Docker shocker! Geelong wipe Fremantle off the map with 133-point slaughter

By Dem Panopoulos / Expert

Geelong obliterated Fremantle by 133 points in one of the worst performances of 2018 by the losing team.

Geelong broke all sorts of records, kicking an astonishing 23 goals in a row after quarter time to put aside a disappointing start to the game.

In terms of positive for Fremantle, Nat Fyfe played and finished with 37 disposals.

This performance almost guarantees Geelong’s spot in the finals, particularly after Port Adelaide’s loss earlier in the day.

The Cats sit inside the top eight with an excellent percentage and face the lowly Gold Coast Suns in the final round of the season.

Most of the home team’s players were good on the day, with Tim Kelly (26 disposals, 3.2), Tom Hawkins (22 disposals, 6.1) and Sam Menegola (27 disposals, six marks, 1.0) the three likely to be involved in the Brownlow votes.

With only one week left in the season proper, there will be two different mindsets heading into the final round.

Geelong will look to demolish Gold Coast in a similar manner, while Fremantle will be hoping to at least get within 50 points of Collingwood based on this performance.

It was an ugly game for footy purists, but Geelong’s record-breaking display will put some fear into those sides finishing 5-8 on the AFL ladder.

Enjoy your moment anon. I actually felt sorry for you when I saw what you wrote on my MCG piece, that's why I haven't bothered baiting you anymore. I realised that you're not what I thought you were at one stage. I had hoped Ross would come good. I had hoped the Hawks wouldn't win 3 in a row. I make flukey $1 multi bets based on aspiration rather than cold hard logic from time to time. We move in different circles. So quote me as much as you like, I know I had backed Ross mainly because I thought you were jumping to conclusions - I contend that events would have happened how they did even if you had said nothing - this implication that Ross only failed because you wrote words on this website is a little delusional I feel. But again, enjoy your moment. You've been waiting for it for years.

Definitely pleased to hear the canine contingent is sticking around at the club. It has, after all, been a dog's breakfast of late. Cerra is an added bonus.

I am sure Ballantyne and Sandilands love him, but your kidding yourself if you think everyone does i would say about the same as Turnbull-Dutton margin. Tucker and Hughes are just two who want out. ...Big ? over Langdon and Cerra and others. losing Lloyd is major. Bond ? gee whizz, our forward coach Hale has done a wonderful job ? Out fitness and health Department have been so strong. The players effort and intensity last Saturday showed there Love of Ross.

As Paul said in 2016: Paul Dawson said | March 3rd 2016 @ 5:19pm | ! Report Nothing has changed since 2011 when the Dockers identified Lyon as the best man for the job. Their decision was correct then, and it’s still correct now. Glad to see Fremantle taking the long-term view for stability and success and backing their man to come through for them. If he hadn’t been re-signed there would have been a queue of clubs enquiring as to his availability. As the all-knowing oracle wrote: anon said | March 22nd 2016 @ 4:19pm | ! Report Depending on on how you view things, either the unskilled Dawson or the undersized Ibbotson are Fremantle’s second best defender now. It’s a poor back line, but Freo have only their selves to blame. For several seasons now they have failed to trade for a key position player. It will be interesting to see how the risk averse, conservative, negative Ross Lyon will respond. The mentally and physically exhausting game plan simply doesn’t hold up against better teams. He’s trying to play a 2005 game plan in 2016. Lyon acknowledges that by bringing in two guys from the Hawthorn system who have no relevant coaching experience. Freo lost Kirk – who helped the midfield become number 1 for clearances – and replaced him with two guys with no experience and only claim to fame having been part of the Hawthorn system as players at some point. That smacks of desperation to me. Smacks of not wanting to be challenged by your assistants too. Freo has been annihilated by Hawthorn every time they have played them in the last two seasons. Last season Freo coughed up an 8 goal half time lead against the Swans early in the season. Swans got within 4 points before Freo did just enough to get a lucky win at home. Then in the QF, despite Freo resting the week before, despite Freo not travelling, despite the Swans having injuries to key players, the Swans outplayed Fremantle having 6 more scoring shots. Another lucky win. Eagles who are traditionally Freo’s bunnies even gave them a pasting late in the season. Richmond beat Freo at Subiaco last season, then outplayed them at the MCG having 6 more scoring shots (many easy shots too). So last season proved Freo don’t really have it, and since then they’ve lost McPharlin. Having such a stacked midfield, most coaches would probably utilise the attacking potential of those players, but given how thin they are in defence this season, Lyon will probably revert further into his shell and become more dependant on his structures. Lyon’s decision making is becoming increasingly bizarre. Bringing in two complete novice coaches to replace Kirk, wanting to move the best midfielder in the game out of the midfield, and wanting to move the best small forward in the game out of the forward line. All this seems desperate to me. Like he has no real plan. Lyon will never coach a team with a better midfield at his disposal. If he can’t win every midfield battle against premiership contenders with this all star midfield line up then he’s never going to beat them with is game plan. tee hee hee !!!

You're not even close to right. The players love him. Look at all those re-signing...young and old. You simply have no idea about him. You even think he is operating the same game plan...as if there is only ever one. You advertise your emptiness.

It would be nice if the Freo Board gave the members a vote to retain or dismiss the present coach. Could you organize that 13th ?

I was right about Lyon and Freo wasn't I, champ? How long have you and others been trying to tell me differently? I've been on my soapbox about it for three years, have never once wavered in my conviction while everyone says Rossy is a coaching genius (LOL!). Even after a 133 point loss and rountinely getting blown off the park for the 3 years, the Lyon teenybopper groupies can't admit fault. Fremantle are stuffed. It will take years to turn around the culture now.

Unfortunately you will not get any club to give a second or third round pick for any one of them none are in Freo's best 22 . Apeness will probably spend most of the year with Sandilands, Bennell, and Ballantyne.in the rehab room. Freo have erred again taking a huge risk with Four injury prone players. They have missed 85 % games in the past two years.

Well, we know the answer to the third question now. Sandi has re-signed: http://www.fremantlefc.com.au/news/2018-08-21/motivated-sandi-commits-for-2019

Going by reports on the press conference from yesterday, Rosich has stated the club's intention to try to trade into the second and third rounds of this year's draft. That does open up some list management questions. Free currently have 39 senior players. Two rookies (Banfield and Duman) have been upgraded, while Spurr has announced his retirement, and Johnno and D Pearce are all but finished. That brings the senior list to 38, with two more picks in the draft (first and fifth rounds), which equals 40, the maximum number of senior players that can be on the list. Trading into the second and/or third round of the draft thus means one or more senior players will have to be either delisted or traded. Either that or Sandi doesn't sign on for another year. If we exclude best-22 players / those who have been selected more than (say) 6 times, as well as players who are still first year, that means one or more of the following will have to be delisted or traded: Tommy Sheridan Ethan Hughes Shane Kersten Brady Grey Cam Sutcliffe Michael Apeness Some might want to throw Darcy Tucker into that list. Note: we're just talking senior list players here. Not 100% sure of the status of all of the above, but I think they're all out of contract at the end of the year. So the questions are: would any of them (maybe Sheridan) have any trade value? And who would be most likely to go? Is it now more likely than not that Sandi won't re-sign?

There are families that play a surrogate parent/mentor role with the young eastern states kids. I walk my dog with a couple who are helping Cerra and Brayshaw to set up a house they will share at the end of this season.

Mark Harvey was coach in 2009. Attendances were as high as almost any other time in Docker history from 2013-2015. They always go down in struggle years. There will be extra pressure and scrutiny on next year though.
