A low bar is good, but it’s not unreasonable to expect significant improvements. Dave Rennie’s 2021 Wallabies were competitive against the top-ranked teams, with a couple of wins and some tight losses, and some of those were with a bunch of first-choice players out with injury. Our disastrous 2022 was down to poor coaching and dumb selections. Put simply, EJ actually made the Wallabies worse. They will get better now that he’s gone.

'Not expecting miracles': Schmidt tempers Wallabies hopes as coach outlines No.1 priority

The more I read about the preparations for the WC the more I’m inclined to the view that Cooper and Hooper were left out of the squad because they were starting to openly question the skills of some of the assistant coaches and lack of any real game planning. As senior players with tons of experience and a deep commitment to the Wallabies it would have been extremely hard for them keep quiet and we know Eddie doesn’t like having people disagree with him or question his approach and decisions.

Settle down. It was a gentle dig, mostly at Christy. I wish both he and Jed all the best.

'I took it hard': RWC heartache that saw snubbed Wallabies star get off the grid - and the inspiration driving him now

Off the grid? The Farm? I suppose you are nearly 5kms away from the nearest Coles and Woolies supermarkets that serve the 70,000 people who live in the area, and 2.5kms from the nearest restaurant.

'I took it hard': RWC heartache that saw snubbed Wallabies star get off the grid - and the inspiration driving him now

Twiggy, this is not about not winning the WC. Nobody with any sense thought that was likely. It’s about bad and dishonourable decisions. It’s about McLennan’s failure to demonstrate good judgement or to work, as a chairman should, with due respect for the opinions of their board and executive.

Exclusive: Embattled chair asks for extension, Rugby Australia meet AGAIN as civil war breaks out

It’s one thing to not be a quitter but quite another to refuse to accept that you’ve cocked things up royally and maybe you should hand over to someone else before you do any more damage. Determination and tenacity are admirable qualities, but without judgement, honesty, and a willingness to accept that you may have limitations they can be very dangerous.

And now the NRL are talking about salary cap exemptions so the their clubs can go after rugby players. Nice one, Hamish. Start a bidding war you can’t possibly win. The way our young players have been treated this year they’d be fools not to consider a switch.

I shudder to think what the next brilliant plan to come out of RA HQ will be.

Another McLennan master stroke.

NRL powerhouse target Wallabies young gun as replacement for Suaalii

I’m still trying to understand what possible logic there is in McLennan making the decision to sack Rennie and appoint Jones, by all reports ramming it through at board and against the wishes of the CEO, having the whole thing go completely pear shaped, and then saying “I’m the man to fix Australian rugby!”

I’m all for self-belief but you do have to face reality sometimes.

Love the see the terms of reference. Do they include the decision to parachute Eddie into the coaches job, or has that been conveniently left in the past?

'Completely unfair': Eddie sledge that angered Waugh, new coaching contenders emerge to rebuild Wallabies

Australian rugby has heaps of problems, as we all know, but EJ was not the answer, he just made them worse.

Eddie Jones quits as Wallabies coach - 'Sometimes you have to eat s--t for others to eat caviar'

Australian Rugby’s ‘Trumpist’ experiment is over! Eddie’s “Make the Wallabies Great Again” plan was never anything more than a showman’s pitch, and yet so many desperately wanted to believe.

McLennan has to go too. He has demonstrated appallingly poor judgement in ditching Rennie and jumping on Eddie’s MWGA bandwagon. His position is untenable.

Eddie Jones quits as Wallabies coach - 'Sometimes you have to eat s--t for others to eat caviar'

He’ll leave. He’ll spin it.

“I’m committed but RA aren’t. ”
“I’m being forced out. ”
“I’d love to be part of the the renaissance of Australian Rugby but it’s not going to happen with the current attitudes in the organisation.”
“I’m not going to stay and coach a side that will continue to lose because RA won’t restructure the game the way I want.”

And I might, just MIGHT, give some itsy bit of creedence to some of these statements except for the debacle of Wallabies 2023 WC campaign. If there was even the slightest hint of quality coaching there I didn’t see it. What I saw from the start was Jones at his best – bluster, belligerence, outlandish claims, and a lack of accountability. The bit that’s got me most perplexed is why so many people fell for it.

