South Africa are in the driving for a spot in the final eight if they can snare a bonus-point win over Canada. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary, from 9:15pm (AEDT).

The only thing that could stop the Springboks from qualifying is Italy upsetting New Zealand – and that is about as likely as the moon exploding.

South Africa went down to the All Blacks in their World Cup opener but have since bounced back with comfortable wins over Namibia and Italy.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has made 13 changes to the team that beat Italy on Friday.

With a short turnaround, Erasmus needs to keep his big guns fresh with the quarter-finals ahead.

Damian Willemse will start for South Africa against Canada on Tuesday, less than a week after landing in Japan as a late injury replacement for Jesse Kriel.

Damian de Allende and captain Siya Kolisi are the only two who played against the Azzurri that will start against Canada.

Francois Steyn comes into the centres, Elton Jantjies at fy-half and Schalk Brits into the forward back. The likes of Peter Steph Du Toit, Willie Le Roux and Eben Etzebeth have all been named on the bench.

Canada fullback Andrew Coe, who scored their only try against Italy, will make his first World Cup start.

Coe is one of six changes to the Canadian side, including a first tournament appearance for lock Kyle Baillie.

Prediction
This is going to be one-sided, sadly.

That Red Card was soft. The Canadians were the best soldiers in both World Wars on our side, and they were brave last night with 14 men. In War Canadians 1, Zealanders 2, Aussies 3. Not to dismiss anyone else . They were all great.

Actually the matches are getting closer each world cup. The likes of Japan used to have over 100 put on them, Namibia 140. The reason the scores are better is exposure to the top sides. Isolation is the complete opposite to what is needed.

QF team (IMHO): le Roux, N’kosi, Am, de Allende, Kolbe, Pollard, de Klerk, Kitshoff, Marx, Malherbe, Etzebeth, de Jager, Kolisi (c), du Toit, Vermuelen (vc). Reserves: Mbonambi, Mtawarira, Koch, Snyman, Louw, Jantjies, Steyn, Willemse. If we go 6-2, drop Willemse; add Mostert.

Agreed Harry, Elton could not even make an impact behind a forward moving pack. He is a seriously weak link and should NOT be in the 23 going forward.

Ja, I'm finished with the Kwagga test experiment. It's failed, it continues to fail even against weak teams, and I prefer a big ruck cleaning and ball carrying loosie who is durable to be the backup backup loosie.

I don't think Elton will make the 23 for the QF. I hope not. I think a DW or Frans or even Gelant @ 23 offers FAR more versatility and ball carrying, whilst still (in the case of the first two) giving us GK/DG, and allows us to use a 6-2 smash mouth bully bench. If we get the 80:00 pack smash right, not many teams except NZ or ENG can stand toe-to-toe and survive.

I have a pessimism on Siya’s knee, oh Viking.

MATCH REPORT South Africa have smashed a 14-man Canada 66-7 to book their place in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals. The Springboks demolished their North American opposition, running in nine tries to go top of Pool B ahead of New Zealand. The All Blacks have Italy still to play, but the Boks are through to the next round unless somehow the Azzurri beat the defending world champions and gain a bonus point. The damage was done in Kobe in an electric first half where South Africa scored six tries. Canada was already behind 40-0 when lock Josh Larsen was sent off for a shoulder charge to the head of Thomas Du Toi in the 36th minute. The Springboks started like a house on fire, Damian De Allende crossing after just two minutes. They were in again straight after, S’busiso Nkois gliding over in the corner. It was one-way traffic and then Cobus Reinach grabbed his first try of the night with a chip and chase and some individual brilliance. In the 16th minute Reinach scored again, dummying his way over the line. He then notched his hat-trick, breaking Chris Latham’s World Cup record, after he finished off a fine team break. Warrick Gelant touch downed in the corner before Larsen was marched from the field. Francois Steyn then crossed from an intercept right on half-time to make it 47-0 at the interval. But in the second half Canada improved and took the game to South Africa. They put some pressure on the Boks and it paid off – Matt Heaton diving over after great work by Jeff Hassler. Canada continued to fight fire with fire, before Schalk Brits barged his way through for a five-pointer. Damian Willemse got the Boks next try with a simple overlap on the flank. Frans Malherbe notched the final try of the match with a powerful carry.

Something is seriously wrong with the officiating now. Just pathetic.

World Rugby will need to look at how they structure World Cups in the future. It's just not competitive enough. I might watch for a bit to see if there will be a contest then switch off. There has been a few close games, the rest have been complete shellackings. Maybe a 16 team or even a 12 team event in the future with full qualifiers.

Kolisi for depth? And what about Elton? He even sports an "acceptable" hair cut these days.

This story feels so cliche. I almost suspect this is a pre-planned plot to galvanize the team. Ruffle some feathers so everyone wakes up.

Canada can be very proud of their competitive fire. Brave 2H. SA: Kolisi, Willemse, Steyn, Gelant, and Reinach all fantastic for depth in KOs.

Jaco Kriel is a much better player. Kwagga is a very good Super Rugby player.

Note today the French Captain has fallen out with the coaches and lost the captaincy. Players are aligned with the captain Toulon owner calling for a player revolt, it’s a complete mess. Pretty much means France will make the final, just like 2011

Great first half by Boks - bit sloppy in the second. Some nice touches along the way. Team will be quite different for the quarters

Very clinical first half from South Africa Too many blokes looking to rack up personal stats in the second. Big effort from the Canadians with a man down, time for a quick round of the Lumberjack Song to finish the evening.
