Ioane to make call after UK rugby tour

By News / Wire

Crowd-pleasing Wallabies and Queensland Reds winger Digby Ioane says he will make a decision on whether he stays in Australia or signs with Japanese rugby after the upcoming two-game UK tour.

The destructive winger is weighing up a lucrative offer from Japanese club Kubota which is reportedly worth $1 million a season.

“It’s up in the air at the moment … it’s not all sorted yet and I’m going to leave it until I play these last two games in the UK and then I’ll put pen to paper when I come back,” Ioane told AAP on Thursday.

Ioane’s decision to play for the Wallabies on the UK tour, which begins with a clash at Twickenham against the Barbarians on November 26, has sparked speculation the winger will knock back the Kubota offer, especially now the Japanese season is up and running.

But for now, Ioane just wants to focus on the clash with the Barbarians and then Wales in Cardiff on December 3.

“I always look forward to playing over there. It should be a good tour and I just want to go there and play some good rugby and make a call on everything else when I get back,” he said.

mmm, I dunno I think McCabe goes alright. He may not be the punchiest player out there and there was alot of love to have his position filled by Barnes in the RWC, but he definately never let his team mates down and is a great defender. He gets given a job to do and does it. If being world class can be catergorised by lifting to the next level from club rugby to test level and against opposing players who also have the ability to lift, I'd say he holds his own.

I reckon a fit Drew Mitchell should also feature here. He hasn't always been that great but the last 2 years he's been a prolific try scorer. Also Rob Horne might push for this category one day, if he stays uninjured long enough.

If Digby was staying here he would have said so I reckon. Forwards win matches anyway and what we really need is a world class forward pack.

If I was him I wouldn't want to miss the Lions Tour as you won't get another shot at them as the next tour will be in 12 to 16 years time after 2013 (I say 16 years if Argentina gets included on the rota).

McCabe isnt up there and Mitchell is a rung below the others. Only Pocock and the hookers in the forwards

Rugby these days is a business. When your making them money they treat you well, as soon as you stop being of value to them, they will show you the door. Loyalty in this day age comes at a high cost. The only people Digby needs to be loyal to are himself and his family. 3 years in Japan could set him up for life. He is an injury prone player, who knows how long his career will last. I think he will go.

In my opinion the wallabies players classified as world class currently. Backs Beale JOC Ioane Mcabe Barnes Genia Drew Mitchell Forwads Pocock Horwill Vickerman Ben Robinson TPN/Steve Moore And Palu when fit And Samo but only as bench player So now the wallaby shave to explore was to develop depth, and give the young players a chance in the squad.

Surely you are kidding Harry Not that I would begrudge Digby getting his true market worth - Hes only got another 5-8 years to get paid and secure his financial future. Australian rugby has absolutely no one on the radar of Digbys quality to take his place, it would be an unmitigated disaster for the Wallabies if he left.

When I started playing it was 5 points for coverted try, then 6 points, THEN 7, this happen nearly every fifteen years. So why don't we go straight to 9 points for a converted try, then we wouldn't have to have a change until 2041. Now I've got that bit of sillyness out of the way the whole problem has been caused by the 3 point penalty. Every increase in points for tries over the years was supposed to correct this, when the simplest answer would've been to go to the league point's system.

When I saw the head line I immediately thought stay for the jersey, then I saw one million dollars. If true take the money dude.

jameswm I'm quite fascinated to see what the system turns up next year. The ARU claim they have been focusing more than ever on buying young talent as teenagers instead of later, and so we'll see if this has been the case. As I calculate, Australia are 2 short of a good backline throughout, and 5 short in the forwards. The new players to fill this in can only be new young guns: will enough be ready for 2013?

This is not related to topic, but check this out......... http://www.rugby365.com/news/2821185.htm I like it. i would never have thought to increase the valeu of a conversion. but after thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Why go for a 2 point penalty, when you got plug the line and potentially get an 8 point converted try. I will be very interested in how this experiment goes.

Let Ioane a go to Japan.Turner and Cummins are quite capable of doing a better job. Queensland have a habit of discovering good wingers and its the rght time now for them to have a good look at whats avaiable in their state.

Ioane leaving would be a disaster. To my mind there are 5 good backs: Genia, Cooper, Beale, Ioane, JOC and Pocock, Robinson and TPN/Moore in the forwards (not sure of Horwill). So that means an extra two good backs are needed from the system, and an extra FIVE forwards!! So one leaving is a disaster.

I thought this was all done and dusted some time ago. First I heard offers of up to 2 million, then I heard he turned them down after the Reds won, and he wanted to be part of that team going forward, then before the RWC I heard he hadn't decided yet. I know people have varied opinions on this, but I just want a good honest bloke to sign up ala Corey Parker. Minimal fuss, thankful of what has been done for them within the game already.

That's right, the loyalty to the jersey, or the dollars? Money talks.
