Leave injured Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Wade out of the Indian tour

By David Lord / Expert

It’s time for Trevor Hohns and his national selection panel to correct two wrong decisions with the first Test against India at Pune just 17 days away.

Mitchell Marsh has a shoulder injury, and keeper Matthew Wade a back problem. Replace them now with Marcus Stoinis and Peter Nevill.

The four-Test series will be hard enough with fit players, let alone those who are under a cloud.

Stoinis and Nevill are in form and they can strengthen the side.

Stoinis would fill the problem number six batting slot, with his medium pace bowling well up to international standard.

Nevill has always been by far the best gloveman in Australian cricket, but he was dropped for the third Test side against South Africa because he can’t bat well enough, according to Hohns.

So far this season he’s scored an unbeaten 179 for NSW against Tasmania at Bellerive, and last week 118 in a 202-run fifth wicket partnership with Ed Cowan against the Vics at the MCG.

Pity Nevill can’t bat.

With Stoinis to supply pace support to Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, that frees up a bowling berth for a second spinner.

Offie Nathan Lyon is the senior spinner, so it would depend on the state of the wicket as to whether left arm orthodox Steve O’Keefe gets the nod, or leggie Mitchell Swepson makes his baggy green debut.

So barring any further injuries, Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Shaun Marsh, and Glenn Maxwell will be sharing the drinks waiter job for the series.

This is how the side should line up:

David Warner (vc)
Matt Renshaw
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith (c)
Peter Handscomb
Marcus Stoinis
Peter Nevill
Mitchell Starc
Nathan Lyon
Steve O’Keefe/Mitchell Swepson
Josh Hazlewood

But it will be a different story among the bowlers for the five-Test Ashes series next summer.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins will be raring to go to make a dynamic three-way pace attack with Starc and Hazlewood, and will be well served with Stoinis in support.

The Englishmen are well-versed in facing offies – they are a dime a dozen in county cricket.

But England rarely face leggies, so Swepson, depending on how well he fares in India, and Adam Zampa will be high on the selector’s list of contenders.

The batting order should, therefore, look like this.

David Warner (vc)
Matt Renshaw
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith (c)
Peter Handscomb
Marcus Stoinis
Peter Nevill
Pat Cummins
Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Swepson/Adam Zampa
Josh Hazlewood

And in the Shield this season Faulkner ave 57 with the bat HS100NO Stonis 14,5 HS 32 Career Faulkner age 26 Batting 32.66 Bowling 186 @ 24.5 Stonis age 27 Batting 36.12 Bowling 30 @ 49 Really does blow the free wicket idea away, batting in ODIs is a totally different beast to FC and tests, just for giggles on top of that Faulkners test bowling average is below 20. Comparing FC stats with MM age 25 Batting Ave 29.05 and bowling 113 @ 28 Stonis just doesn't stack up over time.

Nooooo!!! Poor WA players. Shaun Marsh, Behrendorff, Agar, Paris, NCN...now Sammy. Whenever a WA boy looks like securing an Oz spot or being picked for the first time, along comes injury. Inglis will be worth watching.

Don.. Whitemans done for the season, major surgery , 3-6 months off..he's out of everything now.. Great shame, but with what happened to Tim Paine, they figured to get it sorted now as opposed to playing semi injured all the time.

That's like David's argument re: Wade and Marsh. They are not injured for the tour...they are resting so they will be ready. On the tour, Wade won't have his sore back or Marsh his niggle. Why? They rested. Whiteman had his injury last week, gave his finger a rest so now he is fit to play this Shield game. I can't wait for Whiteman to play Test cricket because then you'll see another gem keeper, Josh Inglis. That boy can bat too. ( He might be retained ahead of Klinger as a batsman in this next Shield match...only averaging 23 this season).

Having gone to Sril Lanka to watch the third test SHAUN MARSH must play at 6 it's crucial to Australia's chances. Looking at Warner and Khwaja's records over in the sub continent it makes me very nervous for the top order especially with the young Renshaw also there. No point having an all rounder at six especially when Smith refuses to bowl them until the 50th over as he did in the third test in Sri Lanka with Marsh. How can wwe play Wade his keeping skills simply aren't good enough, how about Paine otherwise we may aswell play Handscomb as keeper and take in an extra batsmen.

Surely you have seen Stoinis in his 8 seasons of Shield cricket. Mitch Marsh...in his 7 seasons has played many varied styles of innings.

