The A-League season returns with a Friday night blockbuster, as ladder leaders Sydney FC host Wellington Phoenix at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:30pm (AEST).
It’s been 126 days since any play was conducted in the 2019-2020 A-League season, and even longer than that for these two teams. Neither side has played since mid-March. In their final games before the disruption, Sydney drew 1-all with arch rivals the Wanderers and the Phoenix thrashed the Melbourne Victory 3-nil.
In terms of the ladder, it’s Sydney FC who look firmly on their way to capturing the silverware for the second year running. Steve Corica’s men have lost only twice since the beginning of the season last October, and were looking in some scintillating form before the coronavirus disruption.
The New Zealanders are also having their best season in a while, sitting third on the ladder with 11 wins, three draws and six losses. A win today will see Ufuk Talay’s men surpass their total number of wins from last season, and keep them competitive in challenging Sydney for an unlikely premiership bid.
The Sky Blues have duelled twice with Wellington thus far this season, winning one and playing to an entertaining 2-all draw just before Christmas. Sydney are heavy favourites for this clash, although it’s the Phoenix who have a four-game winning streak. The visitors securing victory would see them equal their previous longest winning streak in their history, set in 2010.
Both sides are heading into the game largely healthy, with the Phoenix buoyed by the return of international imports Gary Hooper and Ulises Davila.
