Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs: NRL live scores, blog, highlights

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The Canterbury Bulldogs are under pressure and at the last chance saloon, but things won’t get any easier when they make the trek north to take on the Brisbane Broncos. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

The Bulldogs are coming into this match off a bye, but it’s been a struggle for Des Hasler’s men this season. Sitting 13th on the ladder with just seven wins, it leaves them on 18 competition points.

With seven rounds of action to go, the bare minimum they can afford to win if they want to play in the finals is five. In saying that, there is every chance the qualification mark will be 30 and with an ordinary for and against of negative 59 they may well have to win six.

Moses Mbye looks in two minds every time he touches the ball and they are predictable. Add to that, the role of Matt Frawley is confusing, to say the least.

Despite the fact they beat Newcastle before the bye, it was a struggle and required two tries at the death.

Captain James Graham will still be missing for the Bulldogs, but in truth it may improve their chances against the Broncos.

Often, the Bulldogs forwards get in the way of the creative plays in the opposition 20 and with Graham out, it not only gives Mbye and Josh Reynolds a chance to stand up, but also hands responsibility to Danny Fualalo and Raymond Faitala-Mariner, who have been among their best performers this year. Whether that changes attacking structure slightly remains to be seen.

The Broncos, on the other hand have taken the somewhat baffling decision of dropping Jamayne Isaako. He made his debut at fullback last week and did a good job in the Broncos win over Newcastle, but after being named there on Tuesday, he has since been replaced with Kodi Nikorima.

Whether Nikorima can handle the fullback spot is a question in itself. He has struggled previously when handed the role, but it’s been said he played most of junior footy there, so it could put some fresh life into his stuttering season.

Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford and Benji Marshall will continue their three-way half rotation for the Broncos while Matt Gillett and Josh McGuire return after the Origin window.

The Broncos had the already aforementioned victory over Newcastle last week and coming off a five-day turnaround, this game spells danger for Wayne Bennett’s men. They currently sit fourth on 26 competition points though, and will be keen to secure their spot in the top eight over the next fortnight.

Prediction
The Broncos should win this, and comfortably but it doesn’t change the fact it’s a danger game. Canterbury have plenty of problems to iron out and their attack just doesn’t look like it’ll threaten Brisbane.

Broncos by 12.

Josh Reynolds was trying to take a quick tap in an attacking position while the defensive line was still retreating to get set. Blair deliberately played at the ball to stop him doing that. Whether it would have ended up with points, and whatever the scoreboard was at the time it was a deliberate act. That binning was warranted. I agree with the blocking, it is getting beyond a joke. Some times people are taken out quite deliberately and its let go, other times it's penalised. It's a crap shoot and the players know it. There needs to be something done about this.

Okay, we need to talk about the sin-binning of Blair. There are at least 5 or 6 similar incidents of intentional fouls to slow the opposition down every game, often many more. Archer said at the start of the year that his referees we going to start binning players, especially within the 20 - Canberra got one bin early in the season, and then the idea seemed to have been shelved. To bin a player from a team that was as far ahead as Brisbane were last night is to be seen doing something without the risk of actually affecting the result. When punching became an automatic sin bin, suddenly players stopped punching one another, so they're all capable of moderating their behaviour pretty quickly - if the same penalty was applied to other obviously intentional fouls, they'd stop happening too. "Blocking" - at the moment, the only time it's even penalised is when the infringement is so egregious that it can't be ignored. Morris' last night should be a sin bin, for example. Intentional Offside - When a clearly offside player plays at the ball to prevent a speedster from picking it up in broken play. "He knew he needed to play at that, otherwise [the opposition] would've been away". Sin bin. Offside/within the 10 - On the tryline, when players don't even attempt to get back onside. Assess a penalty try based on none of the offside players being there. No onside player within cooee? Penalty try. On the subject of penalty tries, why not award one and give a sin bin? I can't think of another sport that chooses to only assess an individual penalty or a team penalty, but not both? Weird. Handball in front of goal? Card, and a penalty shot. Intentional foul stopping a try in union? Card, and a penalty try.

