Angry director Paul Garrard insists Parramatta are already under the salary cap for 2016 and wants the Eels’ premiership points back.
“I went to a board meeting last week and we were under the cap,” Garrard told the Nine Network on Thursday.
“If it’s shown that we’re not over the cap, well then do you get the points back, or was that just another NRL furphy, telling the players (that)?”
Garrard, who is not one of the five Eels officials facing deregistration from the NRL, also slammed the governing body’s finding of systemic rorting at the club.
“What is the system? I haven’t seen any system there,” Garrard told the Parramatta Sun.
“The way they’ve handled it is a kick in the guts to the fans, the players and the sponsors.”
Garrard, the Lord Mayor of Parramatta, accused previous administrators of creating the salary cap mess, arguing the current directors were “very conscious of the salary cap”.
“Ironically it was people who disgraced the club in their time here who have given evidence (to the NRL).
“The people involved in this nonsense are clearly not with the club anymore, and they’ve got a lot to answer for.”
Garrard, who joined the remainder of chairman Peter Sharp’s board last year, also said the injunction successfully sought by Sharp and four fellow officials against the NRL was vital to the organisation of the club.
“The board was left exposed. We have 100 employees needing direction every day,” Garrard said.
“This will give us time to get appropriate personnel in to run the club, get a team on the field, and analyse the documents provided to us.”

And now the NRL have backed down on the assurance that points would not be granted if the Infamous Five proceed with court action. Seems their solicitors have told them its not on. Of course if the League had been competent they would have checked this issue legally beforehand. Then again maybe they did and this is part of the soft penalty. Real impressed with Greenberg. May as well give them their 12 point back and just give them a stern warning.

Similar to what I have heard. They were given advice, followed it, and it has turned out to be wrong. The ex-CEO, who is also the leak and whistleblower, gets off scott free

According to former salary cap auditor Ian Schubert Eels are pretty much cap compliant this year. Interesting from the Australian today: "The Australian understands the NRL rolled all the club’s third parties for the past three years — $760,000 in total — into this year’s payments because they believed they were guaranteed, pushing the club over the cap." Kind of changes the whole way you can view the matter.

Well since the Parramatta board say they are under the cap it must be true... It's not like they've got any vested interest in this...

Perhaps NRL should look to de-register 6 instead of 5

I agree, these penalties should be the benchmark going forward. The Parra board are trying it on.

I never thought I would say this about the NRL but I think they've handled Parra pretty well. It's Parra's board that just can't seem to fathom they're own stupidity. I hope those board members listen to the fans and just step down, they're not wanted anymore.

Garrard must live in another universe. He obviously doesnt get it. Saying you're sorry now and fixing the problem doesnt excuse what has come before. Is he that naive? Take your medicine Paul and be happy you got out this lightly. Most other RL supporters are looking for some reason to force the League to act without the kid gloves they've been using.
