The Queensland Origin dynasty is over? Not bloody likely

By David Lord / Expert

If anyone honestly believes the Queensland dominance of Origin football is over, they must also believe in Santa and the tooth fairy.

I’m a proud New South Welshman who marvelled at the way the Blues consistently sliced through the Maroons like a hot knife through butter for the entire 80 minutes.

And when Queensland looked like scoring in the second half, the Blues produced one miraculous try-saving tackle after another.

It could easily be said NSW played the perfect game, and it wouldn’t be far from the truth.

But Queensland didn’t play badly to produce one of the all-time great Origin spectacles.

Queensland also had Johnathan Thurston, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, and Matt Scott missing – whose total Origin appearances totalled more than the entire 17-man NSW squad.

On June 21, Thurston’s likely to play, Slater will be brought in the from the cold, and there are three willing Cowboys up front kicking the Maroon door down like Coen Hess, Javed Bowen, and Ethan Lowe, while Corey Norman has cleaned his act up off the field at Parramatta.

There’s no way Queensland is finished, they are just starting a game late.

A side doesn’t lose its proud culture overnight.

They have won win 10 of the last 11 Origin series, and won 22 of the last 34 Origins so are hardly likely to forget how to be successful again.

And there’s one more vital factor, Cooper Cronk’s career path.

At the end of the season the champion halfback will leave the Storm and move to Sydney to be with his fiancee Tara Rushton.

The move is a given, but whether Cronk will retire to a full-time media career like Tara, or link with a Sydney NRL club, is very much undecided.

The media path would be the soft but very lucrative long term option, but if Queensland loses the Origin series, there’s no way Cronk would hang up his boots with that bad taste in his mouth.

No way.

So there’s a lot at stake for June 21 which only makes this series one of the most intriguing of all time.

Write off Queensland at your own peril.

QLD have an embarrassment of riches in the spine Milford Hunt Morgan Cherry Evans Taylor Norman Friend Mccullough Its in the forwards I see them struggling to compete with NSW. The cronulla sharks have a stronger pack than QLD.

Consider you guys lucky that Dugan plays at Centre for NSW??? He is the centre picked for Aussie too. Maybe the QLDer coaches are stupid to keep picking him there too by your logic... It was essentially two full time centres vs two full time fullbacks playing centres but look who won??? So what if Hayne and Dugan missed tackles, for them to not have tries scored through them speaks of how dismal the two QLD centres were. Like I said, two full time centres should have toyed with two 'not-so' full time centres but that didn't happen. You should be blaming your own lack of talent there instead of trying to belittle the ones who actually performed in a position that they don't play full time in.

This dynasty, yes is pretty much over. It was their last hurrah anyway with Thurston and possibly Cronk retiring. I'd say it would have been Scott's last also. It might be a bit to and fro for the next few years but NSW have a great forward pack and fantastic depth, whereas Queensland are stocked for backrowers but light in props.

Jimbob is right to say WTF about the chances of Javid Bowen improving Qld's plight in game 2. He plays well down the pecking order at the Cowboys, behind O'Neill.

Dynasty as reffered to in sports means success over many years with the same persons, though that could refer to the coach, in this case its the group of players, Cronk and Thurston they should have switched to rugby union this season. Slater becuase he is coming back from a shoulder injury, his legs have been rested so he could go another year at club level but that would be it,. Cameron Smith this should be his last year at club level what he is doing out there is coming in as the 3rd or 4th tackler so he needs to be replaced. So you would call it the Smith Cronk Thurston Slater dynasty and its certainly over.

Don, I would really like to see Morgan in the centres. He's a good attacking player that can create something on the edges. He is not quick off the mark like Milford but he can leave defenders grabbing at air when he hits the ball at pace. This is why he had success in the fullback role. Morgan can also ball play and position support players at speed causing indecision from defenders if he gets outside his opponent. e.g.. GF 2015 add that to his short kicking ability and he can catch out edge defenders who push up to quick. Morgan is not an impact player. He isn't a middle 3rd defender or dummy half runner. Queensland has the best dummy half in the world playing 80min why would you have Morgan in the middle because he isn't quick out of the blocks and never does that role at club level either. He has to many handling errors to be a primary ball player. Slater and JT are possibly the best support players in the history of the game. The Queensland forwards missed that badly. Cameron Munster is that type of player? Changes that should be happening. Wallace for Lillyman, Hess for Myles, Lowe/Lawerance for Guerra, Slater for Boyd. Munster for O'Neil but at 5/8 and Milford off the bench

Yep ! It is very simple really ! The key players that have made QLD so invincible for a decade are now in their mid 30's , the game is getting faster, and their legs are getting slower and their bodies are succumbing to injury more often. Their end in Origin is already over for some and is nigh for the others. Its the natural progression of things. QLD should think less about adoring their past exploits right now and look to rebuild without delay.

