The penultimate game of Super Rugby’s opening round kicks off in Cape Town, with the Stormers hosting the Hurricanes. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 12:05am (AEDT).

After crashing out in the semi-finals last year, the Hurricanes kick off their 2020 campaign on the road, with matches against the Stormers and Jaguares. Last year was another pleasing effort from the Wellington-based team, with 12 wins and three losses, including two victories on the road in South Africa.

While the Stormers came last in the South African conference, that doesn’t do them justice. They finished just two bonus points behind the third-placed Sharks who were on 37, beat all four of their rivals, and held the Crusaders to a draw. Despite the pleasing result against the eventual champions, it was out-of-conference games that cost them last year, with just three wins from eight fixtures.

It’s been a mixed off-season for the Stormers, who’ve released their coach Robbie Fleck, opting instead for John Dobson. They also lose Damian de Allende, Eben Etzebeth, and SP Marais. However, they keep a number of World Cup-winning Springboks, including Siya Kolisi.

The Hurricanes’ big loss is – you knew it – Beauden Barrett. Fletcher Smith takes his place, which is a fair step down in quality. They also lost Nehe Milner-Skudder, who admittedly hasn’t played such a big part in recent seasons, but have pinched Scott Scrafton and Tyrel Lomax from their neighbours, both of whom will start this weekend.

In team news, TJ Perenara and Jordie Barrett will both run on for Jason Holland’s men, in what remains a strong back line with Ngani Laumape, Ben Lam and Wes Goosen. Up front, Gareth Evans, Du’Plessis Kirifi and James Blackwell headline a weaker pack than in seasons past.

Herschel Jantjies and Damian Willemse partner in the halves, Dillyn Leyds and Seabelo Senatla feature in a back line with Jamie Roberts making his Stormers debut. In the forwards, Steven Kitshoff, Pieter Steph du Toit and Siya Kolisi will take on the visitors.

Prediction
The Stormers are traditionally a tough challenge at Newlands, and they do go in narrow favourites, with a strong starting team.

The Hurricanes will have to adjust to life without Barrett, and I think it’ll take a few weeks for them to settle in.

Stormers by seven.

Yep. A lot of the attention is on Beaudy but quite honestly his form for the Hurricanes is often patchy. Personally I think losing Plumtree at the 11th hour was a huge blow and will quite possibly be a negative effect for the whole Super Rugby campaign. The homes games will tell the story if they can salvage some pride - if they're rubbish at home too then they really are in trouble.

Well played Stormers. Very impressive start to the season. Lots of work to do for the Hurricanes - clearly the loss of Plumtree and Beaudy will be a challenge to overcome in the short term. Special mention for the ugly kit the Hurricanes were sporting. Who came up with that? Washed out blue-grey combination is crap. They look more like the Blues than the Hurricanes. Their colours are yellow & black. How hard is it to come up with a few different combinations of those two for home and away fixtures? Grey should be banned for all teams in my opinion.

Good blog. I was on a work junket. Had to rely on you, and friends, and a replay. My initial reaction is that the STO are the SA team most faithfully following the Erasmus-Nienaber blueprint: 6-2 split, bigger loosies, scrum-mad, super speed on the edges, trickery at 15, and a brute midfield ...

Had to win the opener. It sort of went as most predicted. Canes will improve, but it is an unenviable place to start a tournament. This tells us less about the visitors than the hosts. STO can play this brand all season.

Game over! A comprehensive, 27 point victory for the hosts! The Hurricanes came nowhere near their full potential today. Nowhere near. Also, teething problems without Barrett. FULLTIME: Stormers 27 Hurricanes 0

This scrum is burning time. I'm loathe to say this game is beyond the Hurricanes, now the Stormers get a penalty. The Hurricanes can launch a comeback. We know that. 12 penalties conceded just quietly. To 7. 72' Stormers 22 Hurricanes 0

Booth. Stormers on the run, Fifita may be waiting for a break in play, here's Roberts. Who's been quiet. Knocked on after the Canes turn it over. 70' Stormers 22 Hurricanes 0

Hurricanes have survived their yellow cards extremely well, just three points conceded. But the problem is that they've not scored any of their own. Penalty Stormers from the scrum, they look to touch. Fifita is back now. 69' Stormers 22 Hurricanes 0
