Reports: McGuire set for immediate Cowboys move

Brisbane forward Josh McGuire is reportedly on the verge of signing with North Queensland effective immediately.

Kangaroos star Josh McGuire is reportedly set to be granted a shock release by Brisbane to join North Queensland immediately.

McGuire has three years remaining on his NRL deal with the Broncos, but News Corp Australia reports the Queensland forward is headed for Townsville.

The moves comes just a year after the 28-year-old appeared set to finish as a one-club player, having re-signed with the Broncos until the end of 2021.

It will the first roster adjustment for Brisbane since the club announced the signing of reigning Dally M coach of the year Anthony Seibold from the 2020 season.

Current mentor Wayne Bennett is currently still the coach of the NRL side, which remains locked in negotiations with a number of off-contract stars.

Rising talent Tevita Pangai Junior, prop Matthew Lodge and winger Corey Oates have yet to re-sign for next year, while Joe Ofahengaue has one more year on his current deal.

Despite the Broncos being widely tipped to be in title contention next season, allowing McGuire to walk would provide more space in the cap to extend all four players.

McGuire has played 194 games for the Broncos since debuting in 2009, and has also appeared in 11 State of Origin games for the Maroons and 15 Tests for Australia.

His move to the Cowboys would be a huge boost for a forward pack that already houses Jason Taumalolo and Jordan McLean, but is now without retired champion halfback Johnathan Thurston.

The Cowboys and Broncos have been reached for comment.

So we keep Bird and lose one of our best players?? This isn't looking good for the club.

Gutted. The touted rookies have not proved themselves and we let go of our most consistent forward player apart from Corey Oates (who may move also). Are we sure it's McCullough and not McGuire??

Remember we went through this 10yrs ago with the 'in the next few years' scenario. On the upside, Turpin might get more serious consideration as well as the Thaiday/McGuire dummy option has been removed. Looking forward to seeing what Savelio brings next year.

Have to say I am not dismayed by the loss of McGuire even though it leaves the Broncos with a bit less experienced pack, I reckon they've got the best of him and he was probably going to just do the same things for the balance of his career if he stayed. Good forward, great worker but maybe not the impact player to win the big games. You have to lock up those young guys before Wayne starts his dismantling of the squad, he'll start with Pangai Jnr & then try to nab a few of the others so lock them in now. Broncos folded against the dragons when Glenn missed that final so his steadying game is probably better for the kids than Mcguire's sometimes grubby approach. Hope Savellio gets on the park this year, looking forward to that.

At least we've still got Macca and Gillett there, but it's definitely going to be interesting if it's mostly rookies

I don't think anyone suggested they were, just that Brisbane will need a fair bit of cap space if they want to lock up most of the young talent coming through

All well and good having the best 'young' pack in the comp but there's a lot to be said for having experience both on the park and training paddock. Can't begrudge a bloke for opting to ensure his career and pay packet that (most likely) may not have been the case in Brisbane. Good luck to him.

With Alex Glenn, Gillett and McCullough still there that's enough experience. As a Cowboys fan I'm pretty disappointed we are signing McGuire. I reckon he is a really limited player and can't stand his "wanna be a hard man" antics.

Phenomenal signing what an athlete. Will bring much needed aggression to a quality forward pack. The Cowboys have lacked an enforcer since the Sims brothers left, this is a great move.

Losing Thaiday, Sims and McGuire is some experience through the pack. I like the option of having someone on the bench with a bit of experience, but it's in short supply. I supposed Savelio can play lock and he at least has a few seasons of experience.

How on Earth is Brisbane breaching the cap compared to the Storm,Roosters and Sharks??? The cap makes no sense other teams are getting away with it.

The Cowboys were not looking for another forward. This signing would suggest Matt Scott may of made a big decision on his future. It is no secret he is struggling after surgery. Maybe this is insurance. Bit small for the front row, but good at 13 in the middle where the Cowboys suffered this season defensively, perhaps a different role for Lolo and Hess. About time too. Soon to be revealed.

I can't say I am sad to see him leave.

That comes out to $640K a year, not too bad for a forward. Most likely more than what he was on at the Broncos. You would have to think a lot of the senior guys would have been on lower salaries because they wanted to play under Wayne and now that he is going, they don't feel the same way.

$3.2m over 5 years isn't exactly massive money though

Reported 3.2 million dollar deal, would be a good reason, I think given Bennett's reluctance to overpay forwards, I would say he was on less at the Broncos. I do wonder if Wayne's move to the Souths had anything to do with it though.
