A highly entertaining contest has seen the Hurricanes emerge three point winners over a Highlanders side that was 11 points up at one stage in the second half.
It looked as if the Highlanders had all the momentum at 28-17 but tries to Ardie Savea and Ngani Laumape turned things around for the Hurricanes.
The Highlanders had chances at the death to steal a result but failed to do so and suffer another defeat.

The Hurricanes will be keen to bounce back from last week’s heavy defeat when they clash against the Highlanders in Dunedin. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 5:30pm AEDT.
Matches featuring the Hurricanes and Highlanders are always eventful affairs and tonight’s contest should be no different.
With the Crusaders once again running away with the lead in the New Zealand conference, both the Hurricanes and Highlanders are chasing second position and will look to build a gap between the ever-improving Chiefs and Blues.
The Highlanders however are still missing some key All Black stars while the Hurricanes are also down a few players but appear better stocked in the key positions.
Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has named a new midfield for Friday’s crucial derby in Dunedin.
Richard Buckman and Teihorangi Walden have taken over from Patelesio Tomkinson and Thomas Umaga-Jensen in the centres after the Highlanders’ bye week.
The Highlanders are missing three injured All Blacks stars in Aaron Smith, Waisake Naholo and Liam Squire, with Kayne Hammington getting the start at halfback, Matt Faddes on the right wing and Shannon Frizell at blindside flanker.
Openside flanker James Lentjes and lock Josh Dickson also get starts ahead of Dillon Hunt and Pari Pari Parkinson.
Centre Rob Thompson is also back on the bench after six weeks out with injury.
Meanwhile, Hurricanes coach John Plumtree has made two changes to the side that was walloped by the Crusaders last weekend.
Kane Le’aupepe will make his first start at lock ahead of Liam Mitchell while Wes Goosen replaces Matt Proctor in the backline.
Captain Dane Coles remains out with a calf strain while Plumtree also revealed Vince Aso’s pectoral injury would likely end his Super Rugby season.
Goosen will start on the right wing, with Jordie Barrett shifting to outside centre.
Prediction
The Hurricanes will come out with a point to prove after suffering their second heavy defeat of the season to the Crusaders. Both teams will be keen to draw a line in the sand and kickstart their Super Rugby campaigns.
Despite being at home, the absence of class players like Aaron Smith could prove telling in the end as the Barrett brothers guide the Hurricanes home in a tight one.

Yes gotta say Ardie was outstanding, as was Frizzell at times. With Akira, Robertson etc the loosies are really starting to put their hands up.

Since 1 is enough to win a world cup, 3 is plenty!

Full marks to Glen Jackson. Terrific reffing and he let the game go without swallowing his whistle. What a difference that makes eh? Take note Saffa refs, especially the utterly dreadful Seconda who I hope never sees the middle of a rugby pitch again.

The was bad game from the whole hurricanes team mate. Unleash him against England or Ireland behind Aaron Smith sharp passes and its backline he'll be deadly.

Nobody's perfect. Just ask Campo.

Can I suggest you watch Ben Lam against the Crusaders, either game this year will be sufficient. Pat Lam has more chance of playing for the All Blacks again. Adrian Lam even.

Great entertaining match. The best rugby quality in the world when two NZ teams go at it back and forth. Ardie Savea the only consistent good performing player for the Hurricanes. Other All Blacks are a hit and miss when it matters. Ill be very surprised if Hansen and co doesn't consider Lam as one of the wingers for the World Cup. Dude has great power and finishing skills that could be the difference in a tough match, just like what he did here in this match.

Congrats Dc Was at this one Going to be a long frustrating season for our boys Combinations missing at key times, hardly surprising when we play a new lineup every week. Don’t know if it came across on TV but his was a very quick game of code Bender and Lentjes huge for us, Marty Banks a nightmare kicking from hand Highlander tight five always on top I thought, mr jackson clearly did not

Very entertaining game. Lots of brilliant play plus lots of errors as fatigue set in. And Perenara with the one handed pick-up gone wrong. Lucky his forwards saved him from that potentially embarrassing error.

Was a flip a coin match. NZ conference is Crusaders out front, Blues, Canes, Landers in the middle. Chiefs in the caboose.

If it wasn't for ardie, the canes would have been stuffed. He was immense. Our forward pack was utterly ineffective at the set piece, and poor around the park. Thankfully our reserve pack better than the Landers reserve! Beaudy was a little bit better. Really so many errors both sides, not great rugby But thank Almighty Webb Ellis for Ardie Savea

Heart and smarts and teamwork from Highlanders. But Canes star power and a bit of luck got them home. Canes far from a complete team, but has some fantastic individual players. Beuden Barrett coming back into form, but Savea was MVP tonight.

Well done canes, could have gone either way with the end and Li’s effort going astray. Great match. A lot of highlights.

Alan Thanks for commentary - 3 things stand out for me: 1) absolutely great game; 2) never ever seen a sub come on before, AFTER the full time hooter (and close out game for team); 3) Ardie Savea, for my superficial uneducated eye, the standout player in Super Rugby in 2019 - even surpressing my man-crush for Brodie R. Not just AS's skill, his sustained passion. Cheers KP
