Make Moylan fullback for the rest of the Four Nations

By David Lord / Expert

Every now and again a footballer surfaces with the x-factor. Matt Moylan has it – plenty of it.

The 25-year-old Panthers skipper made his Kangaroo debut yesterday in the 54-12 hammering of Scotland in the opening round of the Four Nations at Hull.

Kangaroo coach Mal Meninga told Moylan pre-game to make the most of the opportunity – and to get involved.

Moylan heeded the advice with a superb 80-minute man-of-the-match performance that included four try assists and two line breaks

He gave Meninga a serious message to be selected for the bigger games against New Zealand and England.

And I agree.

To this point, the number one Kangaroo backline is Darius Boyd (1), Josh Mansour (2), Greg Inglis (3), Josh Dugan (4), Valentine Holmes (5), Johnathan Thurston (6), and Cooper Cronk (7).

But it could be a whole lot more destructive with the inclusion of Moylan, and James Maloney who also enjoyed a superb game on debut against the Scots.

It would mean switching the multi-talented Boyd to the wing where he has played the majority of his representative football in Origin and with the Kangaroos, and dropping inconsistent centre Josh Dugan.

That would produce a sensational Kangaroo backline of Moylan (1), Mansour (2), Inglis (3), Maloney (4), Boyd (5), Thurston (6), and Cronk (7).

Meninga could take the softer option and have Moylan with Maloney on the pine, but that’s not the Meninga way – he’s always in a positive mode knowing big players play big games.

And currently, both Moylan and Maloney are big-game players.

It wouldn’t matter who Meninga selects up front, the Kangaroo pack will have the wood on both the Kiwi and English forwards.

England coach Wayne Bennett doesn’t make many bad calls, but naming Sam Burgess as skipper over James Graham, a born leader, wasn’t one of his best.

The three Burgess brothers were virtual passengers this morning in the 17-16 loss to the Kiwis at Huddersfield where the ‘house full’ sign was up.

While Burgess Inc were well off the pace, Graham fired on all eight cylinders.

The loss means England must beat the Kangaroos in a fortnight to have any chance of making the final – and that’s just about none and Buckleys.

Shaun Johnson was the pick of the Kiwis who played a lot better than their last game against the Kangaroos in Perth – and it was Johnson’s drop goal in the 65th minute that was crucial.

Next up England take on Scotland in a double header with the Tasman rivals meeting in the late game.

The make-up of the Kangaroos’ backline will be the talk of this week.

Sounds like selections a wallabies team would make. Put a notoriously poor defender in a key defensive position (especially against the likes of the kiwis) and drop/move/demote one of the teams best and most consistent players in favour of someone who played well against a minnow and they both just happen to have worn a sky blue nsw jersey. (Don't take offence guys just having a dig) only problem I have with the current team is the passengers. Thaiday probably did enough to earn his spot late in the season but he'd have to be on thin ice. Dugan and Fergo just don't belong. Mansour so so so unlucky. If it were allowed (I'm pretty sure it's not but rules may be different in league international comps) I'd be having Oates flown straight in. You need a power runner against the kiwis and while Valentine-Holmes is no pushover by any means he isn't going to get a clear run at Johnson every return. Having said that though I don't think Mal would fly him in even if he could. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who admits to making mistakes. Dave Taylor had 7 or 8 caps for QLD as a case in point.

Hayne Radradra Leilua Feldt B Morris Maloney Milford Here's the other Australian backline David. He looks much better at 6. Milf would go well at 7.

Yes...outside Thurston and inside iInglis and Cronk in the Grandstand where he belongs. Maloney played Cronk off a break in the GF and deserves his spot. It will never happen of course. Cronk is Cronk and he is a Queenslander...as is the coach

Are you serious! Maloney at centre? That is a specialist position and very hard to defend and you want to put a renowned poor defender in there! Agreed Dugan is not the answer, where is Hayne? Oh that's right been on holidays for awhile but last time he played there he was sensational and also much better fullback than Inglis or Boyd.

