That sounds very reasonable. But when I was reading the live feed of the game I thought you went overboard in attacking Badger. Every second comment was an attack on her. You weren’t the only one but you were the most repetitive. It really stood out.

NRL Round 9 Talking Points: Abuse of Kasey Badger is way out of line - on and off the field

I’m mostly a lurker these days but I have to sign in to thank you for this article, Mike. You’ve offered more food for thought in one article than a month’s worth of ex-players yabbering away on panel shows.

Motion sickness: How the NRL's best are crafting confusion and sending defences sideways

Don’t rugby union fans have anything better to do than troll league stories? Because that’s all you seem to do. Is union really that boring. That’s a rhetorical question; we know it is.

You either don’t watch the news or don’t care about the deaths of Palestinian children. Neither excuse would seem the basis of an informed comment.

That series was a great advert for test cricket and 2-2 was a fair outcome. But after the 2nd test – once England brought in Woakes and Wood and calibrated the level of aggression in their batting – it was mostly one-way traffic. I think they “won” 75% of the sessions in the last 3 tests.
We can pretend that didn’t happen – yay, we retain the Ashes – but the World Champions were made to look pretty average more than once.

Flem's Verdict: Stokes’ spirit of cricket goes out the window over catch while ICC needs to sort out ludicrous ball-swap farce

By pretending to be a Jack of all sports you miss some crucial details: “…once a decade we might get a Cathy Freeman or Steve Bradbury.”
How can anyone seriously compare Bradbury to Freeman? Yes they both crossed the finish line first but all of Cathy’s competitors were still running. One had the weight of a nation’s expectations on her shoulders. The other was lucky he didn’t finish last.

Those claims are over-excited, but it’s a tongue-in-cheek story anyway. I checked Wikipedia for the substance and there is indeed a Manchester link to both Communism and Capitalism.
Friedrich Engles, co-founder of Communism with Karl Marx, developed his ideas and published his influential works while living in Manchester.
The real father of Capitalism was Adam Smith in Scotland. But Manchester was the birthplace of the Anti-Corn League which campaigned for the abolition of the protectionist Corn Laws – which was the start of the free trade movement.

Um, I don’t see why my geographical knowledge is in question. I said “imagine…”. My point was in reference to the moaning about SH players in NH teams like England. I suggested they would look a lot like our team if Polynesia was in their ocean instead of the Pacific. Jeez. Let me know if any of the words are too big.

Cast a look at international team lists and imagine how many SH players they’d have if Tonga and Samoa were located in the South Atlantic instead of the South Pacific!

Saka brace propels England to Iran rout, Mendy fumbles as Dutch beat Senegal, Bale earns Wales draw with US

I have mixed feelings about this question.
On the one hand I want SOO to keep as close to its original conception as the best against the best.
On the other hand, the geographical origin of player ranks has changed a lot in the past 40 years therefore some of the best players in the comp are ineligible for Origin. That is compounded by players choosing to play for other countries to honour their family backgrounds.
Yet I wouldn’t support loosening Origin requirements any more than they are because that would weaken the tribalism which is at the core of Origin’s DNA. What we would end up with is the best against the best but as franchises.
Do we want to watch the equivalent of the Rajistan Royals vs the Delhi Super Kings in State of Origin? I don’t think so.
So keep the tribalism whatever you do. In fact, make the eligibility even tighter so that people will want their kids playing league in Qld or NSW in the hope they’ll be eligible for Origin one day.

Dual in the crown: Why Origin players should also be able to represent Kiwis and England

@Rellum I don’t believe I made any contradiction in what I said. But I do have a more succinct way of putting it:
ODIs are boring!

Why T20 trumps 50-over cricket

It’s no contest that T-20s are the superior form of single-innings cricket. The main reason for me is that there is usually a genuine contest between bat and ball because, even on the flattest pitches, the batting side takes risks.
In contrast, 50-over matches have reached the stage where scores under 350 are regarded as below par. It’s not uncommon for combined 100- over scores of 750-800 runs. Frankly, that shows a ridiculous weighting of batting over bowling. That most of the runs are easy singles and twos to defensive fields makes it even more depressing. The sooner 50-over cricket is put in the dustbin the better as far as I’m concerned.

Why T20 trumps 50-over cricket

That Pakistan fast bowling attack looks sensational. If they can stay healthy it sets up a really interesting Test series when they tour Australia next summer. Maybe the fastest group of touring bowlers since Steyn, Morkel etc a decade ago.

A Curran affair: Pakistan cruelled by Afridi blow as left-armer and Stokes lead England to T20 World Cup glory

Cleary was average at best. He is the halfback equivalent of the flat track bully. Looks a million dollars when his forward pack is on top though.

Kangaroos Tops & Flops: Mal gets the big calls right, but Latrell and Nathan need to do more

It’s certainly on the podium for bizarre. Setting aside the risk of aggravating the injury, even if he could roll his arm over from four paces he would have been a big liability in the field. You can’t hide a fielder in T20.

Busted knee or not, Pakistan needed Shaheen Afridi to play through the pain in the World Cup final

That washout against England flatters those stats.

Your thought process there seems to have hit a roadblock. The No votes did not have the numbers and so the law (LAW) was changed. The people who didn’t want that law to be changed must accept the fact that it has. You don’t get to opt out of any laws you disagree with. I tried that with a speeding fine once. It didn’t work.

NRL Pride Round on agenda for inclusion in 2023 draw despite Manly Seven's objections

It’s funny this came from a real sports journalist. When I saw the heading I assumed it was a rookie roarer musing while on the dunny.
The really funny bit is thinking that a team that got absolutely flogged by NZ and lost its warm up games to England deserves to get into the finals of this tournament. They don’t.

Hey now, New Zealand: Beat Poms and we’ll give back Crowded House, pavlovas, Russell and Phar Lap’s heart

Sure, but you have to start somewhere. By your logic only players who cycle everywhere and refuse to use air transport should have the moral authority to speak up. We’d be talking about Pat Cummins the grade cricketer. More accurately, we wouldn’t be talking about him at all because no-one would take any notice of him.
I’d say he has every right to no longer appear in commercials that promote something environmentally damaging – even if he has the temerity to turn on light bulbs and fly in a plane.

Cummins is doing the opposite of what you claim. He’s making a silent protest – I.e. he says he won’t appear in advertising for this company anymore.

All the noise is coming from people who don’t agree with his beliefs.

This “hypocrisy” argument is just another way of telling people to “shut up”. Even Greta Thunberg – who sailed in boat from Europe to the USA – was accused of hypocrisy.
Cricketers may not have a choice about how their profession is fuelled (air travel, lights etc) but by speaking out they can add to the public pressure to make that fuel cleaner.

It’s refreshing to have a cricket captain with a strong moral compass. Fighting climate change is the global cause of our times. And sporting role models should take a stand. Good on Pat Cummins.

I met Glenn when he was studying – before he played first class cricket – and he was a nice bloke. It’s a shame it went pear-shaped. You could argue he was unlucky compared to the third and fourth chances that some young players were granted. Still, better to have reached the top, if only briefly.
