Folau's failed pass and Australia's rugby slide

By News / Wire

It was the sliding doors moment that could have spared the Wallabies from a world of pain.

But Israel Folau has seemingly moved on from the non-pass that cost them a sorely-needed victory against Argentina last month and sent Australian rugby tumbling to the depths of despair.

Folau’s inexplicable decision not to dish off to an unmarked Bernard Foley in the dying moments of their Rugby Championship clash on the Gold Coast is even more painful in retrospect.

Had Folau passed and the Wallabies won, the blowtorch would be nowhere near as harsh as it is this week ahead of the return clash against Los Pumas in Salta on Sunday morning (AEST).

The ugly post-match incident involving a distraught Lukhan Tui and an angry fan probably wouldn’t have unfolded, meaning the mood around the team wouldn’t be so dark.

A positive result would have placated supporters who desperately want to see a win, or at the very least made last weekend’s 23-12 defeat to South Africa in Port Elizabeth a little more palatable.

It would have put the Wallabies in the box set to avoid the Rugby Championship wooden spoon – rather than needing at minimum an eight-point win over Los Pumas to do so.

And while Michael Cheika said at the time that it would only have patched up the team’s deficiencies, there’s little doubt his own mandate to coach the team the way he wants would be much stronger.

Folau, who had minimal impact against the Springboks, has been off limits to travelling media in Buenos Aires this week but teammate Tom Banks said the 29-year-old superstar was no longer burdened by his moment of madness – if he ever was.

“He’s not worried about that,” Banks said.

“He had a good game, he scored that unbelievable try and he’s not focused on what people are saying. I don’t think think he looks at social media.

“The things he brings to the team, he’s an unbelievable player.”

Banks is in line to add to his two Test caps in Argentina as a replacement for injured winger Jack Maddocks (thumb).

He could even make his maiden start if Marika Koroibete fails to overcome the concussion he suffered in the first half against the Springboks.

“He trained today, he seemed alright. He’s a pretty quiet guy anyway so you don’t really know what’s happening,” Banks said of Koroibete.

“Obviously if I was to start I think it’d be one of my dreams, probably.”

"Does that mean Foley has complete skillsets for the 10 and the current players around him don’t have complete skillsets for their positions ?" More or less, you wanna fight about it? Foley can run, pass, kick and tackle - he may not have the best run, pass, kick or tackle, but he does have them all. Compare to Beale who can't (rather won't) tackle.

Have to agree, DHP is terrible .He is an atrocious defender and is slow as a wet week. " Foley needs players around him with complete skillsets " Does that mean Foley has complete skillsets for the 10 and the current players around him don't have complete skillsets for their positions ?

From what I have seen of Tom Banks he's a potential superstar. I can't see why he's been kept out of test rugby so far.

Who knows what may have happened ; just another error as was the Beale pass. If you never try something you’ll never make a mistake or win.

Your views on DHP are well stated James Substitute whatever other name you prefer, my point is that we don't need 15 half baked heroes - just 15 rugby players

Reg Roberts – one of the GAGR hosts. I agree. I'm just baffled. Does he want to be a Wallaby or not?

Who's Reg? I think we need to stop pussyfooting around him. Commit to the Wallabies, sign on for comparitive money (ok it will be a bit higher), and give it your all. If that's not good enough, good luck i League or Europe.

DHP has good skills, but he is slow, unfit, and not resilient enough in contact. He did some good things last games, but some poor things too. And he dropped balls under pressure in each of the 2 preceding games from memory.

Watch the Argie defence, they gambled that he wouldn't pass - they'd done their homework. The All Blacks do the same thing, two men wrap him up, one delays for the offload or clear out, but they expect him to hang onto it most of the time.

Yep, he’s had a mountain of success by using that big step, but not this time. Perhaps opposition have finally worked him out. I’m sure that Saffer tackler did not have to buy a beer all night.

100% Give me a solid fullback a'la DHP, solid, quick, hardworking wingers a'la Honeybadger or Alex Newsome over any number of incomplete X factor players. In fact across the park I'd happily have solid hard workers than flawed superstars. An AAC at 13, even a Foley at 10 is not the end of the world if the players around him have complete skillsets. When your players can all do their jobs, you only need one or two X moments from your top players to get a win.

Great players find ways to get into the game. Folau has to rely on others to get him into the game. Ipso facto, Folau is not a great player. I think one of the mains reasons for the Wallabies' woes at the moment is that there's been so much belief in Folau's abilities. Far too much time and effort has been spent on Folau's potential to win games and developing tactics to get him involved in the game. The teams aspirations have been built around him, and up until fairly recently there was little criticism of him, even when the team lost and other players were deemed hopeless. Surely this has an effect on the psyche of the other players and the team. They work hard, Folau jogs in when it suits him, and he's lauded as the saviour. I'd be happy if he was no longer in the side and we could start to build a real team rather than Folau and his acolytes.

My feeling at the time was that he saw Foley and then just decided it was his try. The despair on Foley's face as the ball comes out is painful to watch

Ignoring the unmarked Foley was his first mistake. Israel then failed to score the try himself, second mistake. He then failed to maintain possession in the tackle, his third and most basic mistake as it bought the game to an end. If he had got to the deck and given the Wallabies a chance to recycle, well who knows.

Hoping Argentina wins to force a change. If Cheika's outfit somehow wins then we will lurch along as we have been.

'And what of Folau’s opportunities?' - obviously limited in the last test but the question of these being manufactured by other backs is the issue. Folau needs someone to manufacture opportunities as he doesn't really make any for himself. It is very instructional to watch other wingers (and fullbacks) at work during a game. At both international and in UK rugby which I watch as well the wingers work incredibly hard both in attack and defence to put themselves in positions where they can join the action. This is very true on turnover ball where you see them sprinting back to be in position when the ball is swung wide to their wing. Now I think Folau is a lazy player relying on his natural skills to get him through. This is lazy on the field and lazy off it as well. After six years in rugby why has he not corrected the obvious flaws in his game including his left to right passing. This indeed may have been the reason he didn't pass to Foley! I don't blame him for the lack of one pass but his overall lack of involvement through lack of effort!!

Yeah, pfft. He's raw, and he will make mistakes, but he has more of an upside than most of these players that are out of their depth. Banks, Hodge, Petaia, Kerevi, Jones, Tupou, Alaalatoa, Dempsey, maybe Naisarani – these are the young guys I see making a really positive impact on Australian rugby in the future.

Hahahaha! Sadly true. Maybe Israel's time has passed. Judging by what Reg said on the GAGR podcast this week I'm not certain Folau has a positive impact on the team's effort, psyche and attitude.
