Historians make breakthrough discovery - coach criticising ref despite winning

By Dane Eldridge / Expert

In a breakthrough for evolutionary science, historians have unearthed records of a coach criticising the referee after winning.

Believed to be the first and only of its kind, the artefact was stumbled upon as investigators trawled archives for mankind’s last legal play-the-ball.

The stunning discovery is timely as the finals race gets desperate, with coaches now in the process of smearing refs while accepting full responsibility for losing.

As seen recently, Michael Maguire, Paul McGregor and long-time recidivist Ricky Stuart have all frantically deployed the tactic in search of rebound penalty counts.

However, uncovering evidence of a grumpy winner now proves all coaches aren’t just sore losers, they can be irrational a-holes when they win too.

While still being forensically determined, the evidence is believed to be dated from the late 1800s and refers to Cameron Smith’s undue influence.

The surly coach was slamming the referee’s weakness to control the match despite his side earning an unremarkable 22-12 victory in a competition marking the industrial revolution.

He was also reportedly peeved officials didn’t sin-bin an offender for repeated infringements on their own line, rather than allow his team to score a try.

He then ferociously called upon the league to appoint an on-field assistant, and even suggested the idea of reviewing contentious decisions with sketch artistry.

The coach’s identity remains unknown, but he was believed to be in his mid-40s, a mentor of a suburban-based side, and disoriented.

Following the outburst, he was reportedly fined two head of livestock by the game’s governing body, and then a month’s hard labour by the coaches association for breaking protocol.

After being examined for accuracy and booze, the artefact will be donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Here it will sit alongside other historical refereeing relics like TNT shirts and self-confidence.

If ever the need for the Bunker was Friday nights First try score by Melbourne, the expert commentators and my magic eye and the on field Ref,could not tell that it was a try ,but when replayed it sure was,and the tries that some of these wingers are scoring with feet hanging over the sideline great to see but hard to verify the bunker is there. retty sure the replay showed that Coote touched the ball forward into the Storm player, before it went to Morgan. Strange the ref didn't at least let the try get scored and then refer it, but we whinge when refs don't have the courage to make a call, then we whinge when they do lol. As for the refs, I actually thought the Cowboys were getting the better of the calls. The amount of times the Storm were penalised, or called out of the play, for being off side was phenomenal. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they weren't warranted, but Melbourne always play like that, and it just seems for once, the refs policed it... Be thankful Green, most other sides don't get that. As for the refs and calls that I didn't agree with, well they went against Melbourne. First and foremost was the Knock on by the Cowboy winger, and Morgan being allowed to "clean up the ball," even though he was at least 10m in front. Why was that not a penalty. Secondly, well the ref explained it, but I still don't see why it didn't count, was the Melbourne winger being held back /tackled, and he still went on to score. I always thought that any professional foul, had 3 outcomes. Either penalty try if player is stopped from scoring. 10 minutes in the bin if the refs could not be sure a try would have been scored... Or if a try is still scored, it becomes an 8 point try. The ref clearly tells the Cowboys had no try been scored, he would have ruled a penalty at try. This means the conversion is taken in front. Therefore, Melbourne would have received more of an advantage had they not scored, and that is plain ridiculous. Surely if a ref was of the opinion that it would have been a penalty try, well that had to be a perfect candidate for an 8 point try.

It's odd that people would expect anything else; he makes a significant income from a desirable job in a highly competitive field.

Thanks Nat. That's great. Good for Walters and to do it in his first Queensland game is outstanding. There's a lot of coaches with more experience who could take a leaf out of his book.

Hello Dane, Thank you Dane. Your colleague, Tim Gore, has just delivered a Rugby League version of War and Peace on the Men From Youi. I understand that Tim majored in history and it may be prudent to call on his learned scholarship in the search for the Golden Boomerang of Whistledom. Dane, I implore you to have an Ancestry DNA test. You can bet Denmark to a Dollar that you are related to Charlie Darwin or Joe Banks (Jimmy Cook's mate). You titillate our expectations by a casual reference to evolutionary science and yet with every article we see how the Eldridge discipline is an evolution in itself on understanding the GGoA.

Forget a winning coach criticising refs, it'd be nice to just hear one say "yeah, we got a bit lucky on that call. I'll remember that next time one goes against us."
