Super Rugby player ratings: Round 15

By PeterK / Roar Guru

Here are my player ratings from Round 15 of Super Rugby. Submit your own, keeping the figures for mediocre scores aside for reasons of brevity and so that the focus is on the best and worst performers.

Scores should be between anyone over 7 and anyone below 4, i.e. for very good and poor performances. Half scores are allowed i.e. 7.5, 3.5 and so on.

Please submit your own scores for a whole team. The minimum is one team, there is no obligation to score all the games. I average the scores per team by the number submitted. I will compile every ones submitted teams scores and produce Wallaby form teams later in the week. There will be one team of the round and three accumulative teams.

Reds – Sharks
The Sharks dominated the Reds at the breakdown and won the collisions. The set pieces were fairly equal in my reading of the game. The Reds’ backs were superior and kept them in the game.

In an interesting tussle, the Sharks were smarter while the Reds were stronger in the scrums.

J. Slipper 7.5/10
J. Hanson 9/10
L. Gill 7.5/10
W. Genia 7.5/10
C. Kuridrani 8/10
S. Kerevi 8.5/10
C. Feauai-Sautia 7.5/10
J. O’Connor 3.5/10

Waratahs – Crusaders
The Waratahs outmuscled and dominated the Crusaders. The final scoreline flattered the Crusaders. The Waratahs had a dominant scrum and surprisingly matched them in the lineout. The backs chimed in well with the forwards.

B. Robinson 8/10
S. Kepu 8.5/10
W. Skelton 8/10
D. Denis 7.5/10
W. Palu 7.5/10
N. Phipps 7.5/10
B. Foley 8/10
R. Horne 9/10
I. Folau 8/10

Force – Highlanders

This was a low quality game. It was error strewn and played with little rugby intelligence. The Force kicked away far too much good possession. The Highlanders never really got out of second gear and just did enough to win.

D. Haylett-Petty 7.5/10

Stormers – Rebels
The Stormers dominated the Rebels at the breakdown and set pieces and won the collisions. The Stormers rush defence was very good. The Rebels kicked behind the rushing defence which worked. The smaller Rebels forwards like McMahon and Jones were found out in contact and it would be worse in Tests.

P. Alo-Emile 3/10
C. Ah-Nau 3/10
P. Leafa 3/10
D. Shipperley 8/10

Cynical Play

Done. Holmes and Kerevi in. If Foley got injured and QC scrubs up well in the next few games, I feel you would do a straight swap Cooper for Foley and leave the squad unchanged. They are both straight No 10's... (imagine Quade's passes having targets of Kerevi, Folau, or Kuridrani on the burst...mouth-watering, eye-watering even...). Both should goal-kick. I envisage this squad, with sufficient time for drilling and getting to know the greater patterns of each others play, has the potential to really complement the games of the individual players, and should be competitive. The players really need time together to "fuse", become a sum greater than the parts, play instinctively with one another and adjust their games for one another, if you get my drift. Let's see what the selectors do. I suspect there will be a few bolters for the 1st RC game, and a few core players will be rested if they play the SR finals.

Bit harsh on Skelton, the tip tackle wasn't his fault. He did shoulder charge McCaw in the back at one point though and was lucky not to get a yellow for that. When is TPN due back? Tahs seem to have a hooking crisis..

Reds were hammered at the breakdown, as Peter K says. Not enough numbers there. Bismarck had a field day. Kerevi's defence still needs some work as well, but given the line breaking capabilities (one of those players who can seemingly bust tackles at will, not to mention that he runs great lines) he should definitely be considered for the WBs. We need at least one big guy in the centres. Aside from Kurdidrani, who else is there? Kerevi is the man.

Remember he didn't just muck up the one kick, another was charged down earlier when he had plenty of time. As you say TWAS, willing in attack but not very effective. A couple of decent conversions however. I had him below a 5 for sure.

Reds 7.5 - Slipper, Gill 8.5 - Kerevi 9 - Hanson Both McIntyre and JOC were close to 3.5, but not quite. Waratahs 7.5 - Dennis, Robinson, AAC, Hoiles 8 - Kepu, Phipps, Foley, Folau, Horne 8.5 - Skelton There were a few other decent performers in both games for mine, not quite listed here. Two quality games.

KK - I do have to query the basis of Slipper and Holmes scoring well. The scrums were fairly equal. Whilst the Tahs scrum smashed the crusaders one which has been strong all year yet neither Tah prop gets a score. If it is for general play then Slipper is fine but Holmes did not do much, for Tahs Kepu did a lot whilst Robinson did little. Also Foley did have a very good game, kicked his goals , scored the try etc yet no score.

Doesn't make sense giving the Reds such high scores. They were average at best, but poor is a better description. The Waratahs played very well to beat one of the better sides in the comp and you score them lower than the Reds???

Change Cowan for Holmes. Dennis is lucky to be in the squad let alone in the match day 23, Simmons, Skelton and Carter. No QC, no Speight. Genia has the points over Phipps so far this season. Kerevi has a chance at inside centre as both Foley and QC can kick goals so no need for CLL.

The Reds game was pretty frustrating. Every time they were hard on attack they found a way to turn over the ball. Kerevi was really good though, seems to be the only player that can break the line on a regular basis....if his fitness is up to it he should be considered for the Wallabies.

I gave him 5. Willing in attack but not very effective.

I was about to post almost the same thing as traun above. Though I'd consider his performance (excluding the kick) would be 7. So probably take and point or two off for gifting the game away

I think the 3.5 is a bit harsh on James O'Conner. If it wasn't for that terrible kick, there would be minimal discussion about his performance. I'd give him a 4.5. 5 on the surface, loses half a point for gifting a try.

I think the Leafa score might actually be a bit generous. I think last week his throwing in the lineout had improved but it was back to it's normal low standard against the Stormers. While he is always reasonable around the ground, that's a fundamental flaw for a hooker and it's really holding him back. Add to that the awful pass to a Stormer trying to run the ball out from the Rebels tryline and it's a toss-up between him and JOC as to who had the worse weekend.
