No western Sydney WSR team for 2019: Hore

By News / Wire

NSW Rugby Union boss Andrew Hore says there won’t be a World Series Rugby team in western Sydney in 2019, but he hasn’t ruled out his organisation backing one for future years.

WSR backer Andrew ‘Twiggy Forrest revealed earlier this year he was looking to establish a team in western Sydney for a competition involving Perth-based Western Force and sides from several other countries including Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Japan.

The NSW Rugby Union has had difficulties establishing a strong foothold in the fiercely competitive western Sydney sporting marketplace, a challenge undermined by Penrith’s axing from the Shute Shield in late April.

While Hore outlined plans to develop new school and club competitions in the region ,he was adamant it wouldn’t be practical to have a new franchise up and running in 2019.

“There won’t be a World Series team there next year,” Hore said at a media briefing on Thursday.

“There’s a lot of work to be done in and around western Sydney and nobody is saying no to that. I think it’s just making sure it’s done in an effective way.”

Hore said the establishment of a western Sydney team was still a topic for debate going forward and Forrest was aware of the union’s view.

“We had one meeting with his representative and I think everyone is in agreement that you can’t put a professional team built on sand, it just doesn’t work,” he said.

“It needs further discussion. We’ve got to look after 100,000 rugby players in our own state and with everything else going on, it’s a lot of work.”

Fair comment to a point but ignores fact that Penrith already has an advanced starting position. Not a perfect position but light years ahead of the GWS standing start.

'Much talk, but will there be the appropriate action? Will the people at FOSUFC agree to any concessions to assist, Penrith, Parramatta & West Harbour?' The answer to both questions is no. They probably don't even realise that Penrith has been one of the better NSW under age teams in recent times with existing clubs feeding them.

Not one flicker of interest in AFL for me now, hasn't North Shore been going for more than 100 years I remember when I was a kid going to Trumper Park on a Sunday to watch East Sydney. They don't exist. You must be like these Vic Expats that join our group for a beer, one bloke believes that AFLX is the great game that will conquer the world. I remember keeping this classic comment from the AFL blog last May after the game in Shanghai, ''Roar Guru Cousin Claudio said | May 21st 2018 @ 3:27pm | ! Report A “sell out” crowd from a “sell out” organisation who would sell their own grandmothers, if it made them money or look better. As a taxpayer, I greatly protest the waste of time and money. Can’t wait to see how much credit the Victorian Rules marketing department will take every time we sell something to China now. Victorian Rules, “the game that made the world.” Can’t wait for the AFLX game in the grounds of Buckingham Palace next.

Aligee, Every Fijian bloke I have spoken to over many years, their main objection to AFL is you score by kicking. Too much kicking, not enough PURPOSEFUL running. Running in circles. Similar with Tongan , Samoan & Cook Islanders I presume. AFL would love to recruit them, don't you think?

At the Fiji vs Force game, the Fox cameras picked up images of Twiggy among the kids clapping both sides onto the field and the Fox commentators made very favourable references to him a few times. There were more shots of Twiggy handing out sunscreen and chatting to DHP and others. Contrast for me was the images of Clyne a few weeks ago swanning it in the corporate box at a NRC game in Sydney. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo4Nc4hnT5W/

Not jealous one bit, in general they suit rugby and rugby league and in general they don't like the continual running of Australian football. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/former-waratah-star-bans-son-from-rugby-because-the-sport-is-too-dangerous-20160610-gpgoxi.html It would not be telling the truth not to point out the polynesian effect in junior rugby. Also page 15 Sydney North shore times, this year .... http://newslocal.smedia.com.au/north-shore-times/ This article was in the Daily Mirror but has a paywall on it.

Having a team in Western Sydney would be great. I was very sad when they canned the Rams from the NRC, used to go to all their games. I think a lot of western Sydney goes to league due to lack of options for real rugby. Hope it comes through.

