The 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period reached a climax yesterday with a string of big name trades being finalised. Today is the last opportunity for clubs to make their moves, up until the deadline of 2:00pm (AEDT).

LATEST

Thanks to all those who joined me for my coverage of the 2014 Trade and Free Agency period – it was a big one!

I’ll be writing up a full report card and giving out grades to all eighteen teams tomorrow here on The Roar.

Thurs, Oct 16 3:19 PM

So to recap, here’s all of the Deadline Day trades and my take on them.

The first move of the day was Greater Western Sydney seeing off ruckman Jon Giles who along with pick 62 went to Essendon for pick 53.

My Take: A good get for Essendon who have limited ruck depth. Giants didn’t gain much but that’s no surprise.

The second move of the day saw the Paddy Ryder deal finally sorted out. Ryder joined Port Adelaide in a three way trade that saw Port give up picks 17 and 37 to Essendon, and then 37 go on to the Western Bulldogs for Adam Cooney.

My Take: All three clubs got what they wanted in the end – Port have their second ruck, Essendon got a first round pick and a useful player, and the Bulldogs got another pick, plus some more salary cap space. Be interesting to see how this one turns out but at this stage I think the Power win it.

Mitch Hallahan joined the Gold Coast as the Suns sent picks 47 and 49 to the Hawks in exchange.

My Take: Big win for the Suns, Hallahan has looked promising for some time now, and they nabbed him for virtually nothing. Hawks may come to regret this one.

Melbourne gave up pick 23 to secure Sam Frost from Greater Western Sydney, but got picks 40 and 53 back as well.

My Take: Good get for the Demons though I’m surprised they gave up a second round pick rather than just holding out and getting him in the Pre-Season Draft.

Sydney’s Shane Biggs moved to the Western Bulldogs for the smallest of pick upgrades, as the Bulldogs gave up pick 37 and got back Sydney’s pick 39 in turn.

My Take: Not much value for Sydney who had the choice of taking this or losing him for nothing. Could be a good get for the Dogs.

Carlton finally secured Liam Jones from the Bulldogs, trading pick 46.

My Take: Eh. Whatever Carlton sees in Jones, I don’t see it.

Our second last trade came just seconds before the deadline, as Adelaide made their first move of the trade period, gaining Luke Lowden and Kyle Cheney from Hawthorn, trading picks 31, 50 and 68 to receive Lowden and Cheney along with 43, 47 and 59.

My Take: Likely to be fairly inconsequential this one.

We all thought that was it until the Crows and the Cats lodged a last minute trade right before the buzzer – Geelong gained picks 10 and 47 from Adelaide, giving up 14 and 35 in return.

My Take: An odd kind of trade. Interested to see how this one plays out on draft night.

Thurs, Oct 16, 2:05 PM

Scratch that – we’ve got a last minute trade, a pure picks swap. Geelong trade picks 14 and 35 to Adelaide for 10 and 47.

And now we’re done.

Thurs, Oct 16, 2:00 PM

It’s done! The 2014 Trade and Free Agency period is officially over.

Thurs, Oct 16, 1:59 PM

Last trade of the year done. Hawthorn send Luke Lowden and Kyle Cheney along with picks 43, 47 and 59 to Adelaide for picks 31, 50 and 68.

Thurs, Oct 16, 1:51 PM

Another late deal gets done – Liam Jones goes from Western Bulldogs to Carlton for pick 46.

Thurs, Oct 16, 1:48 PM

Late deal done. Sydney trades Shane Biggs and pick 39 to Western Bulldogs for pick 37.

Thurs, Oct 16, 1:45 PM

Another deal done – Greater Western Sydney trade Sam Frost and picks 40 and 53 to Melbourne for pick 23.

Thurs, Oct 16, 1:09 PM

Tick tock, tick tock. Less than an hour to go as we wait for the final trades.

Thurs, Oct 16, 11:57 AM

A third deal of the day done – Hawthorn trades Mitch Hallahan to the Gold Coast for picks 47 & 49.

Thurs, Oct 16, 11:48 AM

Confirmed that the second deal of the day is done, a three way trade that sees Paddy Ryder finally join Port Adelaide, Port pass pick 17 on to Essendon and pick 37 to the Western Bulldogs, who then give Adam Cooney to Essendon.

All up – Port get Ryder, lose picks 17 and 37, Bulldogs lose Cooney, gain pick 37, Bombers lose Ryder, gain 17 and Cooney.

Thurs, Oct 16, 11:36 AM

First deal of the day is done, as Jon Giles joins Essendon. The Giants trade Giles and their fourth round pick, no 62, to Essendon for its third round pick, no 53.

We’re reportedly close to a deal for Paddy Ryder, with a three way deal to see Essendon gain Adam Cooney and pick 17, the Western Bulldogs gain pick 37, and Ryder join Port Adelaide.

Thurs, Oct 16, 10:00 AM

Yesterday the talk was all about Tom Boyd being traded from the Greater Western Sydney Giants after playing just nine games in his single season with the club.

