A traditional F3 Derby will kick off the Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners’ seasons in the Hunter, with bragging rights up for grabs in the opening round of the new A-League Men season. Join The Roar for live scores from 4:05pm (AEDT).

After a miserable 2020-21 where only the pathetic play of Melbourne Victory saved them from the wooden spoon, Newcastle have had their prospects brightened by some exciting new signings and decent pre-season form.

A total of 15 players departed the Jets during the off-season and another 12 have now signed on the make the difference the fans long to see. Georgian Beka Mikeltadze and Cameroon International Olivier Boumal look dynamic A-League additions and all the talk around Newcastle has been the discipline and commitment demanded by new manager Arthur Papas.

Blending his squad will be key, as will be the case for Nick Montgomery on the Central Coast.

After losing much quality and off the back of a brilliant season under Alen Stajcic, the new manager will be hoping Frenchman Beni Nkololo and Japanese Cy Goddard can fill the gaps created by the departures and that the Mariners can continue to re-invigorate football on the Central Coast of New South Wales with another competitive season.

A third place finish in 2020-21 will be tough to emulate, yet if the Mariners even dream of doing so, a win against their derby rival is a must on the opening day of the season.

Very pleasing win for the Mariners. Shame on those who keep writing Central Coast off.

Is it a double header at Newcastle? Fixtures via google suggest that.

Great to see that the broadcast issues impacting the Melbourne v. Tarneet game in Geelong last night and the Petro FC v. Roar game at AAMI Park are not impacting the Sunday games. While functional improvements to the Paramount + platform are still required (pause, rewind, catch-up etc…), people need to keep in mind that unlike in the Fox years, the APL are responsible for the production of football now, so Paramount + are taking their signal for all but the agreed FTA games from the APL’s production contractor. This is a change full of huge opportunity for the leagues and a future Div 2 as I have spoken about elsewhere, but there are going to be some issues as this new approach matures. I watch football on mobile devices, Chromecast to TV and via both Android inbuilt / Google TV products and all four streeming approaches are just working excellent today – so I think the APL are working their way through the production issues nicely. The APL obviously need to get quicker at getting their other produced content (e.g. highlights, stats, press conferences, replays and mini matches etc) onto the 10Play portal and its own [KEEP.UP] portal also – but I am confident they will. The studio content, talent and surrounding post-production overlays etc from 10 are very fresh and improving with each game also. Great to see the game being routinely covered out of Melbourne for the first time in the A-League era also. I had a moment after knocking back a curry and a beer and heading on foot towards to Kardinia Park last night when I just smiled to myself and thought ‘how good is football’?

Pretty ordinary first half. Unfortunately for jets they have gone behind. Seems to me that the jets are passing around without any intent. Maybe a more aggressive approach now they are down 0-1

Aside from a couple glitches this weekend on Paramount (which was probably to be expected) the difference in broadcast from Foxtel hasn’t been overly noticeable