What can we aim for in India? I'd suggest that if we take the game into the fifth day or get a draw they would be good results. We then need batsmen who value their wicket, can put away the flashy shot and occupy the crease for long periods. I'd therefore suggest that Neville pips Wade onthis alone. I haven't seen enough of Stoinis in the Sheild to judge and blasting 140 in a one dayer doesn't answer the question im asking but i dont recall Mitchel Marsh change his game depending on the situation. G Maxwell also wouldn't fit. Unless there is an allrounder with these requirements, it would seem S Marsh might be the best bet at 6.

John what an empty, cliched campaign you wage with the "Nevill followed Marsh...that why he failed". Marsh losing his wicket is not a collapse, it's a wicket. The collapse comes from the batsmen before Marsh, not the allrounder. If you expect Marsh to arrest the collapse, why don't you expect the same from the equally talented Nevill? You criticize Marsh but exonerate Nevill.

I couldn't agree more with you regarding correcting the Marsh and Wade errors before they cost us. I also seesome value in your choice of players to fix the mistakes. The only thing I can disagree with you is your "pity Nevill can't bat" barb. He can bat. His FC record is testament of that. In fact he averages more than Wade does in FC cricket. His unbeaten 60 in Perth against South Africa is further example that he can bat. What seems to be his problem at test level, is that he struggles to make runs when regularly following Mitch Marsh out to bat and the regular collapse that comes with batting in a test lineup carrying Marsh at six. 10 times in 23 test innings, Nevill has walked to the crease with the score 5/150 or worse. Six times for 5/82 and worse (He made 66 on one of those occasions). Sadly, twice with the score at 5/21 or worse. A far superior glove-man, Nevill was dropped, basically, because his top order were regularly failing. With that in mind, there can be no better selection than Chris Hartley, whose keeping is as good as anyone going around at present and while his FC average is only 33, most of the runs he makes rescues the Qld top order. In the past three years, it seems prudent to not just look for a keeper who can handle a bat, but rather focus on a keeper who has experience and a proven track record of making valuable runs when walking to the crease at 5/100 ... Hartley is that man.

While I agree that both Wade and Mitch Marsh shouldn't tour it is mainly on their form that I agree not their injuries, Mitchell Marsh hasn't done a great deal with the red ball this season and neither hasd Wade in his four tests, few runs and missed chances.Whether it is Nevill or Whiteman to go, either would be deserving. For the contentious number 6, pick a batsman. We do not have any allrounders so a batsman who earns his place as a batsman is what is required not a jack of all traders but master of none. This being the case, it rules out M Marsh and Maxwell. Shaun Marsh has two hundreds and an 80 in Sril Lanka. Play him at 6. On the bowlers, last time we won in India it was with a great pace attack. Even Warnie was ordinary over there. Play three quicks.

7 nsw players out of 11 is too many. Sounds likely that Wade will be fit to play and he has earned his spot. Marsh should never have got a gig in the first instance.

Well done Peter. Finally a cricket-selection comment piece on this site that makes sense. I agree with both your teams for those series - and therefore the reasoning. (Although I hate faux selectors who hyphenate two players into one spot: take a punt man haha). Swepson is the leggie to take a punt on in long-form, not Zampa. And don't underestimate the emergence of Stanlake even further before the Ashes begins in a year ... thanks!

Whiteman is probably the best gloveman around now. Very safe keeping up. Brilliant and agile keeping back. As a batsman he is dynamic, fluent and has every shot on the book. Sadly, Hartley was unlucky to be around during the Gilly/Haddin eras. It has happened to a lot of cricketers. Jo Angel in the Glen McGrath period. (We always mention the batsmen).

He has done that...a number of times. There are many I'd pick ahead of Stoinis but not because Stoinis "needs more experience". It won't be long before words like sralwart, evergreen and vereran will be used for him. He started in the WA squad as an 18yo.

I was unaware and curious about their speed comparisons, so thanks for that mmacter. Considering Mcgrath was only a couple of yards faster, Stoinis isn't so much of a slouch with the ball as a) his stats can suggest b) as I describe him

@qwetzen, it's true stoinis is struggling with the bat this season. But since 2014,only four batsman has scored more shield runs than stoinis. He is averaging 14 this season, not under 10,which is very poor anyway. But the man selectors picked is averaging 6 in this shield season and averages 22 in a 19 match test career.

@jonty,stoinis is much quicker than Cartwright. He was consistently bowling 135-137 against NZ.And he has a pretty effective short bowl.cartwright is too slow in my liking.
