It was the most financially successful fight in boxing history. Mayweather came out of retirement (for the second time) to fight McGregor, the face of the UFC and an athlete 11 years his junior.
As anticipated as this fight was, there was always an undertone of expectation. If Floyd didn’t win, what does that mean? Can there be more cross-over fighters? Or is Conor just that special of an athlete that he can jump sports at the elite level? The answer to all those questions is no.
Tonight we saw the finish on a very smart and amazing career. Floyd’s resume is nothing short of amazing, and although tonight had all the makings of a Rocky story with the 0-0 UFC figurehead taking on the two-decade belt holder, we saw why Floyd calls himself The Best Ever, TBE.
McGregor brought potential power, awkward movement and a mindset a lot of boxers can’t reproduce but in the end those attributes don’t make an amazing boxer. Mayweather’s speed, timing and tactical potshots were enough to hold McGregor at bay, so much so that he couldn’t really show off his perceived strengths.
It happened against Pacquaio and it happened tonight against McGregor. Mayweather put on a display that was nothing short of a masterclass in the sweet science rendering his opponent ineffective. Floyd lived up to his word about walking McGregor down to knock him out and Conor didn’t live up to his word about knocking Mayweather out in two to four rounds.
Although the first two rounds showed potential for McGregor, Mayweather brought back a former version of himself, a KO master. He walked McGregor down with complete disregard for his power, ate everything he had to offer and then finished him off in the tenth round when the ref stepped in to save Conor.
The crowd didn’t support Floyd, but they appreciated his sportsmanship when he congratulated Conor at the end.
The question now is, will McGregor go back to the UFC to earn smaller money or will he try and stay in boxing for a possibly a few more lucrative paydays?
Tonight we saw a 40-year-old master of the sport teach a master of a different sport why he is TBE.

Connor was a suitcase, that is, Mayweather carried him the entire fight. The fight was never 'close', and, WTF is wobbly from fatigue even supposed to mean? Oh, excuse me I am so tired I can't even defend myself anymore and am about to be knocked senseless as a result. All that was proved is Connor was delusional and MMA fans have absolutely no concept of fighting, let alone boxing. Not surprising, since most fans have never been in a ring of any shape...lol

Thanks Eddie...Unfortunately, you admitted on another article that you didn't even watch the fight. Kind of strange that for someone who clearly doesn't have an interest in boxing or MMA and didn't watch the event itself, you're spending your Sunday afternoon posting about how bad it was.

A man at 40,2 years retired and below his best against a young upstart who knew what he was up for but couldn't last the distance. The bigger your mouth the harder you fall. 30 million makes up for loss of face. I think McGegor should retire. Why go back to UFC to earn peanuts? As a boxer he would only be a journeyman. If he decides to stay in UFC his opponents will respect him less. All talk no action.

So much this me too. Mayweather is a defensive and tactical boxer, who's been retired for two years and still McGregor was really lucky he didn't get seriously hurt. The winner for me was the ref.

He's a showman and made the promoters a lot of money. I guess his next step will be Hollywood or politics - which is practically the same.

Competitive?? Wow. I think the old man could of taken him out a fair bit earlier than 10. GGG and Alverez 'now have some work to do'. What a bizarre statement. I think as part of the anti Mayweather brigade (and believe me, I'm not Floyd cheerleader) I think your writing on emotion.

I think the lot of you are being overly critical. That was a competitive fight and while not a the best fight ever it was streets ahead of Mayweather v Pacquiao and that was a workd title unification bout. Although im not happy about yhe result win Mayweather winning, the ref made the right call as McGregor was shot for about three rounds beforehand. McGregor took it to Mayweather and you had a sniff of a Mcgregor victory and he gassed to early and mayweather took advantage. Anyone that thinks Mayweather wa toyjng with McGregor is an idiot, McGregor had him confused for a good five rounds with his stance and counter punches GGG v Canelo now have some work to do.

If you the best ever would be in such a close fight after 10 rounds it just shows how poor a sport boxing is. Conor was wobbly from fatigue if you watch the slow mo replay mayweather was missing 2 out of three punches. Conor just proved boxing is a joke and his conditioning is very poor. The only loser tonight was boxing

no way mcgregor stays in boxing - he wouldn't get near the top twenty or even fifty. He earns a fortune, thanks his lucky stars, and goes back to a sport he is supreme at.

Federer showed at the Australian Open and Wimbledon that an old Champion past his prime can summon up sufficient mental strength to first outlast someone younger by a few years, much stronger and much fitter and then second to produce a sublime display of grasscourt prowess to humiliate someone 10+ years younger, faster and fitter. This "boxing" exhibition was nothing like Wimbledon 2017.

When two athletes from different sports come together? The fans bought into it enough for it to be the biggest combat sport event ever. It is what it is
