Kasiano cited for Parker kick

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Canterbury’s Sam Kasiano faces being suspended until the finals after being charged for kicking Brisbane’s Corey Parker in the face in Thursday’s spiteful NRL clash.

The giant Bulldogs prop was handed a grade two dangerous contact charge by the match review committee on Friday, throwing a big spanner in the works for his team’s charge toward a top-four finish.

He can cop a two-match ban with an early guilty plea, missing the last two regular season rounds, and risks also missing the first week of finals if he fights the charge.

Broncos captain Parker was left with a cut chin and lip after the incident in the 76th minute of his team’s 20-10 win at Suncorp Stadium.

Parker and several of his teammates were livid in the immediate aftermath of the incident, believing Kasiano had deliberately kicked backwards at the veteran backrower when he was lying on the ground after attempting to tackle the giant Bulldog.

It provided a fiery end to the match but Kasiano was not penalised by the referees.

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett said Parker required several stitches to his face.

“It’s a bit hard to get your head around the accidental part when the tackle’s been made and it’s all been kind of cleared and he’s heading in another direction,” Bennett said.

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler was more circumspect.

“It went to the bunker, they made a ruling on it, play the ball,” Hasler said.

Parker, who received an apology from Kasiano during the post-match handshakes, was able to laugh off teammate Sam Thaiday’s claim his movie career was over.

The 34-year-old was clearly angered by the kick, but refused to comment on whether he felt it was deliberate or not.

“He said to me after the game he was sorry but I’ll leave it up to you guys to make your own opinion on what you feel about that,” Parker said.

“I’m not going to come out and make some sort of statement … you guys can make your own opinion on how it all unfolded.”

They do. They might be a moulded boot now but they still have a stud moulded in

I'm sure THEY know what they're talking about. Unfortunately they can't articulate it that well for the rest of us.

Agree with you, Parker tried to hold onto Kasianos leg to stop him from getting up to chase the player who picked up the ball, he didn't let go of Kasianos leg as the rule states therefore he was trying to cheat, if he lets go of the leg & doesn't try to stop him from getting up then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

If the tackler released and rolled away after completing the tackle like the rules say then no player will ever get kicked from this situation.

It is no relevance where his boot hit Parker. Prove he did it deliberately or dont charge him. He did what all tackled players do. They kick out to release themselves from the tackler Perhaps if Parker had a smaller head it wouldnt have collected it but if Parker rolls away instead of hanging on then there is no sore head. This shows that league is all about an injury and nothing to do with the rules any more. Got injured? It must be someones fault. Dont want to get accidently injured? Puss off and play a non contact sport and then look for someone to blame when you pull a hammy. Wont last long as a pro sports person like that and Parker has been a pro for a long time so should have realised it for what it was.

I have watched the game for years, & there used to be a rule that regarding the use of the foot in trying to kick out. It used to be policed very strictly after a player was caught in the face by a sprig under the eye, thankfully the player never lost the eye. There very much needs to be an awakening to the potential damage that kicking out of the legs & boots can do, some players & clubs are worse than others in this regard, one broncs player as soon as he's tackles is lying face down kicking his lower body & legs up & down like a disabled duck trying to take off, its almost at the instant of him being on the ground. that may not be dangerous but too many other players at all clubs are kicking out with their feet & legs in the tackles these days & unless its stopped we will see more injuries before long. The Kasiano kick is a strange one, as he's one his knees, hands on ground & pushes back with his whole leg, could not understand the reason for it. Several other players in the game, in the actual ruck area from both teams covered there heads with arms & hands rather than trying to get out of the area, problem is the speed of the play the ball at times makes it all but impossible for the full compliment of tacklers to get away from the area. It tells me that they are protecting themselve as a result of this unnecessary kicking of the legs & feet in tackles.

You don't see the best players doing it. That's George Rose, not Matt Scott caliber. It's about focus.

I'm not condoning what Kasiano did but Parker is pretty smart with his old tricky and low professional fouls (that go unnoticed by the refs or are ignored by the refs) and in this case he most certainly didn't release Kasiano's legs after the tackle and that is why Kasiano tried to escape in that manner and unfortunately Parker got the worst of it. It's as Simple as that and there is nothing more to this.

Does this mean that Parker will now be cited by the match review committee for his swinging arm on Eastwood earlier in the game. The intent was obvious.