It's not his fault - he's not allowed to pass on religious grounds.

Yep, it was hard to read any further than that. Sorry David, but on what planet is Bowen knocking down the door for selection? Qld's obvious inclusion is the Australian Test winger in Valentine Holmes. You know, that guy Kevvie will over look again in his haste to move Boyd to wing so he can include another member of the dads army crew in Slater.

NSW gave us the reality check that we needed, and I thank them for it. QLD need to rebuild now, and not wait 5 years like NSW did.

We are still looking thin in the centre even with Gagai there. Consider us very fortunate that Nsw are playing a non passing fullback at centre in Josh Dugan. I can't recall a centre so reticent to pass a footy...

Hope so, NSW need to humiliate QLD this series and then for the next 5 years.

I expect QLD to be given a repeat dose in Sydney and perhaps an even stronger one.

You will find the NSW centres - Hayne and Dugan were ineffectual in defence. Yes - O'Neill was a passenger but replace him with Gagai and you have better defenders and better attackers. Hayne scored one try through a gap that my mum walked through. Apart from that, he let through the Qld backline three times. (Don't even start me on Hayne's celebration and the NSW sports media lapping it up - there's no Hayne in T-E-A-M). As with everyone else, I agree that Qld's biggest problems are in the engine room up front.

Spot on. The forward pack is our weakness, We so much missed Scott and Parker. Who are the offloading forwards we have now. A? Papa can do a bit, that's it. QLD though has a history of finding unfashionable forwards who step up at Origin time. Look I am not sure but I think Simms might be one of those. If we don't change the forward roster we lose ,so if he doesn't work , so be it. Hess in, Wallace in, Simms in. You can work out who to leave out.

Well ,after the dust has settled,NSW was the best bet of the year ,so far.And it was a selection triumph for the Blues, not coaching, and NSW has the luck to have a few more forwards on the bench or missed selection, and centres and wingers as well. Where as I cannot bring to mind who they will select to get QLD going. Their forwards lacked venom ,the 5/8 and two centres outplayed, their two wingers were up to it and Oats wore himself out catching and running the ball back . I look forward to see what the Queenslanders will do re selection. Sava

Of course a fit Thurston comes in, but props are Qld priority 1 - Wallace and Sims, and a third, if they can find one. Myles, Lilyman and Thaiday were lacking size, strength and fitness compared to NSW props 2-4. They made little forward yards and in defence, were unable to bring down or push back. Daley's '5 minute' captain's run might have given his props fresh legs and confidence. Not just Fifita, but Woods and Klemmer played their best Origin games. As for the noise and hand-wringing on Slater, he's in form but also avoiding contact. Can he outplay Boyd, who's in career-high form and did well in a beaten side? For mine, Boyd's ball-playing beats Slater's chiming-in. The flat style of Daley, Sterling, Peats and Pearce gave every inch of advantage and momentum off the play the ball and Qld struggled. The forwards battle seemed 2/3 to 1/3, advantage NSW. If they get near that - and they have the cattle and style - then Thurston and Cronk are pressured. No Inglis and Scott pinching 15-20m with dont-argues. They won't want to play out the back, Thurston will need to push up and draw the tackler and put his body up for punishment, a bit like Joey Johns in his final return. Will he be up for it after a game in 2 months? We'll see. Even without Milford, Papalli might need a mini reprise of his role as shadow - he did protect, but was frequently puffing offside or out-of-line, reduced in attack, and the middle defence was sometimes down a man and found out. The Dynasty's over if/when the kings are no longer clearly on top. Looks to me like we're there already.

I said in an article yesterday that Qld have far more depth and better talent than Nsw coming through in the halves and at hooker and are in good shape at fullback, wing and back row. Qld don't have a clear group of young talent coming through at prop or centre. Wallace and Hess will add something but we've gone from a clear line of succession like Webke, Petero, Price, Myles, Scott etc and fillers here and there like Shillington, Hannant and Taylor, to not having a young guy with a few years NRL and a year or 2 of SOO bench starts before being considered the incumbent. At Centre we look really thin without Inglis without a clear set of quality options beyond Chambers. We'll soon likely be looking at Ricky Leutele...
