Cheika deserved to have the rule book thrown at him after the England Test

By Wally James / Roar Guru

Michael Cheika will face no disciplinary action for his “f***ing cheats” comment during the English Test.

The official statement merely gave the Aussie coach a warning, stating, “The Disciplinary Officer has, however, urged Mr Cheika to be aware of the risks during matches when he knows he will be being filmed and potentially broadcast and where possible to moderate his conduct and language accordingly.”

In 2013, Dylan Hartley called Wayne Barnes an “f***ing cheat” and received an 11-week ban. As a result, he missed certain selection in the then-upcoming Lions tour.

Such disciplinary inconsistencies are appalling.

Both comments bring the game into disrepute and are abusive of game officials. Any allegation of cheating is against the spirit of the game. Yet, a player is treated differently to a coach.

Not only that, both Hartley and Cheika have form when it comes to disregarding the spirit of the game.

Cheika smashed the glass in a coaches box and abused a cameraman (twice). Hartley’s history was also not for the abuse of match officials.

It casts the inconsistent decisions of the judiciary into even greater contrast.

The Code of Conduct, which applies to coaches, and the Laws of the Game, which apply to players, prohibit such conduct. It does not create a defence in the case of a poor performance by a referee.

I am impressed with the way Cheika and his team have improved the physicality and play of the Wallabies. Unfortunately, he has developed into a bit of a whinger after defeats. That in itself is an unattractive trait. Calling referees cheats should be a punishable trait.

Whatever disciplinary body made the decision last week has let rugby down, and Rugby Australia should discipline their head coach.

I do not want to be represented by a person who conducts himself such a fashion.

This wasn't a first either. On top of recidivist ref abuse and inappropriate interference of the ref at 1/2 time how does this clown not spend most of his time on the bench.

It seems to me that Chieka comes across as a fairly crass sort of individual. He may be a successful business person and he might be a good coach (something that I am not convinced) but bad language used in the public arena is not what I want from a head coach of the national team. I doubt that you would have Wayne Bennett swearing in public or Mal Meninga. They seem to have sense of responsibility to behave while in the public eye. I know that in modern times swearing and cursing is common place even amongst women and men, however to me it is and has always been if you cannot control your language in certain situations you lack discipline and a certain amount of intelligence. Surely an educated person of Cheika's standing could think of an alternative to using bad language in public. The Cheating accusation is beyond the pale, that to me is worse than his lack of courtesy and etiquette in using bad language in public

That's a fair point Charlie. It's one of the things I cherish about the game as well, the core values. But I can still empathise with the situation, and can forgive transgressions from time to time. Someone said it on another forum somewhere, who the hell would want to be a coach aye. Or a referee for that matter!

John i think it's even more important to keep your cool when the chips are down. I grew up playing RL in Qld country and started playing RU in high school. I love both games but the older I got the more I felt RU offered more in the way of overall sportsmanship, the "Rugby Ethos" if you like. Cheika is derelict in his responsibility to the game and the ARU are complicit for not reigning him in. I guess we have different expectations and that's ok.

Not the same situation though aye Charlie. It'd be bizarre if Hansen was mouthing off on a 90+% winning average. What's he got to be cross about ya know?

In a previous article I rudely eluded to Cheika's behaviour being consistent with that of a Dh'd. I then followed it up with another coarse remark that he was a recidivist mo' Ron. Following that I was rightly admonished by a prolific roar contributor for displaying the same reprehensible behaviour repeatedly seen from the coach of the Australian national rugby team. Suitably chastened and fearing my the wrath of my elderly mother (I foolishly post under my real name) should she be alerted to my transgression, I pledged to repent. I also asked Geoff Parkes in his recent "wrap" where he cautioned against overreaction, if Cheika-like behaviour by the All Blacks coach would be tolerated in NZ. Geoff replied in the negative and moaman left no doubt to his feelings. Apparently it's ok if a Dh'd coaches Wallabies but not the AB's. See it's not easy to change.........although unlike the Wallabies coach the only person I risk shaming is myself.

The Beale response was just weird. I saw it in real time and thought it was a slap out. Then when I saw Beale's reaction I waited for the replay as I assumed, based on his vehemence, that he was trying to 'rake it in'. The replay obviously shows there was never the remotest attempt to 'rake it in'. What was he thinking? He must know these incidents are replayed half a dozen times. It's difficult to escape the conclusion that Cheika's antics are helping to shape the players' behaviour. If your coach is constantly screaming that the team's hard done by with the implication of 'cheating' the tendency must be to not take ownership for mistakes and poor play. It's so counterproductive as to be laughable now.

Give it a break Harry. Maybe you should focus on the clear and evident failings of Coetzee before trying to stir something out of nothing with Australia's coach.

It's got to be the dumbest move in the book. Ref: "Yellow card for you my boy, we won't be having that" Beale: "But I was trying to rake it in" Ref: "Oh you were? Sorry I didn't realise - no yellow card, also here is a lolly"

One of the real hallmarks of Wallaby sides the past few decades has been their on field discipline. I can clearly recall past frustrations seeing the Bok players constantly losing their heads left , right and centre while the Aussies remained infuriatingly cool and in control. This has gone rapidly downhill under MC's leadership. Just wondering out loud whether there is a direct correlation between his ...lets call it impetuous behaviour and a decline in that discipline. Usually discipline is not just a team issue but each and every individual taking personal responsibility . Cheika seems to be in short supply accepting his own shortcomings.

Cheika is the reason Beale argued with the Ref - zero respect. The fish rots from the head, so off with Chieka's.
