game was a very scrappy affair. Knock ons were aplenty as both sides tried to spread the ball, but ultimately lacked the skill to do so effectively. The young Georgian scrum half Gela Aprasidze was very impressive with his kicking and passing games, and put the Uruguayans under plenty of pressure with his box kicks. Otari Giorgadze was immense too, and won man of the match for his strong performance. The first half was tight, with Georgia taking a slender 12-7 lead into the break. However, the second half was a completely different story, Georgia scoring 3 unanswered tries to finish the game 33-7 victors over Uruguay. This result makes the battle for third place and automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup very interesting too, with Fiji, Uruguay and Georgia all realistic chances to finish third. Thanks for joining me Roarers! Hope you enjoyed the match. Stay tuned for the coverage of Australia vs Wales! Georgia - 33 Uruguay - 7

Australia and Fiji will take Georgia lightly at their peril. 2nd string forwards, treating it as a training run, will get a surprise. Overall thought Barnes, the AR and TMO did a good job. Not sure about the red against 16, but seems to be the way this RWC is ruling. Massive effort from Uruguay. Amateurs with only 4000 registered players. Huge respect

Not sure if the championship is the answer, but they need more exposure to tier one nations each year for sure.

We should expand the rugby championship to include Japan and Georgia. I think they’re both great.

Full Time Knock on from Uruguay. Mamuka Gorgadze gathers the ball and sends it into touch and that's the game! Hard fought win by Georgia over Uruguay. Very scrappy affair - not much of a spectacle. Stay tuned for the Wallabies vs Wales up next! Match report to come. Georgia - 33 Uruguay - 7

Following a red card to a forward you cannot have fair scrums - should be no pushing

Wow, one of these ridiculous red card calls is going to ruin an important final game, mark my word...

16 didn’t follow through with the shoulder, that was mitigating in my mind. Suppose Barnes has to be consistent with the current interpretation.