The former No. 1 draft pick will now make a name for himself at the Western Bulldogs, after the clubs reached an agreement of Ryan Griffen and pick No. 6 in exchange for the future power forward.

The Giants now possess picks 4, 6 and 7 in next months draft.

Yesterday also saw Collingwood and Brisbane finally agreed to a deal, with the Magpies sending Dayne Beams and pick 67 north to Brisbane in exchange for Jack Crisp and picks 5 and 25.

In a busy day for the Magpies they also gained Geelong’s Travis Varcoe on a three year deal, and sent Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne.

Melbourne in turn traded Mitch Clark on to Geelong in a deal that involved no additional draft picks.

The clock is on for teams to finalise their movements before the 2:00pm deadline this afternoon.

The confirmed movements so far are as such:

Jarrad WaiteShaun Higgins signed to North Melbourne.

James Frawley signed to Hawthorn.

Nick Malceski signed to Gold Coast.

James Gwilt signed to Essendon.

Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Hawthorn for picks 19 and 40.

Jeff Garlett and pick 83 traded from Carlton to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79.

Joel Patfull traded from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for pick 21.

Allen Chirstensen traded from Geelong to Brisbane for pick 21.

Travis Varcoe traded from Geelong to Collingwood, Heritier Lumumba traded from Collingwood to Melbourne, Mitch Clark traded from Melbourne to Geelong.

Dayne Beams and pick 67 traded from Collingwood to Brisbane for Jack Crisp and picks 5 and 25.

Levi Greenwood traded from North Melbourne to Collingwood for pick 25.

Rhys Stanley and pick 60 traded from St Kilda to Geelong for pick 21.

Kristian JakschMark Whiley and pick 19 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Carlton for pick 7.

Ryan Griffen and pick 6 traded from the Western Bulldogs to Greater Western Sydney for Tom Boyd.

And who you're dealing with. Essendon are notorious for being grasping and difficult at trade time. If Port offer the two picks as an opening bid, there's every chance they're forced to raise higher, as you say, and maybe they lose a player as well. Start with a lower bid and lower the Bombers expectations. Dealing with another club, who's more amenable ie. Geelong and you might see a different approach. There's a lot of different people all talking to each other, personalities and attitudes are bound to come into it as well.

Part of the bargaining process I suppose. You offer up your first two picks and immediately the other club starts thinking about what they can get on top of that. If you hold out and offer you first two picks near the end then the other side accepts that that's your best offer. As Paul says, it depends how close your deadline is.

Maybe they thought they would though? Because it's a two week window and the Ryder trade was floated early, Port left pick 17 hanging out there for 10 days or so before they finally reached back into the kitty and pulled out pick 37, which obviously they were prepared to pay all along. That's the thing - shortening the trade period means clubs stuff around less with brinksmanship in the trade window, and the maximum price clubs are prepared to pay or accept is reached a lot sooner, deals get worked out.

Someone wrote that Giles was 6th & 7th in GWS' B&F before Mumford came along so if Ryder came 7th for Essendon in his best year ever then Essendon won by also getting pick 17, but just quietly Port did well too.

Totally agree.also cant help but wonder why port didnt put both picks up last week. They were never going to get him for just pick17

Haha, it's probably as good a theory as any. Couple of senior generals to lead an army of kids. Can't imagine otherwise why they'd want Cooney, they're not challenging for a flag, and that's pretty much the only time you'd want to top up with senior players.

Also remember Bulldogs will be paying for a chunk of Cooney's wage (as well as Griffen's).

They'll need all that experience to lead the rest of under 22s - the players that will be backing up the seniors that weren't involved in the drugs saga.

I can't believe you gave him away though - the blues got more for Garlett!

Giles has been a great servant for GWS Giants; but he'd fallen out of the senior team and had little prospect of getting back in. Sorry to see him go, but footy's a brutal business. The Giants can't give him senior footy, but Essendon can. The Giants got unders for him, but they'll cop that.

I know Cooney's seen better days but pick 37 is a bit cheap isn't it?

Essendon Clever? - They spend all trade period haggling to get a better deal for Ryder and then throw away the hard won pick 37 on Cooney, a 29 year old with bad knees, to compliment 33 year old Chapman, 30 year old Watson (by next season) 29 year old Goddard (who turns 30 in May) and 30 year old Winderlich - not to mention the 39 year old Fletcher. With next year likely to be impacted by sanctions you have to ask what are they thinking?

Does anyone else feel the trade period should be only a week? You feel the Ryder nonsense was only ever going to get resolved once the deadline loomed, and both clubs spent two weeks essentially eyeballing each other, waiting for the other to blink. Bring the deadline forward, and eliminate the pointless posturing. I don't think it enhances our game, and gives ammunition to the critics.

Hehe. See Essendon are clever. Bit by bit they add players not on drugs charges and slowly get rid of them. Only way they may be able to survive in months to come.
