The Central Coast Mariners can keep hopes of an unlikely charge to the top two alive when they take on the Newcastle Jets in the F3 Derby. Stay up to date with their A-League clash with live scores on The Roar from 7:05pm (AEST).

The Mariners’ resurgence has been one of the stories of the A-League season. After three consecutive wooden spoons, the side has surged up the ladder to be one of Melbourne City’s main challengers for supremacy in 2020/21.

Five points behind the second-placed Sydney FC, albeit with a game in hand, their destiny is out of their own hands for that coveted top-two spot. However, Alen Stajcic’s can seal third spot at least with a win over one of their main rivals.

For the Jets, an ugly season can’t end quickly enough. Sitting last on the table, and without a win since February, it’s hard to see them making up the four points that separates them and the eleventh-placed Melbourne Victory. Pride is all that is at stake here.

The Jets and Mariners clashed just a fortnight ago in Newcastle, with the Mariners emerging with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

I think you have got your head in the wrong place mate. Where do McCarthur fit Genrau, Danny, and de villa in a midfield? There all CAM's. Might be an attacking force but will most definelty be even more unbalanced then they were this year. Plus the bulls are a step back down from the Mariners at the moment. Mariners clean sweeped them pretty convincingly as well. Dosen't make sense for Danny he'll warm the bench just like he did at Sydney.

the wheels are in motion already at macarthur. Milligan retired, davilla & de de silva signing announcements imminent. They could be a real force next year

Mariners actually dominated but Newcastle had a lot more players back in defence thanks to Maurgois,Hoffman and Jpordan ODhoherty getting up and down the pitch. Bozanic it seems his main motivation was to get back in the Socceroos, this match he was mostly standing around with the Socceroos squad about to play, Mariners they had 2 to 3 attackers on 5 to 7 defenders. The two goals Newcastle had they had 3 on 3 on the first and something similiar on the second. Bozanic was standing there for the first with Stenseness when they should have both got back, and second one Bozanic gave up chasing. Newcastle 16 year old as good as any of their other players. and Marguios is capable of heaps of running. If you want to play a back three with wingbacks then thats the main requirement two fit wing backs able to cover all the ground. Thinking your following the latest coaching trend by doing it seems to be the reason its being done though.

as consistently the lowest spenders, they should always be in the bottom 3. The bottom 3 every year should be 12. Mariners, 11. Newcastle, 10. Adelaide. and thats based on what they spend on there squads compared to the rest of the league. the fact that these 3 teams have great success over the years shows how good they are with the little money they have. im not a mariners hater by any stretch of the imagination, in fact they're my favourite NSW team - but they have massively over achieved by a scheduling draw that severely favoured east coast teams this season

Technically, I don’t think any team has a “rightful” spot at the foot of the ladder. As A-League fans, we’ve been conditioned into thinking this. The Mariner’s have broken the stereotype this season, & it’s angered a few traditionalists. The question we should be asking is: how can they continue to be competitive?

A few weeks ago when CCM were running first, their coach said “Even though we have played extra games, the ladder reflects where we should be”. He’s correct. They are spiralling downwards & will be KO’ed come finals time. Over achievers.

Looks like the Cinderella team will be taking its rightful spot back near the bottom next season. De Silva to the bulls next season announcement in the coming days and a host of other departures to follow soon

Richly deserved by the Jets! Newcastle, take a bow. The Mariners has a rare off-night. Something doesn’t feel 100% right. Players seem to have their minds elsewhere.

Mariners have Western United at home again on Saturday so should get the points required to confirm finals barring a crazy last 10 in this one

Indeed. The Jets have brought their A-game, & the Mariners have had a brain fade.
