Match result:

The Newcastle Jets have upset the Melbourne Victory 2-0 infront of a rather poor crowd in Geelong.

Keisuke Honda started the match on fire getting 18 touches in the first 10 minutes in what was a period much dominated by the Big V.

The Victory controlled the game for most of the first 30 minutes but it was during five minutes of dominance from the Jets that Johnny Koutroumbis who has dealt with health problems throughout the whole year, hammered in a goal from the back post.

The Jets controlled the rest of the half but the Victory came out firing and you wouldn’t have much confidence that Newcastle would hold on.

It was in the 73rd minute when James Donachie earnt his first yellow card that things were not as smooth from the Victory.

The first killer blow was when James Donachie had to make a desperation push in early extra time earning him his 2nd yellow card sending him off and giving the Melbourne Victory the title of first A-League team to reach 50 Red Cards.

Dimi Petratos was the star of the show with his hammer shot on his left foot from outside the box which floated in the top corner at the 96th minute.

Final score
Melbourne Victory 0
Newcastle Jets 2

Match preview:

Melbourne Victory will do battle with the Newcastle Jets at GMBHA Stadium in Geelong. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Melbourne Victory in third place one spot behind the all-important 2nd place position currently occupied by Sydney FC. They also are seven points at the time of writing ahead of fourth placed Adelaide United.

The other dog in the fight, the Newcastle Jets are running out of time to make the finals as they are five points behind the sixth placed Wellington Phoenix. They also sit six points ahead of the seventh placed Western Sydney Wanderers.

Melbourne Victory will be weakened by the suspension of Centre Back George Niedermeier who was suspended it last week’s Melbourne Derby.

I’ll be interested to see if Melbourne’s defence can cope with what is a very unique attack that Newcastle have which consists with Kaine Sheppard and Jair who are more striking players, playing as Wide Mids.

Prediction
The Jets have never really looked like a finals team this year and Melbourne Victory always have been. The Jets are on their last gasp but will be too weak for the Victory.

This is the info on the Victory wiki site https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Victory_FC : "Although Victory are supported across the whole Melbourne metropolitan area, as well as regional cities in the state, it is based primarily in the city centre. The club's home ground is the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, playing a majority of home matches at the venue, with the larger Docklands Stadium utilised for matches such as derbies and finals. As well as this, the club has an agreement to play a single match at Kardinia Park in Geelong every season." From what I can find, this was their only match scheduled for Geelong this season according to https://www.melbournevictory.com.au/sites/mvc/files/2018-07/fixture_A4_homeaway.pdf

wasn't this Victory game rescheduled, allowing them more time around their ACL commitments? If so, may be the AAMI Park stadium was already booked, remembering that it's used by rugby and league, both playing at the moment.

Agree with the Phoenix issue. As you say, and Rudan said after the game, it was a crazy decision that treated the Nix fans poorly and also showed a lack of faith in the team by club management. As for Victory in Geelong, on the surface I fail to see the attraction but the Victory brainstrust is clearly seeing something, e.g. club stands to benefit financially, by playing there. I don’t know either !

Stevo - Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid I am not convinced. The question is ,"How do you treat the spectators you have" ??, and to re-position a game that could have been held anywhere in NZ, (in the past Phoenix have played at other centres), to a ground some hundreds of miles away in Sydney is treating your support with utter disdain. I was aware that Victory have participated in playing "home" games elsewhere in Victoria ,but once again,in a competition not overwhelmed with thousands of travelling support, again ,in these difficult financial times, a hard decision to comprehend. Re, the original idea, it was some years ago the then FFA board suggested clubs take at least one home game per season to "the country" and despite much evidence that this was a financial disaster area, I was wondering if the "idea" was still in vogue. Cheers jb.

The relocation on the Phoenix game was criticised by Rudan who said that the club hierarchy had little faith in the team https://www.goal.com/en-au/news/no-confidence-rudan-slams-phoenix-for-moving-game-to-sydney/1s8c9lfd93lpk1olswo749jleg "Put it this way: I didn't think the club thought or had the confidence, that we would have the season that we're having at the start of the season when they made that decision.” Victory playing games in Geelong is not new of course and appears to be a deliberate strategy by the club (as opposed to a directive from FFA). Maybe the stadium rental in Geelong is an inducement? You also need to take account of the hot weather yesterday which would have reduced the crowd by a few thousand people.

Can someone please explain to me the following. In a sporting situation in which clubs are struggling to make end meet, why does a "home" game for a team from New Zealand get played in an outer Sydney ground. It is even harder to understand when it is considered that that same NZ team pulled a crowd of almost 23,500 to their last home game and yet this "move" cut their attendance to 5,500.. Add to that this latest gaffe when the leagues best supported team ,Victory, ,drawing a season's average of around 21,000 to their home games, are sent to the "country" at Geelong where they draw only 8,000. Over those 2 games that is a reduction in the aggregate attendance at HAL games in the last 2 weeks of around 30,000 spectators. Just who thinks up these crazy placements and who picks up the tab for "lost" income. Anyone know? Cheers jb.

How the hell did Honda get 3 points for that game in the Tobin medal? No sense at all.

We've got 200 travelling supporters for tommorow's game. Plus the ones already there, minus the Melbournians. Who's making the noise.

I can tell you that when Bruno comes back to Melbourne with Glory he’s going to get a lot of love from City supporters. Hopefully by then WJ will just be a bad memory.