Aligee, you are blatantly wrong, you say, ''because we know in the future that the Wallabies will be like many other teams and be mainly Polynesian'' Aligee, like the All Blacks, for instance, you seem to be jealous that no Pacific Island people want to play AFL , where you get penalised for running (too far)etc. Pacific Islanders are magnificent athletes. Here is the All Blacks Squad of 33 players for 2018 , certainly not mainly Polynesian as you said. ''The 33-strong squad is as follows (with age, Super Rugby club, province and Test caps): Forwards: Hookers Dane Coles (31, Hurricanes / Wellington, 56) Nathan Harris (26, Chiefs / Bay of Plenty, 13) Codie Taylor (27, Crusaders / Canterbury, 32) Props Owen Franks (30, Crusaders / Canterbury, 98) Joe Moody (29, Crusaders /Canterbury, 34) Tim Perry (30, Crusaders / Tasman, uncapped) Karl Tu'inukuafe (25, Chiefs / North Harbour, 3) Ofa Tuungafasi (26, Blues / Auckland, 17) Locks Scott Barrett (24, Crusaders / Taranaki, 19) Brodie Retallick (27, Chiefs / Hawke's Bay, 68) Samuel Whitelock (29, Crusaders / Canterbury, 99) Loose Forwards Sam Cane (26, Chiefs / Bay of Plenty, 55) Shannon Frizell (24, Highlanders / Tasman, 1) Jackson Hemopo (24, Highlanders / Manawatu, 1) Kieran Read (32, Crusaders / Counties Manukau, 109) - Captain Ardie Savea (24, Hurricanes / Wellington, 25) Liam Squire (27, Highlanders / Tasman, 17) Luke Whitelock (27, Highlanders / Canterbury, 5) Backs: Halfbacks TJ Perenara (26, Hurricanes / Wellington, 45) Aaron Smith (29, Highlanders / Manawatu, 74) Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi (23, Chiefs / Taranaki, uncapped) First five-eighths Beauden Barrett (27, Hurricanes / Taranaki, 65) Damian McKenzie (23, Chiefs / Waikato, 15) Richie Mo'unga (24, Crusaders / Canterbury, 1) Midfielders Ryan Crotty (29, Crusaders / Canterbury, 37) Jack Goodhue (23, Crusaders / Northland, 1) Anton Lienert-Brown (23, Chiefs / Waikato, 24) Sonny Bill Williams (33, Blues / Counties Manukau, 46) Outside backs Jordie Barrett (21, Hurricanes / Taranaki, 5) Rieko Ioane (21, Blues / Auckland, 16) Nehe Milner-Skudder (27, Hurricanes / Manawatu, 11) Waisake Naholo (27, Highlanders /Taranaki, 19) Ben Smith (32, Highlanders /Otago, 67) Aligee, stick to your beloved AFL.

And what's that got to do with getting a professional rugby team going in Western Sydney? There is already rugby support in Western Sydney - there was little AFL support for GWS. Have you forgotten that Rugby Australia disbanded the Western Force in August 2017, shortly after the Coaching Panel and many support staff and most of the players moved across to the Melbourne Rebels and RugbyWA went into Voluntary Administration. By the end of 2017 the Western Force (name and IP was still held by Rugby Australia) didn't exist? There were only 8 members of the previous playing squad still in Perth but they were being payed by RA. Coaches and players were recruited in early February 2018 with a pre-season starting in March (under Hodgson's direction). The head coach started at the end on March. It didn't stop WSR playing the initial game against the Fijian Warriors only 6 weeks later. That's only 3 months after the first player was hired. The WF won that game and nearly 20,000 turned up to watch that game. It's an example of what a professional outfit can achieve. I think that we're just used to the slow-moving train wreck that epitomises RA and NSWRU.

I don't think they are incompetent, i think the game is hard to understand and therefore sell, also like RL and to a lesser degree Australian football a tough and fairly dangerous game to play the older you get. I think they are up against it in a city like Sydney which is the self professed home of the game for 3 codes, soccer, RL and RU in this country. Not only that but the last 3 or so years many of the private schools in Sydney's East and North have taken up in varying degrees AF, something which the NSW AFL have had to pay for ( grounds, jumpers, umpiring) but will benefit from in the future, this is the very heartland of Australian RU - not that it matters a great amount because we know in the future that the Wallabies will be like many other teams and be mainly Polynesian which TBH is another reason why the white anglo/Irish middle class wont put their kids into rugby.

There's sure to be a place but there will likely be an entry fee. It evidently cost Japan/Sunwolves $30M to break into Super Rugby. Would have been big advantages from Forrest's initial $150M commitment which may not be available going forward.
