NRL confirm 2018 finals won't be impacted by salary cap investigations

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The NRL have confirmed the Cronulla Sharks are under the salary cap in 2018 and the NRL finals won’t be impacted by ongoing investigations.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg stated the Sharks were well under the salary cap this year.

“On the information available to us, every club in the NRL (and that includes the Sharks) are cap compliant this year. In fact, the Sharks are significantly below the salary cap – and I’m talking more than half-a-million dollars.” said Greenberg.

Greenberg also confirmed the breach of the salary cap was self-reported by the club and not a case of ‘systematic cheating,’ as we have seen in previous examples.

The boss of the NRL also said that while the investigation of the Sharks on the alleged breach of cap goes back some years, but when quizzed by a reporter, said it was less than five.

Greenberg also said the breach of salary cap by Cronulla was not on the scale we have seen previously.

“This is not on the scale of previous salary cap investigations at clubs like Manly, Parramatta or the Melbourne Storm,” Greenberg said during his press conference.

The news of the breach originally broke on Tuesday evening, with revelations the NRL were investigating the club.

Greenberg and the NRL couldn’t put a timeframe on exactly when the investigation into Cronulla would be finished though because they aren’t sure how long it will take.

Cronulla will take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in Round 25 of the NRL season as they try to wrap up a top-four spot ahead of the NRL finals.

I do wish that The Roar would grade posters on quality rather than quantity...

They have confirmed the finals won;t be impacted by salary cap investigations, but can they confirm the finals won;t be impacted by salary cap breaches?

You hit on what I thought. Advantage Valentine Homes - who is still negotiating a new contract correct...? Also makes you wonder how much of Woods' salary they are paying and how crap a job the Dogs did of negotiating that release - they could have got way more... I'm also not aware, (though could be wrong) of any big name signings coming to the Sharks but they are losing Lewis to retirement and failed to offer Remien anything.... So the other thought I have is Greenberg should maybe not be so quick to jump in front of the media and say there is no big problem here - before they have actually looked into it, and if by his math he thinks they are under $500k,- it might explain why they never catch anyone breaking the cap...

how big was the warriors breach compared to the sharks? did the sharks actually go over the cap or misreport something? or are you just salty about the warriors from a long long time ago?

They’ve been looking at it for 3 months if you’ve followed this close enough....or do you just throw around comments based on headlines? First thing they obviously looked at was this year and 2016 to ensure no damage to integrity of the comp. Confirmed $500k under the cap in 2018.

Eh? How can Greenberg declare C-S 'clean' this season before the NRL has completed their investigation?

Most clubs (well run clubs anyway) would be around the same amount. The sharks would have banked on having more origin players this year than they had (graham, fifita, moylan, dugan) and to cover bringing in 2 or 3 players from outside their top 25 squad (it usually counts for around 70-100k for one of these playerson the cap). Im guessing due to the smaller origin contingent, they saved money by not having the origin match payments included in their cap and by not having to bring in a replacement.

The Sharks should be forced to stand down all first graders this weekend while an investigation takes place.

Maybe it’s the difference between a small error and systemic rorting...????

I’m not a sharks fan, but to be fair making a small error and owning up to it (if that is in fact what happened) is not cheating.

The answer is "somewhere in between the 1990 Raiders team and 2007/09 Storm team".

I'm sure the Sharks players will be happy to hear they're half a million under the cap, especially if they asked for an upgrade and were told the club couldn't fit it in under the cap.....not sure why they don't do a reverse Hasler and front load some contract for this season
