2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period: Week 2 updates, breaking news

By Josh / Expert

The 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period was set on fire on Wednesday, with six trades completed and a number of big names crossing clubs, including Dayne BeamsRyan Griffen and Tom Boyd.

Well, a massive day of trades in the end with six deals done. Let’s recap.

In our first trade of the day, three clubs got involved as Collingwood gained Travis Varcoe from Geelong while sending Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne, and Mitch Clark moved from Melbourne to Geelong.

My Take: I don’t put much stock in Varcoe or Lumumba, but if Geelong can get Clark back to peak form, he’s an excellent pick up for them. A great fit alongside Tom Hawkins.

The second trade was the biggest of the trade period to date as Collingwood and Brisbane finally agreed to a deal, with the Magpies sending Dayne Beams and pick 67 north to Brisbane in exchange for Jack Crisp and picks 5 and 25.

My Take: Win-win for both clubs. The Lions secure an instant boost to their midfield while Collingwood can hopefully invest in the draft and get some good talent.

That led to our third trade of the day, as Collingwood passed pick 25 on to North Melbourne for Levi Greenwood.

My Take: A good get by the Pies, but also a good effort by North to secure pick 25 rather than accept Collingwood’s original offer of pick 30. North were bound to lose Greenwood but at least held out for the most they could get.

Our fourth trade of the day came as something of a surprise, as Geelong gave up pick 21, which they had only received in exchange for Allen Christensen on Monday, to nab Rhys Stanley from the Saints, as well as pick 60.

My Take: A big win for the Saints who now have another highish draft pick to rebuild with. I’m not a big fan of Stanley but he could go alright at the Cats especially if he gets to play as third tall.

After more than a week of haggling, Carlton and Greater Western Sydney finally came to an agreement which saw Carlton give up pick 7 in the draft to secure Kristian JakschMark Whiley and pick 19.

My Take: A good one for both teams. The Giants sell off some want-away depth to move up in the draft, while Carlton get more bang for their buck with three youngsters instead of one.

And last but certainly not least was the one that shocked us all, as the Western Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney, having both in the last week ruled out trading their players, agreed to a deal that saw Ryan Griffen and Tom Boyd swap clubs, and pick 6 move from the Bulldogs to the Giants.

My Take: Trade of the century. Giants got a good deal for Boyd I think, given he wanted out, and the Dogs get the key forward they have needed for so long. We’ll be debating this one for decades.

So what happens next? There’s just one day of the trade period left and while most of the big names who had requested moves are now sewn up, there’s a lot left to be done before 2pm tomorrow.

A solution to the Paddy Ryder situation is still needed, and it’s rumoured that Greater Western Sydney, who now hold picks 4, 6 and 7 in the draft, will be active again tomorrow. They might go after established players, or they might go after St Kilda’s pick 1.

We’ll find out on Thursday!

Wed, Oct 15, 4:15 PM

The big one has gone down! Bulldogs trade Ryan Griffen and pick 6 to Greater Western Sydney for Tom Boyd.

Wed, Oct 15, 2:30 PM

It’s confirmed – Kristian Jaksch and Mark Whiley join Carlton, along with pick 19, from Greater Western Sydney, with the Giants gaining pick 7 in return.

Wed, Oct 15, 1:15 PM

Another deal is on the way – our fifth of the day. Greater Western Sydney are expected to trade Kristian JakschMark Whiley and pick 19 to Carlton for pick 7.

Wed, Oct 15, 12:16 PM

Here we go again – another trade! Rhys Stanley joins Geelong, the trade is Stanley and pick 60 from St Kilda to Geelong for pick 21.

Wed, Oct 15, 12:12 PM

And the final link in the five-team trade is finished as Levi Greenwood leaves North Melbourne to join Collingwood, and the Kangaroos gain pick 25 in return.

Wed, Oct 15, 12:07 PM

And just like that we have a second trade!

Confirmed that Dayne Beams has joined the Brisbane Lions in exchange for picks 5, 25, and Jack Crisp. The Lions have gained Collingwood’s pick 67 as well.

Wed, Oct 15, 11:59 AM

The first trade of the day is complete and it is a three-team deal between Collingwood, Geelong and Melbourne.

Collingwood have gained Geelong’s Travis Varcoe on a three year deal, and sent Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne. Melbourne have then traded Mitch Clark on to Geelong.

No draft picks were exchanged in the deal.

My Take: Potentially a win for all clubs involved here, but I think Mitch Clark going to Geelong has the most upside. If he gets body and mind right he’s the perfect foil for Tom Hawkins.

Wed, Oct 15, 11:35 AM

Should have a big trade announcement very soon. This one is expected to see Dayne Beams get to Brisbane, with Jack CrispLevi Greenwood and Travis Varcoe going to Collingwood, Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne and Mitch Clark to Geelong. I’ll have full details as soon as they’re available.

Wed, Oct 15, 11:08 AM

Sounds like a Dayne Beams announcement is imminent.

Wed, Oct 15, 11:02 AM

It looks like the luck of Carlton midfielder Mitch Robinson may have run out, with the Blues unwilling to offer him a new contract and no other clubs making any significant inquiries to acquire him ahead of the 2015 season.