'McTavish' the Dogs never had the ball for 70 min of the game, they were incapable of 'knocking on' or be allowed to knock on by the refs. lol

I know how you feel. 42-12 and with Boyd, Oates and Esse-Esse (who was great for us in the 1st half of the season) still all out - sitting 2nd on the table (at least until other matches this weekend are played)...I feel like I should be a lot happier. But it was a scrappy first half and we got lucky with some calls throughout the game. The dogs got a couple as well but we definitely got the rub of the green. We also butchered at least three tries which on one hand is a positive because at least we're creating opportunities but on the other hand...poor execution like that could really hurt against the top teams. For now though, I'll choose to look on the positives. Currently sitting 2nd after the Origin period, a few good players still to come back in. It has been such a disjointed season with Hunt, Milford and Boyd all out injured for extended periods, so I'm hoping that it is all hands on deck and running into form at the right end of the season. If we finish top 4 it's only 3 games in a row to the Premiership and I honestly think if we're in top form we can do that.

Was at the game last night and some poor decisions both ways. Refs seemed to have determined that dogs were incapable of knocking a ball on.

Pretty good performance by Brisbane in the end there. They are looking pretty good and with Boyd to return have some depth now. They are definitely going well at the right time of the season.

Yes that is very true, last night there seem to be a 'one way' refereeing eye, as usual the Broncs got all the decisions. I wonder what the Broncs fans would have said if they would have been penalised and a forward pass like that given against them for a try??? But that doesn't happen very often and RL has to live with refereeing like that and cop it sweet!!! Its a shame that referees are not accountable and they seem to change games, at their will!!! The Dogs were playing well in the first half and that 'kick in the guts' try was not warranted.

The page pertaining to forward passes appears to have been removed from the rule book recently. Ya gotta feel f'n hard done by when ya team gets pinged for it , I'd say they would let between 5 and 10 go almost every game , with some being so blatant the only people in the stadium that didn't see it were the refs.

The dogs this year have played well between their 20 metre line and the opponent's 20 metre line. Big forwards making yards up the middle. But, no kicking game to speak of and no ability to turn it up within 20 metres of the goal line at either end. Brisbane have a good attack, but they're also good in defence. Particularly from dummy half and A and B defenders.

Massive defensive effort by the Dogs last night. It took Brisbane a very long time to break that wall. The scoreline didn't really reflect the game and is flattering the Broncos a bit. This was the best I have seen the Dogs play in what seems like an age, you actually got the feeling that they could score points. They are certainly a team with a lot of heart, but there is something missing. Brisbane were very good but not great. Ben Hunt had actually had a blinder, if he can keep that up they are in with a good shot. They took advantage of some very tired defence and ran away with the game. Even when they couldn't get across the line they were able to keep the pressure on which ultimately led to points. Add a couple of lucky tries and some individual brilliance and they were deserving winners. I think the Dogs are done, I wouldn't put money on them making the 8 from here.

Yeah, they looked great until the ref gave the Broncs that foward pass try and a few other decisions that most here just overlook, including you!

Yeah...by swinging I meant at least they were throwing the ball around and having a go rather than the offensive tripe they've been serving up for the past three months. It still didn't account for much I guess. Score line wasn't reflective of the game. The Broncos got a couple before half time from questionable decisions plus the last try from a legal one on one strip by Reynolds that was blown up. Not blowing up about it, Dogs were well beaten. Early in the second half everything that could have gone wrong for the Bulldogs did go wrong, Quite literally, the bounce of the ball went against us at every stage. A mathematical possibility is just that...next to no possibility at all! As Scott wrote earlier, one loss in the next 10 weeks and even the mathematical chance is gone. Is this a team that can win 10 in a row? Hahahahahaha....aaaahhh

Have to win 6 from 6 and some big wins too as your for and against is not great- best you can finish on is 30 if you win all games- LAST SIX GAMES - Panthers/Eels/Rabbits/Sea Eagles/Titans/Dragons

Dogs go down swinging 42 to 12- if that is swinging its strike three your out - as in Hasler - he has to go

Don't know where the Dogs go from here - they have Woods and Foran in the Kennel next year but surely time for a new coach as Hasler's game plan has had it's day well and truly- Dogs looked slow although it's the most expansive game I've seen them play for quite a while- Still they don't have the game to be competitive and it's all down to the coach

Entertaining game... score line didn't really reflect dogs effort. Worth watching for Jacksons one on ones, the hit on Glenn near the end of game was ridiculous! In regards to commentary- someone needs to dictate terms to Lewis and provide him with with only one option!
