Naisarani to travel with Wallabies as Cheika finalises Spring Tour squad

By Stirling Coates / Editor

Fijian-born Isi Naisarani has moved one step closer to making a Wallabies debut, after he was named as a development player for Australia’s upcoming Spring tour in Europe.

The 23-year-old, who will become eligible for national selection in April, is one of two development players Michael Cheika will take on tour – alongside Rob Valentini.

The Fijian made his Super Rugby debut in late 2017 with the Western Force, but made headlines earlier this year when he signed one-year deals with both the Melbourne Rebels and Rugby Australia.

He’ll no doubt be in Cheika’s mind when World Cup squads have to be finalised next year.

The other big addition to the squad is Tatafu Polota-Nau, who last made an appearance in Australia’s disastrous loss to Argentina on the Gold Coast.

Uncapped duo Jake Gordon and Jordan Petaia are also eligible to make their national debuts, while Adam Ashley-Cooper could be in line for his first appearance in the green and gold since 2016.

Adam Coleman appears to have overcome his injury complaint after being named, but the news is not as good for Jed Holloway and Brendan Paenga-Amosa, who have both not made the final cut.

The three-match tour will begin next week, with a clash against Wales on Sunday morning (Australian time), before the Wallabies travel to Italy a week after and England the week after that.

After a horror Rugby Championship and 3-0 Bledisloe whitewash, a lot of pressure has been placed on the team to get good results from their end-of-year fixtures.

Forwards
Jermaine Ainsley, Allan Alaalatoa, Rory Arnold, Adam Coleman, Jack Dempsey, Folau Fainga’a, Ned Hanigan, Michael Hooper (c), Sekope Kepu, Tolu Latu, Tatafu Polota-Nau, David Pocock, Izack Rodda, Pete Samu, Rob Simmons, Scott Sio, Taniela Tupou

Backs
Adam Ashley-Cooper, Tom Banks, Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau, Bernard Foley, Will Genia, Jake Gordon, Dane Haylett-Petty, Samu Kerevi, Marika Koroibete, Jack Maddocks, Sefa Naivalu, Jordan Petaia, Nick Phipps, Matt Toomua

Development Players
Isi Naisarani, Rob Valentini

Nah, not pining for Eddie, just a team with passionate go-forward against the odds...

That's the weird bit Stillmissit, the officials had a very good look and still got it wrong. On my fourth view yesterday my initial opinion hasn't changed, clear penalty and a yellow card. First point of contact is glancing shoulder onto chest/neck area, with all impetus going up and forceful contact to the chin. No real attempt to use arms either. Unfortunately Farrell is something of a serial offender in this and the officials (primarily Agnes) bottled it.

I don't think I can disagree more. He makes stupid decisions and gives away stupid penalties at least once or twice a game, and is involved in fisty cuff rubbish every match.

Valetini is a great prospect and a great Victorian player. His brother is in the sights of the Rebels which make his dad - a proud Harlequin Club veteran - beam even more.

I reckon the wallabies should get the piggy bank out and try to get Brad Fittler across from league. He's a deadset legend and he's pretty fit. Or maybe Cooper Cronk. He's got a decent pass and he's tough.

@ Akari i think a Fijian wing went on a tour hen ineligible before also - cant recall is name. i dont think its a surprise - his name has been in the news for like over a year as the next big thing from australia - everyone counting days till he is eligible. a real concern for aussy shud be the guys getting picked and dropped like flies and those not even thought of like Higginbotham and Cooper to name 2. yes they are not everyones cup of tea - but for a world cup u need experienced players. look at any team that won the cup - they had buckets of experience. hence the selection of AAC - though not very good one coz the last time i saw him play in France , he was slow a second rower caught up with him.

errr - bit of a wrong analogy AKIRA does not have discipline problem - his problem is losing focus during the game seems he drifts off into la la land while the game is on and then suddenly comes back to the park.

Horwill was the incumbent Wallaby captain in the last Lions tour. He didn't move overseas until 2015. I'm not entirely sure who you're referring to here.

Also watch it to see how a low ranked team can rise to the occasion to beat a team that is for all intent and purpose miles better.

Hey, I've got a great idea, let's bring back James Horwill also. He's got lots of e experience. What's that? The clown did that for the Lions tour!!!! Did that work? Oh, it didn't. Hmmmm let me think of another old over the hill player to bring back then ;) time for the clown to go back to his regular job at the circus

Not sure he was ever a world class centre. His best rugby for mine was always from the wing, where he could inject himself anywhere, especially in defence, and his lack of passing was less of an issue.

SMI surprise. Eddie could be looking for a job . Welcome home Eddie you have proven your ready to coach the Wallabies. Back to the Future 4. Sadly there are alot of good and talented players who may need some development. problem being very few will be selected by the current Cheika Conundrum and if so will get to play outside of their actual positions.

I think I said elsewhere - coming off the bench he is often best on park. Unfortunately, he is worst on park about as often. He is Australia's Akira Ioane, immensely talented but let down by stupid decisions and discipline.

Nailed it, Dave... Mortlock was our last 'great' centre.

Moriarty: Do not write this kind of stuff, you are raising my greatest fear and that is they bring back Eddie Jones after Cheika goes!

Fionn: I think Latu is a great bench player who brings a fair amount into the game later.

Thanks CB, at least there is a reason to drop him but like you I am bemused by BPA being dropped, still Cheika sees things we do not, due to his deep and critical insight into players abilities. The question I would like to ask him is 'you have had 4 years to rebuild this team, by bringing in players who have 'retired' from Wallaby contention what have you been doing this last 4 years?' add to this 'why is the team not mostly settled for the RWC?' I think he leans on old players due to their history and he struggles to see a future in a young player. Eddie Jones did the same thing with MacQueen's team by playing them into the ground.

Sheek: Interesting comment. I thought about it and on one level you are correct, real power comes from competence and we are very short of that. The other thing about lack of power is it mostly leads to a vacuum that is then filled by something else, in our case rampant politics trumping a focus on the issues ie 'damn the issues I want to focus on me!' or, in the states case, on us. It was in a vacuum similar to this one that allowed MacQueen to become coach, in normal circumstances he would never have got the job but the ARU were desperate. Are they desperate enough now?

In Aus, I think “outside centre” has become “inside winger”. Or “outside flanker” ... At his best, I would pick AAC at 13 now. But not he’s not at his best now. Not even close. Bring on Jordan P. The times they are a’changing ...
