Koch puts Power players on notice

By News / Wire

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch has put his AFL club’s players on notice – play for premierships or play somewhere else.

The Power chairman spoke of his blunt warning at a supporters’ function after the Power’s heartbreaking extra-time elimination final loss to West Coast at Adelaide Oval.

Koch addressed the players immediately after Saturday night’s game and told them the club remained committed to ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.

“But while we make that commitment they’ve got to make a commitment to us,” Koch said.

“They’ve got to make a commitment to play to instructions, to play with composure.

“And we don’t want players who are living their dream just by playing AFL footy.

“We want players who want to win a premiership.

“If they’re not prepared; if they’re just playing for us because they love to play AFL, they’re not players that we want.

“If they’re not prepared to win a premiership for this club, we basically don’t want them. Let us know and we’ll trade them.

“It’s not a one-off, it’s not a one-out and they’ve got to make the big moments count.”

Koch told the audience the team was gutted by the outcome of the match that was decided after the siren by a goal to the Eagles’ Luke Shuey.

But he added that coach Ken Hinkley had no sympathy for them and didn’t hold back in his assessment of the performance punctuated by squandered goal-scoring opportunities.

After the match, Hinkley staunchly defended his decision to go with a youthful team at the expense of more-experienced campaigners – most notably veteran defender Jackson Trengove.

But Koch wasn’t as emphatic in his support of the bold selection move.

“We played a young side tonight; jury’s out whether we should have,” he said.

“But let me tell you, they learnt a bloody lot from tonight.

“Hopefully it counts for something because we are really hurting.”

Yeah I thought exactly the same thing. And to then lecture them for not following the game plan.... come on Kochie I'd be surprised if you even knew the game plan. It's all well and good to pursue excellence but you keep those things behind closed doors.

Mickyo, Reading your responses re the Port attitude, perhaps they need to get into the real world. When a coach is sacked for saying "you can't win every year", assuming this is true, then it says a lot about the un-reality around the club. It's a bit like saying a stayer ought to be able to sprint a 3200m Melbourne Cup from go to whoa & win. Won't ever happen. Yeah sure, we should be striving to win every year. But we all know it isn't going to happen. You strike when you have the cattle. Teams wax & wane over time. it's called life. Anyway, Koch's comments might have been warranted had Port been thrashed by 10 goals. But that's not how it happened. The Power were glorious in defeat.

All the players looked gutted enough to me. Don't need a trumped up celebrity to bag them out. So much for "never tear us apart" When the president is doing that exact thing.

So Kochy if you think players don't play for premierships well you're more stupid than I thought. Leave commentary to those who know mate, go back to your morning shows as you have no football credibility

Unfortunately Koschy has become another Mr Ed....presidents should stay out of many onfield and off field reterict.....i think these sorts of presidents should be put on notice not the players...Port should stick with Kenny Hinkley he has got them to fifth and 2 seconds away from progress...thats a pass .. but koschy should either be put on notice for those comments or go himself

Boak is 30 next year and hasn't played consistent top level footy for 2 years. All he is worth is the complimentary pick like eagles gave the hawks. Nobody will trade for him.

Wingard may have some currency but not at Adelaide (they have plenty of midfielders that can flash in to assist Crouch, Crouch and Sloan and a pretty reasonable forward line) and, to re-emphasise the point I was making, not for 2 first round picks at any club. Port would be better placed to cut some of the spuds and rebuild (IMHO).

Kochie has a lot of cheek blasting the players publicly as a Board member. In other sports around the world teams are generally privately owned. I don't have a problem with a team owner blasting players since the team owner is paying the wages. Kochie is just a mouthpiece who leveraged is position as morning TV celebrity into being a Board member of Port Adelaide despite no football industry experience.

I think wingard in the right team could offer a huge amount. Imagine him in the Carlton midfield or the collingwood midfield. Heck, if there was not the animosity between the crows and port, he would be a great fit in the crows midfield. The point is that guys like him do have good currency, but to do the reboot that the club needs to help it make the step from mid range team that struggles against the better teams and one that challenges the better teams it may need them to selectively trade out one or two guys like that to secure the extra draft picks or to trade in players that could really help them. Look as a crows supporter, I hope nothing changes and they stay middling, but in reality they can improve but need to be bold in doing so

Wow. With a list full of value like that how doesn'tg Port finish higher? Not sure you could expect 2 First Round Picks for Wingard (a player you describe as being "inconsistent") and certainly not enough to bid for Kelly. Trengove is a Free Agent currently playing in the 2nds so I suspect his compensation will be lower than 2nd Round as well. Port reportedly put 13 players on the trade table last year and failed to get any legitimate approaches which reflects the poor list management with some players such as Hartlett and Lobbe which have large and long contracts that mean it is nonsensical for them to move anywhere. It is time for change at Port but it is a rebuild that is needed not a gee up. The coach must be looked at soon as well (if not this year then next year). May be best to let him go to GC now and take on Stewie Dew or Nathan Basset?

So is Kochie making a public appeal to identify the players? Can't he draw up his own hit list? Tradition is important to club stalwarts and fans but is pretty useless in an 18 team comp with a draft system. Not sure he comprehends the football economy.

Intuitively I'd think the players would be a bit annoyed about it too, but Koch has done this sort of thing before and it doesn't seem to have any impact. He might just have a better understanding of what people at his club respond to than we do.

The only people Koch should be commenting on is the coach and the support staff, it’s not his job to comment on players. Second guessing the coach and saying they shouldn’t have played youth is gutless and weak, if they’d won the game he’d be rabbiting on about what a good experience it was for them etc The fact Port think they can still realistically aspire to be an enduringly great club a la Sydney or Geelong now they’re on the big stage and not just Lords of Alberton is indicative of – what’s the phrase – “born to rule”?

How could a club like port Adelaide have a buffoon like him involved with the club. Does more harm to culture and players confidence after trying their guts out. Some will gladly leave and why would you want to go their to cop that sort of crap.

A know-all bag of wind. Full of bluff and bluster! Why would anyone take this goose seriously? Should keep these things in-house and even then could be dealt with more respectably.

TomC - I think comments like that actually do harm. They are the sort of comments you might make if you had just been flogged by 10 goals - not when you have lost a game after the siren in extra time! Anyone that thinks the players weren't giving the all is just plain ignorant or stupid - or maybe a combination of both. I also don't think its Kochy position to be making those sort of comments - let Hinkley be the one to publicly critique the players effort and skills execution.

Possibly he says one thing externally and another internally to try and keep both sets of stakeholders happy. Whether or not everything is going perfectly for Port they seem to do pretty well retaining, attracting and developing players under the current regime, so I don't know if there's any particular reason to think Koch does any harm when he says this sort of thing.

It certainly creates an air of do or die ruthlessness but also maybe a bit of sniping and paranoia one would expect. Wonder how long Buckley would have lasted as Port coach ?. They certainly have a fantastic record Port at SANFL level and it is good to see what is a non Melbourne suburban club do well, FWIW I have always felt that a few WAFL clubs could have done the same thing, East Freo and West Perth could and probably in hindsight should be in the national comp.