Despite his obvious talent, Robinson’s lack of discipline looks likely to cost him a second chance at AFL level. He was suspended multiple times this year, and late in the year lied to coach Mick Malthouse about his involvement in a late-night altercation that left him with a fractured jaw.

It is expected that the Blues will delist Robinson, and his best chance of joining another club will be as a Delisted Free Agency once the Trade period is over.

Wed, Oct 15, 10:00 AM

It was another slow day in the trading world yesterday despite speculation that a massive deal which would see Dayne Beams join Brisbane and at least five other players find new homes was just around the corner.

Instead Tuesday came and went without a single trade, leaving us with still just four trades completed so far in 2014.

However with just two days left of the trade period, we’re almost certain to see things get started today.

The confirmed movements so far are as such:

Jarrad WaiteShaun Higgins signed to North Melbourne.

James Frawley signed to Hawthorn.

Nick Malceski signed to Gold Coast.

James Gwilt signed to Essendon.

Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Hawthorn for picks 19 and 40.

Jeff Garlett and pick 83 traded from Carlton to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79.

Joel Patfull traded from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for pick 21.

Allen Chirstensen traded from Geelong to Brisbane for pick 21.

Bery true on the exposed form. Andrew Mckay has been talking all week about the blues filling some gaps in the 20-24 age range (compromised draft time) and these blokes and the likes of Everitt and Docherty last year do that - hopefully if the likes of Menzel Buckely Bell, Cripps, Casboult and possibly Graham take that next stpe this year the addition of Everitt, Docherty Jaksch and Whiley will for a core group for the club for sometime to come.

What I like about the trade is that Carlton have seen both players play AFL as opposed to an unknown which is why I believe the other 3 players I mentioned have worked out (I mean Tyson got 6 brownlow votes this year against Port and Hombsch and Neade speak for themselves). Also Terry Wallace said on trade radio that Carlton don't have enough youth where this would solve this in one swoop. Another reason is I believe Malthouse has gotten something out of youngsters like Buckley and Menzel (don't know if you agree that it's Mick's doing) so if that is the case then getting another 3 youngsters would be good for you at least from a sheer numbers point of view. But point 1 is what does it for me.

Lets hope the trend does continue - at the very least in increases the odds of success, surely 1 of Jaksch, Whiley and pick 19 works out.

@ Josh Elliot Have you heard any updates on Sam Blease? I think he is a very talented player, who has had bad luck with injuries. I would love hawthorn to pick him up, and use him as a forward crumber, in support of Cyril

Essendon seem intent on stuffing up the trade period. They have the chance to get 2 early picks for Ryder plus get Cooney and Giles for loss of other picks. Wake up Essendon and get the deals done!

Word is GWS could use the pick to package up picks for St Kilda's pick 1 because they want Petracca most as they have plenty of top draft picks and certainly enough KPF's so they just want number 1 and some experience which they've got.

yeah that doesn't make sense sorry, I think there is a few decent outside mids on offer one of which the giants could pick up

Yeah Jaksch has shown something so at least you know your getting something for your pick (like I said below a first rounder is never a guarantee), Whiley is a benefit and pick 19 makes you the winners in my eyes. We picked up Hombsch and Neade off of GWS and Melbourne got Tyson so if you keep the trend you'll be laughing.

It reminds me a bit of that line from that Draft Day movie that came out this year..."Make a splash" - I think given the bind the Dogs found themselves in, they had to do something to get themselves back in the frame, and show that the club hadn't just given up. I hope it works out for them, I really do. The Dogs are the longest suffering fans of any club, and it would be nice to see them atop the podium in the next decade or so.

Sorry mate, I lost track of the thread, I thought it was my above response to TomC - complete brain fade. I agree with your comment. How do you view the Jaksch trade?

No Macca I was replying to your comment, I meant experience for GWS (Griffen and Patful) in the short term which is what they need, they clear out anyone who doesn't want to be up there and they get great picks from Dogs and Carlton. A triple win for GWS where as Dogs need Boyd to perform to the Hype or stuck with a 7 year contract.

Radelaide - They may not get the experience in this year but the list they are assembling may make it easier to grab someone next year. Also the kids like Wallis & Libertore have a few years under their belts now. Lindsay - Why would GWS want another KPF?

and they arent done yet, rumored to be going for the saints pick 1, which would give them most likely another KPF.

agree, they have plenty of forwards and youth but they pick up some experience to support the kids. More a win for GWS but if Boyd performs then it's a win for the Dogs to.

I think they would still have plenty of room TomC - who would be taking it? I reckon it is a great move gets them a quality young midfield and a quality key forward all of whom are similar in age profile and will become the core around which a team can be assembled - just unfortunate they didn't have the nerve to keep the coach.

The Griffen/Boyd deal was always going to happen, as his manager said, it's insane to have two players who want to swap clubs stuck for a season. Will be interested to see how each of them go at their new homes.

Amazing stuff. If Boyd is truly on the kind of money that's been rumoured then this is an enormous gamble by the Bulldogs. But then I guess the salary cap has to be spent. They've probably been paying less than 100% for a couple of years, at least.

Boyd is a dog and Griffen a giant, interesting that the giants took a step back from what they originally said
