Broncos sack Bennett, sign Seibold

By The Roar / Editor

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has been sacked by the club and replaced with former South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Anthony Siebold effective immediately.

Bennett is set to join the Rabbitohs as Seibold’s replacement.

The Broncos released the following statement confirming Bennett’s departure from the club on their website earlier today.

“The Brisbane Broncos Board has terminated coach Wayne Bennett’s contract with immediate effect.

“The terms of this termination are confidential.

“The Broncos thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best in the future.

“An announcement about the club’s coach for the 2019 season will be made soon.

“The Broncos would like to thank members, sponsors, corporate partners, players and staff for their patience and understanding through this period of transition.”

Bennett had already agreed to coach the Rabbitohs from 2020 onwards and Seibold, likewise, had agreed to take over the Broncos from that date, signing a four-year contract with the club.

Speculation that the mooted future swap could be made an immediate one instead has been strong, but Bennett’s unwillingness to leave the Broncos has been a major stumbling block.

Bennett stated in a press conference on Friday that he intended to honour his contract with the Broncos for 2019, in a move that it seems has ultimately forced Brisbane’s hand.

“I’ve informed the players, the staff and the chairman that I’m staying and I will honour my 2019 contract which was always my plan,” Bennett said on Friday.

“I’ve spoken to South Sydney. I’m feeling for them a lot but at the same time I have a responsibility here.

“I’ve had a great relationship with the fans my whole career and I just felt I’d be letting them down a year before I should.”

Bennett did admit during his press conference that it was possible he’d be sacked by the club, a turn of events which has now come to pass.

Siebold voiced his frustration with Bennett earlier on Sunday, saying he’d “had a gutful” of his fellow NRL coach’s behaviour.

“I’m sick of Wayne carrying on. I’ve bit my tongue and said nothing until now,” Seibold said.

“I just want clarity and so do the players. I feel for the players at both clubs. It’s a joke.”

None of this really matters, who cares who said what to whom and when and how much and he did this and they did that. Who gives a flying. A lot of BS and speculation and irrelevant rubbish. What matters is who can get the best out of a team and press for a title shot. Bennett has how many titles? Siebold may be a good coach and maybe he had a good team with Souths. Bennett has the proof. Siebold has jack. Siebold LOOKS LIKE he maybe a great coach. We will find out in time.

Tempering my previous comment - if Bennett did contact Souths players and get involved in their business while he was 'honouring his contract' then silly of him.

Big Daddy, Wayne did put a great list together, but to be fair, the Broncos have almost 40% of the Emerging Queenslanders on their books which is a farcical situation and needs to be addressed urgently by the QRL.

You've changed your tune. Six months ago, you thought Siebold could walk on water.

Gday BA, you are talking about Bennett? He talks to the media, only when he wants to! The man is famous for his handling of the media . So yes Wayne was playing the media again. Bennett has most likely breached his contract by talking to souths players about pre season trainings and recruitment . I wonder what the bronco players make of Bennett talking to Souths players and if ,like me, they are also wondering who is he recruiting for Souths ? Who will be the new Darius?

Couldn't agree more. But I think it was taken out of his hands by management from both clubs. Wayne had put together a fairly handy squad and wanted to give it one last hurrah. I get the impression South's wanted this done more than bronco's plus media speculation didn't help. Good luck to the journo's trying to get an interview with him.

Can't dismiss the opinion attack the person huh? Mate, you can believe whatever you want, you certainly don't need my approval. I think it's pretty clear that neither of us is going to change the others mind so there's not much point continuing this if we've just going to keep retreading the same things. Have a good one.

As a sports lover it is never appetizing to see a club legend sacked. Everyone has a view who is too blame, but it is fair to say all parties are responsible in some way. I will reflect on Wayne as one of the best club coaches I have ever studied, second only to Craig Bellamy. My view is that Wayne hung in at the Broncos because of his obvious love for the club, and because he knew he had a top 30 list that can win the Premiership in 2019. He knows better than anyone how good Payne Haas and David Fifita is and that they could give him his 8th P’ship. The Rabbitohs are an ageing list with poor depth after their top 13. This will test “Long Neck”

Make sure you don't have any commitments on the evening of Thursday 2nd May 2019, especially for those in NSW and Queensland, Because the South Sydney Rabbitohs will be up against the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday Night Football-and it will be the first time Wayne Bennett will be up against his former club and he will have a point to prove to the Brisbane Broncos board of directors. Should be an interesting night ahead.

