Any chance that an independent outlet like The Roar can use the traditional names for our football venues, and 100% eschew the (often transient and rubbishy) corporate branding?

I'm disappointed from a solitary personal point of view... myself and my Sydney supporter mates love getting down to Melbourne to watch the Swans and Lions in separate games in Melbourne. Only 1 round the option this year. Hope we all don't have anything on that weekend.

"It’s not even a geographically large city." This website would indicate otherwise http://www.citymayors.com/statistics/largest-cities-area-125.html Perhaps Cat hasn't been to Melbourne and doesn't even realise it's bigger than Geelong. Cat still hasn't named a Melbourne club that left their suburban ground by choice.

St Kilda was a city, until 1994 in fact. But with metropolitan crawl it was considered part of Melbourne long before that. On my last drive through Victoria I noticed Geelong is basically an outer suburb of Melbourne now. Same old, same old. The Cats can count their blessings they're allowed so many home games in their own little boutique stadium.

........that was true once TomC but hasn't been the case for along time. Climate is changing dramatically everywhere and Canberra is no exception in this regard.

'Richmond will be premiers in 2017' can I hold you to that? First goal is to avoid the wooden spoon, then avoid bottom 4, then avoid finishing 9th, then the hardest goal of all, winning in the first week of September. All those will be challenges. On a serious note I think Richmond are no better off than Carlton. The round 1 match should be a beauty, winner would be setting them self's up for a big year. I don't think Hardwick is the right man to coach Richmond, he has been at the club since 2010 and has never won a final after having a lot of talent at his disposal (Riewoldt, Martin, Cotchin, Rance, Delidio, Newman). Richmond does have a big supporter base and loyal fans, it is a shame their passion can't be seen on the field. If the players had it they would of already won a premiership.

Overall I am happy with the blues fixture. Some more free to air Sunday games and traditional Saturday arvo games against some old rivals. The reality is that the Carlton does not deserve Friday night games until they are seriously pushing for finals. The successful clubs at this point of time Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Sydney and GWS get everything that they deserve for playing attractive football. The days of giving the prime time slots to the 'big 4' are over as none of them will make finals in 2017.The people running Carlton especially should have a good look in the mirror as why the club is where it is today. Trigg says he wishes for more Friday night matches; Well start winning games and playing attractive football and the AFL will give back their 4-5 Friday night games, as when Carlton are successful they are a big drawing club

Melbourne is Melbourne, east, west, north, south it's all Melbourne. It's not even a geographically large city.

"Rd 1 – Pies host dogs at MCG, could be the dogs’ largest ever home and away game" If that does come to pass it'll be the dogs faithful that turn up. My once popular Pies are no longer a draw card for TV or the stands - we just make up the numbers now and the draw reflects that. No longer is Collingwood a "destination" club, for players or supporters and that is reflective in our membership cliff jump, you guys are the new black!..................... Enjoy!

That pretty much sums it up, as far as I know the footy follower is not interested in the ads unless it's footy-comical

"We are the only team in Geelong" WB are the only team in Melbourne's western suburbs. But if they wanted to spend millions of dollars to develop tge Whitten Oval and play home games there, we all know what the AFL would say.

The legitimacy of sports drafts have been tested in Australian courts. They have passed. The very same arguments used to support the draft can easily be applied to the salary cap.

FBS,let's hope so,a strong Richmond would be great for the completion and there is no reason they can't play Friday's in the future and set the G alight.

Col,what does that have to do with the fixture?strange. Legalities proven,it has never been to court so what is proven? Maybe those guys you now seem to be hiding behind made a good point but nothing has been proven. Also on an opinion website people might be wrong,on some occasions people may think they are right but may change an opinion when hearing somebody else's. I'm not saying that is the case here but surely you don't think genuine people never change their opinion on anything. Are you seriously that ruffled that somebody, whilst discussing the draw,is glad Richmond and Carlton won't be featuring on Friday night? I assume your more upset the born to rule, tragically sad Carlton are no longer being seen as worthy of this time slot. Surely your aware of the standard of football they play and their ongoing ladder position? Surely you don't think we must admire a club that is a shell of its former self, one of the greatest clubs to ever participate in our game, that has been brought to its kness by pure arrogance and is continuing to fail as people such as Silvagni,McKay and Glesson continue to destroy the very fabric of this once mighty club while going unquestioned. Why must Carlton go unquestioned? Isn't this the exact reason this club is now the sad, tragic club it is today? Being cross and dillusional will not repair this tragic state of being. And why must you constantly mention the reigning premiers who are now playing seven Friday night games in comparison to Carlton? Yes the tables have turned but it will take more than just thinking or mentioning the Bulldogs to improve Carltons tragic situation especially when morally questionable characters remain at the top.

What? Collingwood, as part of a contract between the afl and the mcc, have to play 14 games at the g for the next quarter century and then compete with the two of them for revenues!

Travelling to a different city to play a 'home' game at your opponents actual home ground isn't really a home game is it? No other team has to do it.

We are the only team in Geelong, who should we be sharing with? sydney and GWS don't share. Brisbane and Gold Coast don't share. RA name one other team in the AFL that has to contribute tens of millions of dollars towards stadium renovations. I'll give you a hint, Geelong is the only one.

Need 85k at the G to break even with 25k at KP. Doesn't happen often enough for the risk.
