'Lynnsanity' winds up but fails to deliver on ODI debut

By The Roar / Editor

Chris Lynn’s ODI debut for Australia has fizzled out with the Big Bash League sensation sent packing for just 16 in Friday’s clash against Pakistan at the Gabba.

Lynn lasted only 12 balls before he was caught behind while attempting to slog Hasan Ali, leaving Australia in a difficult spot at 3-52 after 10 overs.

The 26-year-old faced a hat-trick ball on his first delivery after David Warner and skipper Steve Smith were thwarted by Mohammad Amir in successive deliveries.

He survived, then started winding up, smashing a massive six into the grandstands two overs before his dismissal.

It was the only real highlight of Lynn’s innings and a desire for more was probably his undoing, with the wrong shot selection resulting in his dismissal.

Amir bowled full and wide and Lynn’s attempted swipe sent the ball sky high, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan doing well to get under it and glove a difficult catch.

Matthew Wade, who top-scored with an unbeaten 100, said he expects selectors will stick with Lynn despite failing to make an impact against Pakistan.

“He’s hitting the ball really well obviously. Lynny played well I thought,” Wade said.

“I’m not sure what the selectors will do with the team but (he’ll) be fine.

“He could have easily got in and got a big score, he looks like he’s crunching it.”

Lynn, having played five T20 internationals, was rushed into the one-day side on the back of his form for the Heat after scoring 309 runs in five BBL matches.

its international cricket, not like smashing kids in bbl. if you only know how to swing a cricket bat as hard as possible and send the ball as far as possible regardless of the situation, format, opposition and the bowler ,then you should play some other sport not cricket. its not all about sending the ball 100 meters.

Nothing that a longer innings from Smith or Warner can't fix.

Nudge I think Bailey is finished unless there are injuries. Bailey remained good in a crisis, no doubt, but his strike rate of only 76 over the past 3 years was way too slow. Khawaja's strike rate is 90 since he came back into the ODI setup a year ago and he is a steady hand like Bailey. The question is whether Lynn can build innings at four, rather than just going hard.

It's clearly says "AAP" at the bottom of the story. But, by all means, continue your tantrum!

Not sure about having 3 "big hitting" type guys at 4, 5 and 6. Perhaps Wade who is a smart cricketer should move to 4 when we lose 2 early wickets just to consolidate. Bailey played that role well. The champions trophy and next World Cup are both in England so early wickets could well happen. I'd be looking at either Head khawaja or Handscomb to bat at 4 and wouldn't entirely rule out a return for Bailey. Warner Khawaja Smith Head Mitch Marsh Maxwell Wade Faulkner Cummins Starc Hazlewood

I like Lynn and I hope he comes off but we have to remember that BBL isn't such a high standard. It's a step up facing an International attack. 8 teams dilutes the talent pool beyond the 6 state teams so we're seeing club cricketers fill the gaps. It is what it is... colourful, loud, cheap family entertainment. Lynn dominates the BBL because he has talent. Given the chance he'll be a good International player.

It wasn't a great shot by Lynn and he was probably more disappointed than anyone, but like you say, the snipes are swift and very judgemental. Where are the snipes about how terrible Mitch Marsh was with the bat? At least Lynn looked liked he could score some runs. Mitch Marsh couldn't find the centre of his bat with a map and a compass.

I like the cut of this qwetzen's guys gib. I made a couple of comments this morning that weren't published. Sure they were obnoxious, but no more than what I've seen elsewhere. So some writers can be criticized and others are sacrosanct?

Lynn is Australia's form T20 batsman- no doubt. But he's primarily a 20-over batsman. Give him a few matches.