Your position has been consistent and Broncocentric all along. If you were a journalist you would be writing very short articles quoting what the Broncos and Wayne said as the truth and everything else as said by anyone else as crapola. For the media to get this saga 100% correct was impossible but at least they tried. It's become a consistent theme on Roar for people to be accused of just following the media but many of us are independent thinkers who ironically aren't sheep but will take what they can from all angles , one of which is the media.

Big Daddy, my suggestion is, just keep walking with 'blinkers and headphones on' and you will be right mate! Btw, I couldn't give a rats what White or Seibold are and will do but, there is a proper procedure to do things and they have completely and unmorally stuffed this up and have been shown up of how amateurish they really are by master Bennett.

Yes, no information. You have no idea how many times he's called and tried to organise a meeting. Bennett never answered or returned his call. You're talking about two guys with a 40yr history together. No one wants to sack a bloke via voicemail but what's the option B if one party won't get in touch? You've just taken pieces of everything you've read and put this BS rant together. Bennett was given every opportunity to leave amicably but didn't. He held an unsanctioned press conference then refused to talk to the board thereafter. He knew it was coming and made them do the dirty work. You couldn't stand Bennett before but now he's your coach - everyone else is the dribbler. I like your impression of 'fair go'. If the club wants you gone, that's a fair go. If you leave - disloyal.

A few extra bucks is apparently according to 100% accurate all the time media, between $300,000 and $900,000. I'd hold out too for that sort of coin.

But how do you engineer a circus after it's started? Feel free to go back though my comment history if want, I've never once said the swap wouldn't happen. I've taken issue with the idea that a coach can't possibly stay with a team if they're contracted elsewhere a year down the track (esspecially when it's hapened many times before) as well as the idea that an immediate swap was in the best interests of both clubs stability. I think it's fair to say the Broncos stability is very much up in the air at the moment as a direct result of the swap happening. I've taken issue with the medias coverage of the saga, which has been an absolute farce. It's been nothing but speculation built on speculation, contradictory sources, biased "experts", very selective reporting of information and an ever changing one sided narative. High on opinion and light on facts. All of this primarily driven by a group with a controlling interest in one of the parties and a well documented history of using media coverage to sway events in their favour. Even today we're supposedly getting inside information into the confidential terms of release. I don't see how Bennett getting sacked vindicates the mannor journos chose to cover the story. I know we've had our disagreements over the last week, but I appologise for for suggesting you're a mindless sheep, that was unnessesary. My opinions havn't changed but you're entitled to believe whatever you want regardless of what I think.

No information? That Paul White (he's supposed to be the CEO, for gods sake) would say anything, his excuse(s) are just not on, if he really wanted to get in contact with Bennett then he surly would have known where Bennett is! He's just used a flimsy excuse as he and the Broncos wanted to terminate Bennett's contract asap, without any proper morals, procedures and decency, all they wanted to do is save $$$'s and it back fired on them! The people you have mentioned above with the Bunnies are exceptions, they did get a 'fair go' at the Bunnies and they were released of their duties and contracts, not like this Broncos and Seibold fiasco, with their gutless gibber and sabotaging Bennett, behind his back, to try and save some $$$'s! It didn't work and that was Wayne Bennett's main criteria, this time, that he won't go as easily as he did in 2009, when he coached the Dragons!

The bloke that's come out looking worst in all this mess is Seibold. The downright pathetic whingeing in yesterdays paper was barf inducing. Everybody knows he's been negotiating with the Bronc's since halfway through this year, evidenced by his flat out refusal to sign an extension deal with Souths....even though a contract was put in front of him on numerous occasions. And now he expects us to believe he was blindsided by Souths signing Bennett.....pull the other one Anthony!! You've been planning to walk out on the club that gave you a chance for 6 months now.
