Aaron Woods released by Bulldogs; joins Sharks immediately

By Matt Encarnacion / Wire

Aaron Woods has reportedly been released by Canterbury to make a mid-season switch to Cronulla on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Woods has long been linked to a move from the Bulldogs as the club attempts to fix a salary cap laden with heavily back-ended contracts.

Multiple reports on Tuesday said Woods would immediately link with the Sharks and is a chance to play in Friday’s NRL match against Auckland.

It’s a coup for Shane Flanagan’s side in their hunt for finals football and could help revive the career of Woods, who was overlooked for Brad Fittler’s series-winning NSW State of Origin team.

For the Bulldogs it will further ease pressure on a salary cap laden with heavily back-ended contracts a week after the departure of Moses Mbye to the Wests Tigers started the clean-up.

Bulldogs chief executive Andrew Hill said the “difficult decision” to let Woods go mid-season was a joint one made by both parties.

“What it does allow is for Aaron to join his new club before the upcoming deadline and for the Bulldogs to be able to start to plan for the future with additional cap space,” Hill said in a statement.

“It has been well documented that we have had very little flexibility with our cap going forward and this will now allow us to look to the future with increased flexibility around our options.

“We wish Aaron all the very best for the future.”

Woods is expected to be available for Cronulla’s away clash with the Warriors on Friday night, with the team departing for New Zealand on Wednesday.

It’s been a tumultuous year for the ex-Wests Tigers skipper, who had a run of 14 consecutive State of Origin appearances snapped when he was not selected for game one.

Rumours have persisted throughout the season that Woods has been looking to back out of the four-year deal he signed after a messy divorce with his former club – with the Sharks often named as the favourites to land the 27-year-old.

Woods’ career highlights include featuring in all three games of New South Wales’ drought-breaking Origin victory in 2014, as well as playing for Australia in their 2016 Four Nations and 2017 World Cup triumphs.

At club level, however, the prop has only played two finals matches in his career – both of them coming off the bench at the end of his debut season in 2011.

Wow! The Dogs are having their worst season in a decade. The Tigers are having one of their better seasons and they’re a slightly better non top 8 side than the Bulldogs...and you’re crowing as if it’s some sort of achievement. I know the standards are low in Tigers town (wherever that is...) but that’s next level.

Good comment... I don’t mind Mbye being let go. He’s talented but he hasn’t really found his feet yet. He’s solid but not much more. He’s struggled in the halves for years and while he was exciting in the first four or so games this year, he hasn’t done much since getting knocked out against Souths. I’d prefer they found someone else at fullback than Hoppa though. Are the Dogs paying for Suli? I heard they’d picked him up for the same amount he was on at the Tigers but it was heavily dependent on his behaviour and favourable to the Bulldogs in terms of his dismissal. The dogs attack has changed slightly. They’ve scrapped the second man out the back plays they were so bad at but they still don’t have anyone taking the ball to the line and creating any doubt in the defences mind. It’s so bland. Dogs have named Montoya in the centres. Crikey. I’ll be watching this game through my fingers.

It feels like there is some dirty dark secret here because of all the players let go and as many pointed out before me, where is all the money at? Jackson, Klemmer, Tolman, Hoppa? this is very hard to swallow at this point of time and I feel absolutely shattered for the Morris boys who don't deserve any of this. Regardless of all the crap going on they have turned up every game and to be basically told you're gone at the end of the season, what a way to be treated....... Then they let Mbye go the best player in our spine but my issue is they are still paying part of his contract as well as many others. So how much money do they actually have free now? By the way the club is carrying on and by the fact they also let Woods go now makes me wonder who are they going to sign because clearly they don't have enough money to go all out on anyway which also makes me spew at the fact that they took Suli off the Tigers at the start of the year and are paying for him as well..... Like how dumb can the club be? They resigned Lichaa the flop, pay over 300k for a lazy bum in Suli (one spent time in reserves and the other has gone). To me they should of let Woods go if needed be but kept Mbye on and just blooded as many juniors as they could because the Dogs are stuffed anyway for the next couple years anyway..... Really sad...... I feel sorry for any club that signs Des now or takes Ray Dib on and what will become of Australian Rugby? Just as well the Swans are going good so I have something to cheer about! PS is it just me or does the Dogs attack look the same as last year IE what's new about the Dogs attack? I see the same plays I saw under Des...

Haha at least the spoon isn't heading our way... Where to start. McQueen was signed by Taylor not Clearly so its unfortunate but oh well. McQueen 400k in reserve it Eastwood 800k (back ended deal) in reserves. I know which one I would choose. We don't owe a cent to Suli when he left so it doesn't effect us. He's still lazy. We needed a half last year and got Lolohea who played alright. Unfortunately this year he's not putting in enough. We are getting Farah back. Rather him 5 times over then Lichaa. Yes we have only one two out of the last nine. Sorry we can't keep up to the standards of the mighty dogs (3-11). Oh well we'll keep on trying anyway haha

Bulldogs SOS to Jackson Hastings? They need something in the halves, they are good getting down to the 20 but inept when they are there, especially now with mbye at the tigers. Poor old bullfrog must be turning in his grave to see how the family club has been run the last couple of years. Keep your chin up JB and the Barry, it’ll turn around, but gee there must be some very average players on some very good coin with all the players that have left in the last 12 months and still no room in the cap-something very dodgy there or they have back ended Morris boys, Eastwood way more than what has been reported!!!

That’s the thing I just don’t understand too. It’s hard to see where all the dollars have gone. Is anyone at the club on big coin? Surely not Foran or Hopoate. Sure the Morris boys were Origin players when they signed their last deals but really- who is on the big bikkies? I can’t even think of anyone they’ve let go (apart from Mbye and Woods) who was on the big $. Stranger and strangerer.

I suspect a few of the older players (Lewis/Gallen) will move on from the Sharks soon which will give him more time on the field. I think signing Woods was as much a statement to Gallen that he won't be playing at the Sharks after his current deals runs out or he will be on a significantly reduced deal if he chooses to stay on. As such Woods' experience will be quite useful if they bring in the younger talent.

The West Tigers who signed Chris McQueen on good money - playing in reserve grade, Reynolds - 4 games, Lolohea 6 games and back in reserves - just brought back the hooker they spent 18 months kicking out of the joint, to start the season announced they would have 5 co-captains, previously signed a kid with no NRL experience to a million contract, then punted him after three games and he is now showing signs of life, and have won what 2 of their last 10 games... Yeah, no anyone would be spewing not to be apart of that...

Don't think so... he was the marquee player at both bulldogs and Tigers (captain as well), being a benchie within a far more formidable team will probably get the best out of him as he has to lift his game to get a mention.

It is an all origin pack in that they have all played origin. Gallen is lucky to play two games on t he trot these days, same has to be said of Lewis, Woods isn't even close to origin standard these days, Prior somehow got a start and proved why he was never ever considered good enough. Graham and Fifita though are origin class for sure. Sharks problem is in the halves, Townsend isn't going to steer them to a premiership, and Moylan, no matter how classy he can be, drifts in and out of games.
