Costly Gaff: Star Eagle suspended for eight weeks

By Josh / Expert

Update:

Andrew Gaff has been suspended for eight weeks for striking Andrew Brayshaw.

This means Gaff will be unavailable to play AFL until at the very earliest, Round 2 of the 2019 AFL season.

However, his return may be delayed even further depending on how many finals matches the West Coast Eagles play.

Preview:

Andrew Gaff of the West Coast Eagles will face the AFL Tribunal tonight, charged with striking Andrew Brayshaw in the Western Derby. Join The Roar for live updates and the Tribunal’s decision when it is made tonight, starting from 5pm AEST.

Gaff looks set to receive a lengthy ban, one which could be enough to prematurely end his participation in the 2018 AFL season.

With only three weeks left of the home-and-away season, it seems virtually certain that Gaff will miss the rest of that – but the big question is whether or not he’ll be eligible to return during finals.

A ban of six weeks would almost certainly rule Gaff out for the rest of the year, barring the unlikely scenario that the Eagles lose a qualifying final but then qualify for the grand final.

A ban of seven weeks or more would make it absolutely certain that Gaff will not play another AFL game in 2018.

Of course, there’s also a strong possibility that – depending on the outcome of the Eagles’ finals campaign – Gaff could cop a ban long enough to delay his start to the 2019 season also.

That may well even be a ban that effects another club, as Gaff is a restricted free agent this year.

It’s widely expected that he will remain with the West Coast Eagles, but still possible he could decide to return home to Victoria with Melbourne and North Melbourne among the sides pursuing his signature.

As for Brayshaw, his season is certainly over as the strike saw him suffer a broken jaw and four displaced teeth. He won’t be able to eat solid food for the next month.

Prediction
Given the circumstances of the incident, I’d say a ban that unambiguously ends Gaff’s season is appropriate – I’d expect a minimum of seven weeks, but could be as high as eight to ten.

Join The Roar for live updates and the Tribunal’s decision when it is made tonight, starting from 5pm AEST.

You're getting all shrill again. Fyfe's was a football clash and the suspension was debated on this site. Criminal? Duh! Your outrage, Mattician, is confected, infantile and tedious.

Gaffy is dangerous and must be stopped. A little known fact is that when the Iraq war started that they were actually looking for weapons of ‘Gaff’ destruction, but when they realised how perilous that search could be they actually toned it down and decided to only look for weapons of ‘Mass’ destruction. That’s why they never found the WOMD, because that was never what they were looking for to begin with!

I had my own teeth have to be pushed back into place, blood pouring from my mouth, arm snapped like a twig, an ambulance trip to the hospital and two bouts of surgery from a traffic accident, and the offending driver who failed to give way didn’t even get a citation from the police. She just claimed poor visibility. That’s the real world for you. If unintended outcomes on the footy field offend you so greatly perhaps you can advise your grandkids to stick to croquet.

In the real world nic, Fyfe, nyhuis would all be charged with assault. If on the street Hawkins laid a dismissive hand on a police officer he would be arrested and charged with a criminal offence. Your outrage is clouding any small ability to actually realise how your real world argument holds nothing and if any incident in the AFL went down the path of criminal charge ALL incidents will no matter how minor would end up subject to the same treatment.

Way off the mark.

Gaff rejects the suggestion he was frustrated by being checked by Brayshaw. He says he only intended to push Brayshaw's chest to get some space momentarily.
Tagging had nothing to do with anything.

I hope the AFL and its umpires take some responsibility for Andrew Gaff's eight-week suspension. Maybe now they will understand what can happpen when star players are continually punched, pushed, elbowed and shoved while off the ball. The unfair treatment handed out to players like Gaff, Fyfe, Ablett, Mitchell etc has gone on for too long and it is no surprise when something like Gaff's hit on his opponent took place. Why are umpires allowing players to be pushed after marking, jostled after scoring and constantly harassed when not in possession of the ball? All these things are an ugly part of the game. If a player doesn't have possession he shouldn't be touched. It's an easy policy to implement and would help eliminate retaliation.

All you have to explain to your grandchiildren is that punching someone is wrong. That will only be a problem for them if they don't respect you.

Your comments have been anything but balanced. They have been shrill and manic. Glad to be an irritant. It's my service to those you annoy.

As his family have stated they do not want it to be anymore than a tribunal issue I will go with their wishes as they're truly amongst the few this is directly affecting. If you're yet to read or see mark brayshaws interview after the the hearing it is worth it.

Like I said over the last few days Pete, mark and his wife would not let this fester into fetid wound and parent and offer counsel to all sons. I'm sure you're are aware that Hamish spent time living with gaff and in Angus's words loves him and as mark brayshaw said us organising the face to face between his brother and gaff. I understand his words on the pod as he is a young man and not yet experienced enough to be able to manage his responses. After his comparison to what Nathan Jones might do if he whacked his brother it was interesting to see Jones response in regards to what may happen if the demons recruit gaff.

To be expected ttf it's an unfortunate reflection on the inability of people not to use events to channel their anger most likely from dissatisfaction of their own excistence. We all agree he deserves suspension, I've said it will be whatever was deemed suitable by the tribunal, what is quite sad is when Mark brayshaws says he believes Gaffs intent was to hit his son in the chest and accepts gaff is remorseful but also express concern for the well being of Andrew and his family the great majority on here want to act like legionnaires and crucify him.

Why would you regurgitate? It actually is astounding that you continually defend Gaff Can't you see its actually a bit trivial that we consider using sandpaper to change the condition of a cricket ball a worse offence than punching someone? As Angus Brayshaw said if thats on the street its assault and Gaff would face criminal charges. One offence is assault which is actually against the law, the other a mild form of cheating which whilst against the spirit of the game doesn't actually break any physical laws.

We're talking one concussion. Not 500 concussions as NFL players have suffered. There's a big chance now that Brayshaw will not be the player he could have been. Months on the sideline now until his face heals, dental reconstructive surgery over the coming years. Gaff's "punishment" is to be sidelined for 8 games of football. Wow. Big punishment. How will he ever get over that?

Dale kickett was 32 and the target of his brain snap was 20, quite the age difference and last time I checked not to many 32 men are being bullied by 20 year olds, if what your implying is he was standing up to the likes of woosh, heady, Lewie etc doing so when they where retired and making a 20 year old the focal point of your aggression is odd. I respect Dale and he is on record many times about his regret over that day and it is quite sad the endearing memory of his career is that moment, Andrew gaff will carry a similar burden so maybe this is the point when the derby and the commentary and imagery that has surrounded it will mature

Don you have below zero ability to be anything but a irritant so get over yourself, if you had the ability to read you would have seen my view has been measured , calling upon those baying for blood to view it with a bit more consideration is something that is beyond you but thankfully is not beyond mark brayshaws. If you find it confusing that my belief that you cannot defend or celebrate acts of violence perpetrated by your own team then make outrageous statements when it happens to your team that is beyond my control.

You dumb, angry grumbler. I've been saying, long before you have, that Mark is correct. Dignity! You have lost it. Grow up and show some class instead of seeming to celebrate the occasion. Your disappointment has dulled your capacity to read. The fact remains...and it is here for all to see...you have been 'regurgitating' rubbish all week. Change your diet.
