Wollongong Wolves bid rejected as FFA provides expansion update

By Stirling Coates / Editor

The FFA has today announced that the number of A-League expansion bids under consideration will be reduced from eight to six, with both the Wollongong Wolves and Ipswich Pride FC, unfortunately, missing the cut.

“Since receiving the eight bids, we have carefully evaluated information provided and commitments made by the bidding parties. It was clear certain bids were stronger than others,” FFA CEO David Gallop said in a press release.

“We appreciate the efforts of the teams from Wollongong and Ipswich, who both put a considerable amount of work towards this process.

We were impressed with their professionalism and we encourage them each to continue to work towards further strengthening their credentials as we continue to grow the A-League footprint in [the] coming years,” he said.

The news means the upcoming expansion licenses are still being considered for Southern Expansion (NSW), Macarthur South-West Sydney, Western Melbourne, Team 11 (VIC), South Melbourne and Canberra.

The A-League has been looking to add another two teams in time for the 2019-20 season, initially fielding ten bids from interested parties last year. Brisbane City were the first to pull out, while Macarthur and South-West Sydney combined their bids before the shortlist of eight was released last August.

“We have six bids that all have positive aspects but require further work in certain areas. We need to continue our consultation with those bid teams to ensure that they adequately address these areas to ensure their future sustainability, which includes securing stadia, catchment area and financial capital.

“It is critical that FFA can be satisfied the successful bidders will be sustainable from day one as well as meet a variety of commitments that will benefit the longer-term growth of the Hyundai A-League.

“We look forward to continuing to work with these groups, the existing clubs and other stakeholders to make expansion a success for the whole of football,” Gallop added.

Plans for expansion are expected to be finalised at the next meeting of the FFA board in November of this year.

as the bureau of meteorolgy will confirm: on average sydney has rain on 135 days and melbourne 139. a difference of 4 days a year. the big difference is on average sydney gets 1,233 mm of rain per year and melbourne only 603. so sydney is more than twice as wet. sydney is 2 degrees hotter in summer and melbourne is 3 degrees cooler in winter. i live in wollongong.

Two teams generate 50% of entire A league crowd and membership. Victory (n1 club) and Wanderers Look at tonights Melbourne derby. 70% of the 45,000 crowd is Victory !!

Why do you keep going on that Sydney is an all code city like it is something unique? Time to learn the facts Melbourne is an all code city too if you didn't notice. 2 Rugby code teams 2 Soccer teams A basketball team

I know trying to balance the sale of the '51%' Member ownership with the sugar daddy requirement has been a challenging aspect of the Canberra bid. I can't honestly comprehend how, for the investment that the sugar daddy will need to put up both upfront (Someone has to pay for the licence fee after all) + ongoing that they are going to be comfortable with ceding control of the club to members. And I don't think the 51% model would see the members contributing anything upfront towards the licence fee etc..... there has been plenty of huff and puff around the 'constitution etc' governing it all, but the devil will be in the detail. I think they've done a pretty good job putting the bid together, but it all hinges on a wealthy benefactor to make it come anywhere near stacking up.

Canberra bid appears to be all things to all people. On the one hand there are promises of a sugar daddy and/or an affiliation with a European club, but the bid also states that they are looking for the club to be owned 51% by the members (would require about 10,000 contributing $1,000 each). This constant boast of 7,500 members (none of whom have spent a single cent), tells me that the bid has probably the most smoke and mirrors attached to it (actually, most of the bids fall into that category, so that's an unfair statement). In the meantime, the one actual club which exists now, has existed for 60+ years, which has a long term lease on a boutique stadium near the Melbourne CBD and would boast an immediate fan base, is the one most likely to miss out.

At the end of the day, very few clubs in any of the major sporting codes here would be profitable without the huge subsidies received from head office. Its part of the business model at the end of the day.

Its interesting RF - I have a decent knowledge about one bid but not the rest of them. I do have on that basis though some idea of what is entailed in some of the other bids and how they relatively stack up. A lot of guessing going on here haha - and I know that as even someone with some reasonable knowledge, there is a genuine lack of transparency at all about the offers being made.

The issue of crowds is a funny one. For all the bids, it forms one part of the business model. But I'd be suprised if any of the expansion team bids stack up without the need for significant outside investment, that likely is vastly more important than crowd numbers. For the Canberra bid specifically, I understand that their estimates of crowds are very optimistic, but that in broader terms, unless they have some form of sugar daddy (There has been rumours of this that and other so far from Europe, but nothing confirmed) then its never going to stack up anyway, even with the promised subsidy from Government.

Remembering the key fact though that none of those 7500 foundation members have paid a cent yet. How many will actually turn into true members. And while I'm sure eventually the W-League team will come under the same umbrella, my understanding (from some relatively reasonable insider contacts) is it will be a few years till that happens.

Surely Canberra get in Kangas, with the Wolves gone they’d have to be everyone’s 2nd favourite to get in.

Neither is very enticing in my eye Randy, but I’d prefer 33 games if I had to choose. We already play each 3 times so can’t hurt to continue it. 22 games is just too short.

Probably the unfortunate truth Mattq, I wondered where the money was coming from with the Wolves. Unless they can get Bruce Gordon to bankroll them they may struggle in future bids.

Brilliant comparison shows football in this country is run by people who are corrupt .its never about the fans the history the region its always about the dollars .the wolves deserve their spot southern expansive does not they are greed personified a bid based on Asian property developers getting their hands on land to build apartments .they have no exclusive territory no football background they have a crooked politician as their chairman no fan base no one region .they are in sydnye fc territory ffs.

the crowds for rugby and league tell a different story there isnt enough support in Canberra .matters not wolves could easily average 8 to 10 thousand a game made not difference .the game wolves played against sdyeny fc trial got 8600 when sdyeny fc played an A legaue game in Wollongong they got nearly 13,000 makes not difference to ffa they want Melbourne and sydneyy teams

the wolves had all the infrastructure money and a new market .actually its all based on facts emotional yes factual yes too that as well .that foxtel wants only capital city bids is factual that they be in Sydney and Melbourne is factual wait to ffa announce the two winners then see if i am right .when the info comes from inside the FFA its factual .good to see so many wolves fans out there commenting its been in the thousands on social media and they should be disappointed . i would be worried if no one commented clearly big attachment to the club and their brand nationally , a lot of the other bids would love to have this level of support and they do not . Look at southern expansion how are they still there they have no support on exclusive region no stadium slap bang in the middle of sydney fc territory with 30% of sydney fc members residing in st george area southern bid base.. A league loss and foxtel as well ,i will be cancelling my foxtel subscription as well

BTW Kangas, I'm not arguing with you about Woolongong not being admitted into the A-League. I think Woolongong would be a great asset to the A-League. What I'm concerned about is the agendas of football fans in this country. Some of the comments I've heard recently "I'm not following the A-League if Bolt signs on, makes the comp a joke" "I'm boycotting the A-League because if no Woolongong" "If Southern Expansion gets in, that's it for me as far as A-League goes" "The A-League is a plastic league without Sth Melbourne" All these comments of throwing our toys out if we don't get it our way. We have enough haters on football in this country see our friend on the Football tab Mister AFL, others like Kochie. I just wish football fans could just unite together & get it right.
