GWS confident of keeping Dylan Shiel

By Rob Forsaith / Wire

GWS coach Leon Cameron is at peace with speculation about AFL rivals attempting to poach star Dylan Shiel, noting the club has gone through the process plenty of times before.

Shiel is contracted until the end of the 2019 season but multiple reports suggest Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton are already attempting to recruit him.

“At this time of year there is always speculation on one or two players. You just ignore it,” Cameron told reporters.

“Every year that speculation happens more and more. It probably gains 10 per cent every year.

“There are always going to be challenges to keep players.

“We’ve had our challenges with that but we’ve done a fantastic job keeping players at our footy club.”

Shiel will become a free agent at the end of the 2019 season, at which point he’ll have more power to walk out on the club should he wish to.

The 25-year-old has given no indication he’s unsure about his future, especially when it comes to next season.

“He’s contracted (for 2019). That’s the good thing about it but no doubt people will still talk about it,” Cameron said.

Shiel, among the Giants’ most important players, noted earlier this year he has no interest in requesting a trade.

“Unless the Giants are exploring flicking me at the end of the year, at this stage I’m pretty happy up here and I’m contracted until the end of next year,” Shiel said in July.

“I’m enjoying my time up here and I certainly haven’t looked at any options to leave at the end of this year.”

GWS young gun Josh Kelly’s contract discussions regularly made headline last year but he eventually recommitted, shunning a $10-million offer from North Melbourne.

Collingwood gun Adam Treloar and Western Bulldogs premiership player Tom Boyd are among the Giants’ first-round draft picks to have requested trades in the past.

Training is at Homebush and they can swim in their outdoor heated pool 9 months of the year and travel to the beach out of peak hour in spring and summer

1 million over three years will be his Blues contract- pretty basic but three years is a significant commitment with his mental health issues.

I'd have a crack at fasolo, when he is fit he's quite a damaging player. But it'll have to be on a short term performance driven contract.

Pete we could probably get Rupert Wills as well but that doesn't mean we should. We need to target quality midfielders first and foremost, not 26 year old small forwards with a bad injury record who are unable to break into the AFL side. If we get Fasolo for nothing then so be it but I can't see him changing our fortunes

Pete - there are 5 games over the last 3 years, did Greenwood miss 4 of them or just 2? In which of the 5 games did Dusty get all these cheap back half possessions? The one he kick 3 goals in, the one he kicked 2 goal in or one of the 3 he kicked just the 1 goal in?

You had to be at the game Macca, Dusty got his possessions cheap in the back half chip. Meant very little. Greenwood missed the other two games.

I am hoping he does another package deal special and get Shiel and Setterfield!! If you have a list with plenty of talent which means quality young players are under paid and under played you would be mad to not have a crack, especially when they are top 4 and playing in front of 12k when you are dead last and playing in front of an average of 35k. The mindless chatter will have a go at the blues for taking too many GWS players but they have a go at the blues no matter which way they go so who cares.

Considering Kelly, Shiel, cogniglio, Whitfield, Cameron, Scully, ward and Davis would be on huge dosh not surprising they are feeling cap squeeze. Could sos afford chasing another gws kid Macca? Haha

Reports today the blues and Bombers are heavily interested in getting Will Setterfiled (who the blues bid on back in 2016) despite him still being contracted. Interestingly the article talks about a lack of salary cap space at the Giants causing player retention issues.

over the last 3 years in 5 games Martin has averaged 27.4 possessions and 1.6 goals a game against the Magpies, the only game he got less than 25 touches he kicked 3 goals and in 3 of the 5 games he has had 29 or more. When exactly has Greenwood stifled Martin?

You just want Dusty to run amok when you play them. If Greenwood was there he'd be stifled.

Pete Cott is close to Freo and for me over an hour drive traffic dependant. But if I want to go there I will regardless and I earn alot less than just under a million a year.

Greenwood? Last player the Blues need. Has nothing positive to offer them.

Col - that does seem a very good deal (it would certainly leave the blues in a good spot) and not an unlikely outcome but if GWS said it was pick 1 or nothing I would give up pick 1 in heartbeat.

The point is 6 x 6 most of their week is tied up at their training centre. Training in Sydney's West and getting to a beach is hardly like popping down to Cottesloe for a swim after training. The traffic alone is a nightmare.

Macca, I just think pick 1 in this draft is worth more than what we have seen in previous yeas especially when you have the Crows desperate to get one of either Likosius or Rankine. First thing SOS should explore is whether Shiel is wanting to come to the Blues either this year or next. If he wants to come to the Blues this year and nominates us as his destination then we are in the box seat as far as what GWS can get from us. If we go down the Shiel path then I would be asking the Crows what they are willing to give up for pick 1. I am sure SOS would be asking for their 2 first round picks and the second round one we gave up in the Gibbs deal. As far as points value pick 1 is worth 3000, pick 8 1551 and pick 12 1268 so the 2 picks combined are not the value of 1. I would then offer GWS pick 8 and that 2nd round pick currently 19. If that went down we would still have a first round pick (currently 12). So the end result would be give up pick 1 and 19 and end up with Shiel, pick 12 and hopefully an end of first round priority pick.

If taxi fares force a players decision it's a very weird World we live in, would also be odd if Dylan Shiel lives in Sydney's west Pete

6 x 6, ever taken a Taxi to Sydneys West from the airport? My last one cost me $360 each way - lucky work paid for it and not me - its a nightmare drive. How long does it take them to get from their training centre to a beach?