In a team with great halves i'd rather the better finisher who can still create than the creator that can still finish.

Glenn lazurus never had the chance to line up on the wing outside a kanagroo backline either...

Given by his own admission Maloney hates tackling people I doubt that would end too well.

Yes if boyd played. They would score. Boyd is not a superhuman that no one can score against him.

Thurston is the man based on reputation. Maloney was a key contributor to taking the Sharks to the premiership this year and, in my opinion had a more consistent year then Thurston did - despite the fact it was his first year with the club. Give Maloney another crack.

Spot on Pomoz ! NSW currently has no creative halves, at least until they bite the bullet and throw Cleary into the fray. Not sure they will be game enough this coming year, but probably the next year 2018.. Until then they need a creative player like Moylan to be in the team. He is best suited to ply his trade from fullback where he reads the game and can inject himself into it as the opportunities appear. So I would always have him in as fullback in front of popular favourite Tedesco, and I would have Tedesco on the wing to run the ball back and inject himself in moves. But it is likely that Daley will again opt to move Moylan to 6 to allow Tedesco his fullback spot. This limits Moylan's ball playing time and increases the defence load on him which needs to be assessed in the overall benefit to the team for the sake of giving Tedesco the fullback spot ? Perhaps in 2 years time we might see Cleary & Moylan as the halves for NSW with Tedesco or Tom T at fullback, but for next year, I would have Moylan in his favourite position to maximise his creativity for the team.

Come on Jimmy ! No one is kicking Boyd out on a "whim'. As I stated he will be the Aussie fullback for the rest of this tournament. He wouldn't be my personal choice, however, as I am biased toward the more dynamic Moylan. Tedesco , Boyd , Dugan, Tom T, Wighton, Inglis, Munster & Moylan are all good running fullbacks. In a team featuring the game's leading generals & ball players like Thurston , Cronk & Smith, any of these fullbacks would fit in well, and hence Boyd's good year with QLD & Australia ( which fullback wouldn't have had a good year at the back of those teams ?) These running types just have to position themselves to run off the playmakers. The problem is, if you don't have any playmakers , eg NSW , you need someone that can create the opportunities for others. That's why Moylan will be so vital to NSW going forward, playing the role he does now at Penrith. Ideally he should be at fullback for NSW where he best reads the play and can inject himself into the play when the opportunities present. He will , however, likely be forced to 6, again to accommodate Tedesco ( assuming he is not injured again) , but he will still be NSW's key playmaker next year. Moylan is a far more dynamic player than the other fullbacks and just imagine how well he might go in a team with Thurston, Cronk & Smith beside him rather than against him ?

Moylan was solid against an ordinary team and Boyd has done nothing to lose his spot. Hypothetically, knowing the way Boyd defends, would the Scots have scored those two tries if Boyd was playing?

Maloney defending in the centres would be pretty scary.

Settle down kids. Whilst Maloney is a great player and has the midas touch, JT is the man.

Scott, whether Moylan should be picked for NSW or not, depends entirely on whether you have creativity in the halves. Tedesco is faster, but he is worse in defence and is not a ball playing fullback. If the NSW halves can run the game and create chances, although let's face it, the NSW halves haven't been able to do that for a while, then Moylan's ball playing skills aren't as useful as Tedesco's running game. Moylan then gets to watch the game in comfort of Penrith Leagues because he is not really a winger (too slow). I know it is unlikely, but in the event the NSW halves are not very creative (you know, sort of like they have been for five years), it makes sense to put Moylan at fullback and use Tedesco on the wing and then Ferguson is the odd man out. Dugan is either fullback or on a roof in Canberra sipping pineapple breezers. He is no more a centre than my Nan and everybody knows she always played at lock.

Morgan in centres for Dugan, Moylan on bench. Covers all options. Morgan got his mojo back in qld cup in the centres.. big body, fast and good in defence when it counts! Thiaday should not have toured, shouldn't start in tests that count...
