TELL US: Who should be the Origin halves and fullbacks for Game 1?

By Riordan Lee / Editor

State of Origin is just around the corner, and it’s never too early to start arguing about team selections.

We’ve got resident Roar Expert Mary Konstantonopolous joining us in the offices for this week’s Roar LIVE to try to help us wade through the minefield that is Origin selections.

While selections have seemed to purely be a problem for New South Wales over the past decade, injuries to the great Greg Inglis and workhorse Matt Scott has meant Maroons selectors will be under the pump a bit as well this year.

Tell us in the comments who’s impressed you over the first seven rounds of footy and who you’d pick for the crucial first game on May 31.

Has James Tedesco done enough to keep Tom Trbojevic and Matt Moylan at bay?

Do the Blues stick with Adam Reynolds, as they did in the first two games last year, or is it time to hand the reigns back to Mitchell Pearce?

For Queensland, Billy Slater or Darius Boyd – who takes the number one jersey?

Jonathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk are surely due for a loss soon… right? Is that absolutely nonsensical line of logic enough for you to dump two of the surest things in Origin?

Let us know!

Roar Live will be streamed this afternoon at around 5:45pm on The Roar’s Facebook page. It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

I believe Slater will play due to the loss of Inglis. Kev won't want rookie combinations out wide so will have Boyd outside I'm thinking Gagai and on the other side Val-Holmes outside Chambers. Slater has been in pretty good form since coming back so I don't think we have anything to worry about apart from hoping that shoulder holds up. I can't imagine how Storm supporters go watching him. My stomach tightens up every time he touches his shoulder.

You need a man who is great under pressure...a man who can coolly slot field goals to win the game...a proven winner...there is only one choice for halfback: Mitchell Pearce. No-one is better when the pressure is on. Amazing kicker just ask Joey.

I'm going to go left field and say James Maloney and Chad Townsend for the halves. Both are in excellent form, and have the advantage of having played together in a really strong team right now.

Hi PNG, the Blues selectors have been selecting defensive teams and playing the "safe option" for too long and it simply hasn't worked. We should be more aggressive and pick guys who have more attacking flair. Pick some blokes who can score tries and see if the Maroons can outscore us. Guys like Tede, BJ, Turbo etc. If the Blues are to lose by 4, I'd rather see them have a crack and lose 30-26 than lose 8-4.

Therein lies much of the woes of the NSW side...there is little in it when one looks at the backs and forwards, but NSW have not been able to establish a half pairing that can match the consistency of the QLD halves. JT and Cronk in concert with Smith are the best game managers...perhaps the best "trio" ever... Boyd will be the Maroons fullback.

This team should be able to do it 1. Tedesco 2. Wighton 3. Crocker 4. Bird 5. Tom Trbojevic 6. Maloney 7. Pearce 8. Fifita 9. Peats 10. Vaughn 11. Courdner 12. Graham 13. Frizell 14. Klemmer 15. Woods 16. Prior 17. Moylan

Tedesco at fullback. I would like to see Maloney and Austin in the halves, but I think Maloney and Pearce will be picked. I'd also pick McInnes at hooker, he's been in good form so far this year.

How many chances has Pearce had? How many winng series has he been involved with. No way should they even consider him. Hayne has no form so shouldn't be considered. Woods is another with little form. The Maroon side looks good but a brave call in playing Slater on the wing but he would go well.

I'm a Dragons fan and think Dugan is a decent player but he is not NSW best option. Rarely scores, very few try assists, not even close to a speedster. His strength is metre returns and defence... but in reality NSW need points. Tedesco full back, Austin and Maloney halves with Peachy off the bench.

Herein lies the problem for NSW - no real stand out for the halves. Based on team form, Dragons, Sharks and Roosters should dominate the team. Dugan fullback, Malony and Pearce halves. Wallace is tough but slow, and time for specialist dummy half. QLD - same as the last 10 years.

Much rather have Trobojevic than Tedesco as the blues no. 1. Teddy, for mine, has been found out attacking wise. Everyone seems to know that he is only going to tuck it under his arm and run. Dont think I have seen him pass the ball all year! The halves combination...geese this is a tough one. Thought Nathan Cleary would do better so far this year and throw his name into the hat - however he has shown this season that he is still a kid. Personally, I'd go a Maloney/Austin partnership or Sezer/Austin.

agreed re Pearce and Keary (although if they keep picking Pearce it might work out one day). agree re Boyd at 1 (but I have a sneaking suspicion that Slater will get to wear the 1, albeit that they two will switch positions during the game)

Will be defensive affair, wont be many points on offer. Safest option would be the big bodied Dugan at the back. Teddy 18/19th man in case of training mishaps. Teddy to come in when combinations in attack are more free flowing in 2nd game. Dugan to hold down a wing/centre spot still. A must in the team, has never let down NSW when in the Blue.

The QLDer in me wants to see Dugan, Josh Reynolds and Pearce. And Farah at hooker. If I was a Blue then Tedesco, Bird (who cares if he plays there for the Sharks?) Maloney with Wallace at 9.
