Crusaders and Highlanders game cancelled - points share sham

By ptovey01 / Roar Pro

I’m sorry but I disagree with the way that the SANZAR have dealt with the Crusaders Hurricanes game. They have decided that the game be cancelled and the points be shared by both teams.

I feel sympathy for the players, their families and everyone else in Christchurch (I also have friends and family living there), but what happens now that the points have been shared.

In my opinion there should have been 2 options:

1. Reschedule the game or
2. The team who has decided not to play forfeits.

This is a tournament after all.

From a rugby perspective (taking out all human emotion of the recent quakes), it sits very well with both teams to have a weekend off. Crusaders regroup after looking like the whipping boys last Saturday, and Nonu’s 1 week suspension is over.

What happened to the old “they showed their strength through adversity” and “the human factor beat the quake” headlines that they so love after a sporting event that followed a quake or flood?

Additionally, what happens if the Hurricanes miss out on the finals by 2 points or the Crusaders make the finals by 2 points. Will the Hurricanes or a team which misses out ask for a review of the decision?

I hope that it doesn’t come to that, but can see a dark cloud hovering over this decision in about 14 weeks time.

What do other Roarers think?

This post is in very bad taste and you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. How is it that the Roar allowed this?

" i gave money to red cross this morning" IMO, that's about the only humanitarian thing about your attitude. Would it still be the same if you were personally affected by the earthquake, floods or hurricane. Not having any compassion for the devastation is, in my eyes, pretty heartless

Mate, It's a pity that you can't read plain English! I did not say that the game should not be called off. Of course, it should have been, it was absolutely the right decision. I am not callous or heartless - I have friends and workmates with people in Christchurch and I am hearing real stories about it daily. My point was simply that in five or six weeks time they may be sorry that they have committed themselves to sharing the points, if it is possible that there was another solution, and neither you or me are qualified to pass judgment on that. This is a sports website after all. If you had read the post that started this whole discussion you would see that the author was saying the same - he was attacking SANZAR not The Crusaders, for their handling of the points sharing decision. I said (and I suggest you read it again, this time CAREFULLY).. that a decision on the sharing of points or re-playing the game could have waited, and if no solution found, then, fair enough, share the points, but what if they turn around later and say it could have been replayed, then one team is hard done by...that's all ...if no solution could be found, then no harm done. It's going to be pretty unfair now if they changed their mind Obviously, I accept that there may not be a better solution. They only called one game off not their whole season, so clearly the Crusaders are ready to get on with it. Don't tell me I have no idea what people are going through - You don't have that right, sport!

Some of the comments in hear are outright appalling and show some people are SICK to the core. You have no idea what Christchurch has been through and for the sake of your entertainment people like Terry abd Gatesy want the ctrusadersw to walk away from their shattered homes, shattered lives of their neighbours, ignore the dead still lying trapped in buildings all over the city. Not worry that much of the city don't even have a working TV let alone power. All to play a game of rugby. Get a heart and get some perspective on reality. It's only a flippin game of rugby deal with it. gatesy your last comment that the players want to play is so fasr from the truth is laughable, the Crusaders did not want to play nor did their countrymen (Hurricanes). It was a no brainer

It's awesome that common sense has prevailed, crusaders have nothing to prove (7 titles speaks for itself), come on guys it's just a game of rugby, put yourself in these guys shoes, would your mind really be fully focused on the game knowing whats going on back home?! i'm a canes fan through & through....but don't be suprised to see a different crusaders beast when they do come back!!

I really can not believe terry and others, what is wrong with you, are you deranged. These crusader players live in ch ch, there homes are destroyed and damaged, their failies are sh*t scared. People have died. This is just a sport. Yes we all love it, but get a grip, I hope nothing ever happens to you and yours, but god blimey if it ever did, I hope you dont just jump in the car and p--s off to work and leave them to mop up... lifes too short. What do you think these players are, robots... they are people who just happen to be good at a sport, they will be out there in chch with shovels and buckets cleaning up the mess on their streets, just like everyone else.

