Wallabies team to play third Test against Ireland announced

By Stirling Coates / Editor

Michael Cheika has revealed the line-up of 23 men who’ll be tasked with seeing Australia claim a 2-1 series victory over Ireland this Saturday at the Sydney Football Stadium.

After naming an unchanged line-up for the second Test in Melbourne, Cheika has elected to make some changes for the decider, but it’s hardly a new-look Wallabies side heading into the do-or-die clash on Saturday.

Lukhan Tui gets his opportunity to start at blindside flanker after being named on the interchange in the first few Tests, with his promotion to the starting line-up pushing David Pocock into a non-preferred No. 8 role.

Caleb Timu, who made his Wallabies debut in the first Test, finds himself without a spot in the side, while much-maligned lock Ned Hanigan comes back into the team via the bench.

Nick Phipps has been named in the starting line-up as the replacement for the injured Will Genia, while Brumbies scrumhalf Joe Powell takes Phipps’ spot on the pine.

It’s quite the return to form for Phipps, who made headlines barely two months ago after being fined $4000 for urinating on a bar during a wild buck’s night.

The incident cost him the captaincy of the Waratahs and seemingly put him on the outer with national selectors. However, a broken arm suffered by Genia means the 29-year-old has a chance to help Australia claim victory in his first Test on home soil in nearly two years.

The Wallabies started the series strongly with an 18-14 win over Ireland in Brisbane, before Ireland leveled the series with a 26-21 triumph in Melbourne.

Roar expert Nick Bishop blamed poor discipline and decision making in the second Test loss, with the vastly improved Irish entering the deciding match as slight favourites.

The third and final match of the series kicks off at 8pm this Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

Robertson and Pocock won that scrum. Irish prop against Robertson took a step straight backawards due to the pressure from Robertson. Tupou drove nicely into the hooker once there was pressure from the other side and it started to turn.

I cannot speculate on how many kiwi roar contributors have played the game. Doesn't matter much. I played the game for yonks but the game I played at the level I played in the era I played has not got a lot in common with test match rugby in 2018. Having said that you would swear blind that some posters on here are on the keyboard while in the dressing room after the match accepting the accolades for a job well done.

Wells is a good player but could do with some more size to compete at internationals.

Surely in all of Australia there has to be another half back. I thought Australia had a genuine chance however now that Phipps is playing I doubt they can win. I think Australia's biggest issue is 9 and 10. Foley is ok and well Phipps is very ordinary. Australia can get the trys so let's hope Ireland stick to penalty goals and we could be in for a win.

If the Wallabies could manage that win and win handsomely on a regular basis I doubt their would be a problem with comments from their supporters.

Yeah, because you are Kiwis who have played rugby so you are entitled to adopt a smug, superior attitude and absolutely slam any Australian player you don’t rate. Nice.

Or in Quades case, how well he has performed, with the best win/loss record or any current player against the ABs. A record which would likely have been even better if Cheika had recognised that he was the best 5/8 in the Wallabies the last few tests he was selected in.

I think we can win the World Cup. That’s my expectation even cup. We know how to play knockout football. Always have and always will. Plus, we’ll always have our best team in each tournament—unlike between World Cups where NZ depth is a bridge too far.

And while Hanigan is not ready test football, nor is Kerevi—yet he’s play in the pivotal defensive position in the backline. Bloody disgrace. And still no one criticizes his 19 or 20 test where he has done nothing for the country other than lose games—and we have one of the best 13s in TK not in the 23.

Accepted John R, and my comments are not against the man himself. I am against what he delivers. I have been told he is a good guy and it is not his fault he is selected. And this angers me more than ever, when others are available in that position; RHP and Philp. Not saying they are better but doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is crazy. A smart man said something along those lines, but it was not me!! Maybe they have fallen along the way. Do not know. Cheers

Funny how the memory plays tricks. I thought it was a lot too. But it was really just two incidents in first half one of which led to try being scored. 5.51. Henshaw advances, tracks his man, tackles and wins penalty 14.56 Earls rushes up and misses tackle on Beale but tracks back and makes another tackle. 19.10 Henshaw shoots up and slips off tackle on Beale who passes. Stockdale makes try saver tackle. 33.20 Henshaw shoots up and misses Beale who passes and try eventually scored. 37.10 Henshaw shoots and forces Foley to one hand bat pass which goes to ground and Beale is tackled by Larmour 41.10 Henshaw shoots, makes tackle and ruck formed. 54.10 Henshaw cleans up ball and breaks forward and wins penalty from ensuing tackle for Ireland to take lead 9-8.

Yeah no worries cuzz - like I said I had taken you at your word. I’ll still do some sniffing around because I am fascinated no end by this stuff. That’s crazy though - can’t imagine ever willingly driving a player away like that aye.

I don't know look at ire stats in 6 natio ns. The same possession etc but with less penalties. It should be a cracker. Ire have shown they can hold onto the ball. Can Aus defend as well three games in a row? If not Aus in trouble. With nh ref Aus will be carded off the field if they play like second match But bigger picture for both teams is 'rwc. Schmidt will have used every player on tour which says a lot for the Irish depth especially with so many good players at home such as sob jvdf farrell best etc. What is the aus depth like approaching rwc. It's a hard group and Wales really improving. Just looks like Schmidt has ire further along than cheiks. I am open to correction but it seems that way. Also I think ire will score more tries their possession merits. If they finish the line breaks Aus are in trouble. But regardless of who wins it's been a great series with best to come I think

Well good luck Dennis, it should be a cracker. I think we will see a much more open game tomorrow as Australia looking to exploit the Ireland narrow defence but if so that will most likely give Ireland more opportunity to run in space as well. With regard to controlling the ball I think the last game was as good as Ireland gets and Australia poor, think Ireland will kick more this game and can't see Australia being so poor in retaining possession tomorrow. I do hope we are more creative tomorrow and get more ball.

Tip-tackling Koroibete gave the Irish the opportunity to score 13 points last week. He deserves to be dropped for a week. The other idiots who intentionally knocked the ball down deserve punishment as well. Super rugby refs would have sent more wallabies to the bin.

A bit controversial but I reckon our forwards will go better with the ball this weekend with Phipps starting. On his day he provides quicker ball than Genia as he's less prone to taking a step backward before passing, he's got a strong pass and his natural motion is to go forward and hence the forwards get the ball closer to the gain line. Due to his forward motion and taking the ball to the line at times he's more likely to spot gaps and take them on. I hope he puts in a strong, acurate performance and his knockers have a look at his passing motion at rucks this weekend compared to some of the other options we have including Genia. This is why he's still the preferred reserve half in my opinion.
