Sydney Swans vs Collingwood Magpies Highlights: AFL live scores, blog

Two winless teams kick off Round 3 at the SCG, as the Sydney Swans host the Collingwood Magpies. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:50pm (AEDT).

After a surprise loss in Round 1, the Swans looked like they might run over the Western Bulldogs in last week’s grand final rematch, but it wasn’t to be.

As for Collingwood, they looked good in their narrow season-opening loss to the reigning premiers, but a loss in Round 2 to the Richmond Tigers suggests their prospects aren’t any better than last year.

But it’s still early days. There is plenty of time for the Pies – or any team – to turn things around.

The Pies have Levi Greenwood and Travis Varcoe back in the team, while James Aish and Jarryd Blair have been dropped.

The Swans lose Kurt Tippett to an ankle injury, replaced by Callum Sinclair. Other inclusions are Jordan Foote and Jordan Dawson for his debut, replacing Harry Cunningham and Jeremy Laidler.

This leaves Sydney with an especially young side, with 13 players having appeared in 50 games or fewer, compared to seven for the visitors.

The Swans are blessed with a core of very experienced, capable leaders – Lance Franklin, Josh Kennedy, Kieren Jack, Luke Parker, Dan Hanneberry and Heath Grundy – and they’re going to need these guys to make big contributions.

For Collingwood’s part, they’d be hoping to at least break even in the midfield, where Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar have started the season well.

Prediction
Sydney are younger and more fragile than you’d expect last year’s grand finalists to be, and the Pies’ experience advantage means they’re a real chance to cause an upset.

However, while the Swans will rely on a small group of players, those same players have repeatedly proven they’re up to most challenges, and the superior number of matchwinners in the home side’s squad will be the difference.

Sydney by 20 points.

Freo are rubbish. Been uncompetitive since the start of last year. Were suspect in the second half of 2015 when Fyfe got injured. Sydney lost a couple of close ones.

They are as far off the pace as your version of Freo is.

Not since 1999 have the Swans started a season at 0 and 3. They played finals. Thought Collingwood did very well to hold them off, despite their amazing record under Buckley of holding onto three quarter leads.

Newman was a little uneasy with ball in hand at times. All of them have potential though.

On a serious, not-at-all related note, are these votes compulsory to do because Josh indicated to me that they aren't?

Uh ok. I was being sardonic there but that's fine. Tone doesn't always translate in text. But I commented on the umpiring alone 4 times in a 3 hour contest. If that's impolite to you I can't do anything about that because not bringing up issues is impolite to me. I commented what I felt was pertinent at the time.

Franklin was the guy setting up the goals at the death. It'd be interesting to look back at the vision of those last few minutes and see how closely he was being marked by the Collingwood defenders. I'd suggest very closely indeed.

Hayward was noticeable, but I thought Newman was the most impressive of their kids. Florent looks like he'll be a good player.

Votes Tricky votes tonight. In the end I went with all inside midfielders, probably reflecting the way the game was played. 3. Dan Hanneberry (Sydney) - He had a huge influence, particularly around stoppages, but his disposal under pressure was also very good. 32 possessions, 6 tackles, 9 clearances and a goal. 2. Taylor Adams (Collingwood) - Plenty of touches and generally used it well. Set up a couple of goals. 1. Adam Treloar (Collingwood) - Kicked probably the goal of the season, and had 15 tackles to go with his 28 touches. Perhaps not the cleanest ball, though. I thought very hard about Alex Fasolo, but he didn't have a huge influence after half time.

I thought Will Hayward was the best Swans youngster on the ground - 3 goals in a low scoring, intense game isn't an easy feat. Florent had some nice moments too. Any thoughts, Tom?

The thing is XI, I like to engage with people on here, and I don't mind talking a little about the umpiring. But when one or more poster is banging on about it all the time, I either have to ignore it - which I don't want to do - or switch my focus to the umpiring - which I don't want to do, unless it really is the biggest factor in the game; almost never the case. It's fine to mention it if it's bugging you. But I think it's a bit impolite to bang on about it.