I'm from ChCh and my initial thoughts were, earthquake tragedy a-side, that the forfeiting team should get zero points. However, as this is an agreement between both teams, rather than a forfeit, then sharing the points seems OK. It's done now. So let's move on. The super points item that seems worse to me is giving teams 4 points for a bye - then not indicating on the tables that a team has had there bye. Currently the Stormers have played 0, won 0, lost 0, 4 points. What the? Why not give zero points and avoid the mental recalculation of the tables trying to see who has and hasn't had the bye yet?

I like how you assume that the ground and stadium are even inhabitable and not about to crumble, and the fact that there might is no running water in the stadiums toilets and taps for the crowd to use. I like the comment about "plenty of hands down there already" - yeah, Terry, looks like they have got it coverednothing that a quick trip to Bunnings and a good vacuum won't fix. Come on Terry have some perspective.

In addition to what allblackfan mentioned above, a majority of ChCh does not water, a functioning sewerage system and electricity. There are still aftershocks occurring. I wonder if people would want to be in a stadium in current circumstances. I think it is too soon for ChCh to host a rugby match as the authorities have other important things to attend to first. I know that sport lifts people's spirits, as terry rightfully says, but there is still a significant number of people missing and a lot of grieving relatives and friends. I think it is appropriate to give them some time for the mourning process.

rugby is a sport with the ability to lift people's spirits..that's what christchurch needs now..there are plenty of hands already down there, so these crusaders should, tighten up that upper lip, get the f--k on that field, pass around the hat in the stands and goddamn, bring some light to that grim city..if they want to do more then donate the gate and their week's paycheck to the victims..in saying that, i gave money to red cross this morning..

Wow - I am stunned that some of you actually think that a game of rugby would help the people of Canterbury at this point and feel dudded that your team might miss the finals as a result of the crusaders and hurricanes sharing the points. In the near future yes getting back to normality is going to help the people, but as allblackfan stated, at present the grounds are ruined, people have not electricity, water, transport, housing, and some are a little preoccupied trying to find loved ones in the rubble of the CBD. Clearly this earthquake has been quite inconvenient for some roarers - get a little perspective please.

The most successful team in Super rugby history is coming to your town the weekend after their worst ever disaster in their town? With half the All Blacks forward pack? Great call by the Hurricanes - I firstly believe its the right call for the humane reasons people have already mentioned, But hell as a Hurricanes fan ill take 2 points in a heartbeat. Do you really think any team could have withstood a Crusaders team this weekend? I feel sorry enough for the Tahs next weekend. Brad Thorne would have laid waste to the rookie Hurricanes pack like a Bowling ball through matchsticks, hes bad enough as it is, but with emotions thrown in? No thank you.

Decision made was only realistic one that could have and in my opinion should have been made at time. Hind sight is great. Time needed to bury the dead and to look after the injured etc etc etc and Rugby is only a game.

...tend to agree with Terry - these are guys who will pitch in and help with the cleanup in their downtime and play for their region in their work time, and give people something to look forward to..and besides, players want to play, generally speaking. The Reds pitched in during the floods and then turned their games into fund-raisers, so that was pretty worthwhile.

Look I wrote this out of a comment on another string. I don't think it should be played this week. I just think it shouldn't have been cancelled as it has. From all news reports in the media the 'saders made the call that there would be no game and no mention of the canes wishes. However based on what I'm reading on this thread there was a joint decision not to play. Fine with that. SANZAR should have looked at other options to reschedule like other sports. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Terry, no heart whatsoever! People have too much to do at the moment - things like, I dunno, find a place to live, treat the injured and scared, help out others, you know, stuff like that. Only when the dust starts to settle should you look at providing them with footy entertainment, to keep morale up. That will happen next week. In any case, u can't play in CChurch. The grounds have liquefied. The nearest available playing ground will be just far enough that people won't go, and with only 60 % of power restored, who's going to watch (providing they still have TV?).