'I'm so pissed off': Eddie open to walking away from Wallabies if it suits RA, sticks knife into Hoops, Quade

Game plan? There was a game plan??!?!

COMMENT: RA wanted a Pitbull to bring back some snarl to the Wallabies - Eddie rolled over for a tummy tickle

Look at Eddie’s time with England. Over 7 years he went through 18 assistant coaches and selected selected 76 new players to test rugby. So far in his Wallabies tenure it doesn’t look like things will be any different. In fact, so far he’s failed to make good on his claims and not demonstrated any ability to coach. Along the way he’s managed to take some of our most promising young players and humiliate them. What happens if, in a year’s time under Eddie, we’ve still got a win percentage less than 30 – something that wouldn’t surprise me? We’re then going to be looking for a new coach 1 year out from a Lions Tour. Or do we keep him keep hoping?

Eddie has been a successful coach at times in his career, but he’s also been controversial and more than once has ended up leaving under a cloud. Is that what we’re aiming for?

Richie McCaw's cautionary tale for Rugby Australia - and his message to the Wallabies following RWC flop

Celebrate our differences? Sure. I love running rugby but scrums and lineouts are part of the contest, too. It’s having those different ways of contesting possession that make rugby so much more interesting than NRL, where there is virtually no contest for possession. I grew up playing league (no tackle limits when I started) but it became so boring with all the rule changes that I switched. If the scrum takes a few resets, who cares? Certainly not me.

As for looking to league or BBL for better entertainment value at the ground, you can count me out. I go to watch a sport and enjoy it. Loud music, blaring announcements, smoke, fireworks, bands, are big turn-offs.

It's time to upsize Super Rugby and celebrate our differences

How could they look more amateurish than they already do?

Eddie digs in as he flies home - AGAIN denying he wants to quit to coach Japan, while revealing next step

You’re right, but proper reform while keeping a dud coach won’t get us where we want to be either.

And I’ve yet to be convinced that our chairman is up for the ‘proper reform’ challenge based on his actions in sacking DR and appointing EJ. Hardly a shining example of good judgement.

Jones to return to Australia as Japanese reports link Wallabies coach as favourite to take over Brave Blossoms

Eddie’s seeming abrasive, ego-maniacal and cynical nature may stem from his having no real basis on which to justify his plans and decisions. When the press ask him simple questions his natural belligerence kicks in because he knows he doesn’t have a coherent and rational answers. What does this say about his communication within the team environment? If he can’t clearly enunciate game plans, tactics, and the specifics he wants from each player, is it any wonder we’ve ended up here?

The Wallabies' World Cup campaign was a disaster from start to finish - but sacking Eddie Jones isn't the answer

Why isn’t there a thumbs down/disagree button?

'Keep thinking about that': Eddie's ONE great regret in WC shambles and sliding doors moment that cost QF place

Yep. How to turn a team starting to show some promise into a clueless rabble. Simple logic says Jones has to go but unfortunately simple logic doesn’t apply when large sums of money are involved, and especially not when RA will probably have to part with those large sums if they terminate Eddie’s contract. They’ll have about $12.50 left to employ a new coach. (BTW, RA, I’ll do take it on for that money. I’m about the retire and it would help fill in the time. No, I’ve never coached before but what the hell – I couldn’t do much worse.)

Back to reality. If Eddie won’t go without the big payout and RA would rather spend the money on grassroots rugby (yeah, just joking) then here’s the deal. If he’s so keen to take responsibility, then he should put his money where his mouth is and agree to a KPI. Just one. Let’s say something like a 50% win rate for 2024. Achieve it and he stays. Miss it and he walks without the money.

WALLABIES REPORT CARD: 'F--k mate, what didn't go wrong?'- Few pass marks and an F for Eddie in Pool C disaster

Agree. Absolutely nothing gained by taking a young side to this WC and having their confidence trashed. This has done far more harm than good.

Eddie’s narrative about a “smash and grab” raid on this WC while building for the next never made sense. If it was imperative to give a bunch of young players WC experience to lift our chances of winning in 2027 how could we possibly hope to win this one with so few experienced players? Having experienced players in the team is either important or it’s not. You can’t have it both ways.
