The 2022 World Cup quarter-finals continue with the Netherlands facing Argentina at Lusail Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6am (AEDT).

\With the first quarter-final between Brazil and Croatia to be decided in the preceding hours, the Netherlands are out to advance beyond the quarter-final stage for the first time since 2014, and continue their search for the nation’s first-ever World Cup trophy.

After a comfortable group stage where the team conceded just once and won two matches, a round of 16 clash with the USA proved nothing but a canter and the Dutch look a real threat heading into the final week of the tournament.

Argentina advanced beyond the group stage despite an early loss to Saudi Arabia, with wins against Poland and Mexico seeing them through and setting up a clash with the plucky Australians in the first of the knockout phases. After leading by two, Argentina received a heck of a fright from the Socceroos, before holding on 2-1 in what was a thrilling encounter.

Both teams now head to Lusail for an immense clash that will decide the second team through to the semi-finals, with the Brazilians likely to be the first to do so against Croatia just a few hours earlier.

The teams look to be evenly matched and the bookies appear to also hold that belief, with the Argentinians marginally holding sway in the betting and the chances of some extra time being required very, very real.

Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong will hold much of the Dutch hopes, whilst the dazzling skills of Lionel Messi, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez will be crucial should the South Americans hope to continue their run.

The Netherlands will play with a quiet efficiency and have the tendency to scythe through the Argentina defence with crisp and pro-active passing, whereas the men in blue and white will sit on the ball far more patiently, awaiting the moment to pounce and the genius that is Messi to make his statement on the match.

Prediction

Whilst the bookies look to be leaning towards the Argentinians, I am seeing a Dutch win based on a more proficient effort across the full 90 minutes. The Socceroos exposed some cracks in the South Americans’ armour and the Dutch might just be the team to expose them fully.

The Dutch should go back to being marvellous to watch - pragmatic hasn't worked for them

I really dislike the penalty shoot out as a solution. 95+% of teams are coached to be really negative and defensive in extra time and play for the penalties. It seems a loss that is more acceptable to coaches and the stress it puts some players under is absurd. A better system would be a version of 6-a-side for 10 minutes each half. More entertaining and less potential individual mental anguish.

It’s nail biting when the stakes are so high! On balance I think we got the right winner.

Yep, when they attacked in the last 25 mins of normal time they looked really good. Then, at 2-2, they simply stopped. Just as Argentina had done earlier.

Dutch got what they deserved. Had all the momentum with last minute goal and just sat back and played for pens in extra time. Disappointing Dutch team. Very dull - unless when required.