Insults work better when people have some idea what you're talking about.

I thought Buddy was one of the Swans best despite no goals. Created a lot of scoring opportunities, was a great target in the midfield when the Swans were coming out of defence. Maybe it's good for the Swans to have an injury crisis, fall down the ladder this year. Give Longmire free reign to experiment. They'd have to win 13/19 now just to make the 8 and they're supposed to lose the next two games. Even before the season started I pencilled them in to lose the next two. So they'll need 13/17 to make the finals. Probably won't happen. They're not far off the pace. They'll be back next year.

Match report Collingwood have their first win of the season after a thrilling one point victory over the Sydney Swans. The Magpies were very much the stronger team in the first quarter, dominating possession and inside 50s, but would have been a little disappointed to only take a 21 point lead into quarter time. Sydney woke up in the second quarter and worked their way back into the game, but with Franklin pushing up the ground they in turn found it hard to capitalise on their own chances. Collingwood did enough on the counterattack to stay in front, albeit with a reduced lead at half time. By the third quarter both sides were playing somewhere near their best footy. As in the second term, the Swans seemed to have more of the play and the momentum, but Collingwood had their attacking periods as well. At one point the Pies threatened to kick beyond a three goal lead, but Sydney finished more strongly and as we turned for the final change the visitors still lead by just 9 points. Sydney kicked the opening goal of the fourth quarter and for most of the term seemed to be knocking down the door, but once again the Pies did just enough to hang on to the lead. Nerves seemed to take over for both sides and the scoring dried up. After a few missed chances for Collingwood to extend their lead, young Oliver Florent brought the Swans back within a point after capitalising on some great work by Franklin. And then with the minutes ticking away, the Swans went ahead for the first time in the game with two more behinds. But a superb clutch goal by Hoskin Elliot restored Collingwood's lead, and consecutive behinds gave the visitors a vital seven point buffer as we entered the final two minutes. Another Buddy assist and Swans goal brought the game back to a one point margin. In the final seconds, the Swans had the ball forward and the chance to get one final score. A dropped mark to Kieren Jack at half forward with 30 seconds to play was their last chance, however, and when the siren sounded Collingwood had held on in a thriller. The Magpies get their first win, and redemption after a poor result last week. They had to fight as hard as any team does for a victory, despite starting much the better of the two teams. It was their dogged defence, and their ability to pinch goals on the counterattack, that gave them the narrow win. Next week Collingwood return to Melbourne to play St Kilda. They have a chance to get their sesaon back on track. The few seconds of play that separated a win from a loss are a chasm in terms of where their season appears to be right now. Sydney, last year's grand finallists, now find themselves winless after three rounds. They'll rue their sleepy start to the game, and their failure to take some major chances in the last quarter – indeed throughout the game. The silver lining for the Swans is that they did field a very inexperienced team and some of those younger players – in particular Nic Newman – showed very good signs. But the reality is that when more than half of your side have played fewer than 50 games it's going to be difficult to be consistently successful. And now the Swans travel across the country to play the Eagles, before the Sydney derby back here at the SCG. It's not a good immediate draw for a team on 0-3. This game went right down to the wire and genuinely could have broken either way. Truly thrilling Friday night footy. It feels like the consequences of the result are well out of proportion to the closeness of the game.

Please tell me people are still watching Channel 7 right now because these scenes of BT walking around a strangely empty Collingwood rooms are hilarious. It's bemusing stuff

We're not the best of friends today, dude, but I actually agree with you. Their midfield was great tonight, especially with tackling and their incredible pressure, but their efficiency was a worry.

"Wasn't awful" is damning with faint praise, isn't it? Here's hoping the Showdown lives up to the hype and isn't over at half time. Good luck with the call!
