I’ll tell you what’s embarrassing: Cheika admitting he didn’t know the rules. Hodge admitting that the Wallabies weren’t prepared for the new high treacle framework. The incessant wailing and faux outrage from every rugby pundit in Australia.
I used to think that Drew Mitchell was a reasonably level headed analyst, but after Hodge was cited he was sure there was no way he’d get suspended, even though it was pretty clear to anyone who had been paying any attention to what WR were saying about player safety and head high contact that he was in trouble.
Rugby Australia needs to find a broadcast partner that doesn’t feel the need to constantly talk about what a “joke” and “embarrassment” rugby is.
As much as I disliked him as a player I think Gal is pretty good on TV. But it's this segment on Channel 9 this morning that was truly embarrassing. Gal made his comment and the rest of the panel shrieked the same view like pre-pubescent girls at a boy band concert. Hodge had plenty of time to line up a conventional tackle but chose to go high and the Fijian guy was taken off after that tackle with concussion. Had it been Michael Hooper getting a head injury from a Fijian tackle I doubt we'd be seeing it the same way. So far the RWC has been a whinge-athon from the coach and armchair commentators. They won’t get results by blame shifting.
