Brumbies lose duo for 2018 season

By News / Wire

Brumbies openside flanker Chris Alcock and Argentine halfback Tomas Cubelli are leaving the Super Rugby side, both heading overseas.

Alcock, one the Brumbies’ best forwards this season, has signed with Japanese club Kamaishi Seawaves.

Argentina Test halfback Cubelli will return to South America to play for the Buenos Aires-based Jaguares in Super Rugby.

Cubelli, who played 58 Tests for the Pumas, played only 18 games in two seasons in Canberra.

“The Brumbies are a very special organisation and I feel privileged to have been able to play for such a great team,” Cubelli said.

The 28-year-old Cubelli missed the bulk of the 2017 season through injury, paving the way for youngster Joe Powell to step up in his absence.

Powell, who went on to earn a Wallabies cap, started in the Brumbies’ quarter-final loss to the Hurricanes last month, with Cubelli on the bench.

The departure of Alcock, who joined the Brumbies this season from the Western Force, is offset by the return of champion flanker David Pocock to Canberra after his rugby sabbatical.

Oh look, the paid shill from RugbyWA has found an opportunity to bring Michael Hooper into the equation and stick the knife in. If this clown had his way RugbyWA would be running rugby in the country, cause they're doing SUCH a great job out West.

The 7 the Force poached from the Waratahs originally RugbyWA need to educate their paid shills a bit better

Well, 12 players are (currently) listed as moving on here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2017%E2%80%9318_Super_Rugby_transfers#Brumbies Of course, Wikipedia isn't always the most trustworthy source ;)

I wouldn't have picked Hardwick over Alcock at the start of the season but I definitely think Hardwick had the better season. I don't think Hardwick has peaked yet so if all other things stay the same I think he may be the WB starting 7 in 2019. If not then certainly for the next 5 years after.

Ah thanks Mark. A handy player in his own right who deserves a bit more opportunity than he's had. We've no shortage of talented young scrum halves.

Amidst all these departures, Brumbies supporters are sorry to see Jarrad Butler, Jordan Smiler, Scott Fardy and Chris Alcock leave the club: they are all good men and good players. It is well known that in March 2011 Fardy was playing at the Kamaishi Seawaves with former All Black Pita Alatini, Aussie Peter Miller and a bunch of Pacific Island and Japanese guys when the Great East Japan earthquake (Magnitude 9.1) struck, and despite the terrible damage to his town from the associated tsunam,i, he and the islander players opted to stay and help with the relief effort. The other players had families and had to leave. It was a courageous and generous gesture by Fardy and his fellow players, a measure of the men themselves. Fardy and Butler join Irish Pro 12 clubs Lienster and Connacht respectively, while Smiler is going to Japan Top League champions Suntory. All good moves for their futures and while sorry to see them go, we wish them well. But it is great that Chris Alcock will play for Fardy's old club the Seawaves, one of Japan's oldest rugby clubs which arguably produced Japan's greatest player in 80!s fly-half Yuji Matsuo, but has been struggling since the tsunami. I hope he can help them rise to the top of their division and secure a place in the Top League. Good luck Chris!.

So the point being that clearly he wasn't a pure West Australian? Mate, you're living in an immigrant based country, let's not get all complainy about players moving around, eh?

I suspect that Jake White would prefer someone like Hardwick or Gill to Hooper. I could be wrong, however.

Hardwick has upside and Alcock a few years left. If someone like Jake White took over from Cheika it would be an interesting call.

Do you think Hardwick is better than Alcock is? I would suggest possibly, but probably not. Second question, do you think Hardwick will be better than Alocock and Hooper by the end of next year?

Hardwick is probably the one Hooper should really be worried about. Hooper is Cheika's pet and unlikely to not be selected under the current coach. However the next one may not be as kind to him. Hardwick is still developing but as the Forces first choice 7 next season will do so quickly.

Pocock was born in Zimbabwe, only spent a few years at school in Queensland then played all of his Senior Rugby at UWA and the Force.

Interesting to hear Roos has been let go. With Cubelli departing also that would seem to leave them thin in the scrumhalf department. They must be banking on picking up the likes of Stirzaker, Meehan, Louwrens and/or Ruru.

Was ok for Pocock too (and so much more). It is the ARU's aim to have as many players in the NRC as possible, and rightfully so. Not really in the interest of Australian Rugby to have players scooting off to Japan every summer. Especially if they aren't a high value player where the occasional Japan concession is a means in which to keep them from heading off to Europe. Toua is not in the same league as the players who have being afforded those concessions. If he's keen on playing for the brumbies he should be getting stuck into the NRC and pre season and aiming to lock down a starting position with them
