Samu cleared to play for Wallabies

By News / Wire

Crusaders flanker Peter Samu has been cleared to play for the Wallabies after Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby reached an agreement.

Samu will join the Australian squad assembling in Brisbane on Sunday ahead of the three-Test series against Ireland starting in Brisbane on Saturday.

Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle said Melbourne-born Samu had been released for a potential Test debut after what she described as “robust but fair” discussions with New Zealand Rugby.

Samu became eligible for the Wallabies after signing a deal to return home and play for the Brumbies in Super Rugby next season.

Castle did not reveal whether RA had paid to get the 26-year-old freed after NZR reportedly sought compensation for his New Zealand provincial side Tasman, who he was also contracted to.

Great, Now Samu can sit in the stands, wearing a suit watching the game instead of playing for Tasman.

Scotland do it all the time, 4 if you include the hooker. Wallabies Play Dual 12's. Hoops can't claim to be a 7 if He can't move bodies

Agree TWAS. There is no certainty that clause 38 in regulation 9 overrules all other directions and Laws regarding player availability during Test windows. At the end of the day, World Rugby are the ones who interpreted and execute their Laws, not NZR and their PR-department. And that is why it is so important to understand how World Rugby operates. The fact remains, there have been two cases where NZR have gone from a tough stance to actually say they give their "blessing". And there has not been a whisper that any money has changed hands.

You have been very active on all comment threads regarding this issue. Have you somehow missed my earlier comments? I have been pretty clear about how World Rugby operates.

a) RA would’ve released a statement saying so, they wouldn’t let up an opportunity to one up NZ. I am certainly not sure about that. As mentioned several times, RA and NZR have no interest in a public beef. How come you keep overlooking that? You’re delirious if you think that the NZRU haven’t already discussed with the higher powers their position on dual eligibility. Well, all comments from World Rugby during the Brad Shields saga said something very different to what NZR is saying. And NZR has not said zip about that they have cleared this with World Rugby (if they had I am pretty sure they would go public with that during the circumstances).

But I'd be willing to bet that the purpose of that regulation is to give that nation first opportunity on the player, not to warehouse them at provincial level and prevent others from selecting them.

If the NZRU were in the wrong: a) RA would've released a statement saying so, they wouldn't let up an opportunity to one up NZ. b) Samu would still be playing out his Tasman contract and being paid by Tasman but would be in Aussie the whole time with the Wallabies (RA don't have to pay him outside of match fees until his contract ends) I have spoken to someone in the know about this, my line of work brings me close with the local Super franchise and they've been briefed about this. I do tend to lean towards the NZRU and their lawyers who are dealing with this first hand understanding the situation as opposed to someone looking in from the outside such as your self. You're delirious if you think that the NZRU haven't already discussed with the higher powers their position on dual eligibility.

Being a all black is much better financial pull when it comes time to head north for retirement rugby.

Of course, you agree, you have been NZR's unofficial spokesman on this issue all week. I hope they pay you well Kane, hence it is a tough gig to defend the indefensible. Bagdad-Bob would have been proud of your work.

With all respect, I think you should educate yourself a little bit more how World Rugby operates, who is in charge of their internal Law processes, and what they aim to achieve with their laws.

World rugby would have to contravene their own regulations in order to rule against NZR. Clause 38 of Regulation 9 clearly states that in a case of dual eligibility a player can be contracted such that they agree to not be selected by another unions national side. It's all there in black and white.

nope - Pocock cannot jump. or does not jump - or whatever. every 7 in NZ jumps - including Todd and Cane. the point is - they dont have to jump at every lineout. the possibility and the opposition knowledge that they have the ability creates an option for the side and a headache for the other side.
