Wanderers fans demand answers from management

By Osman Asmar / Roar Rookie

On Saturday night, Western Sydney had their pants pulled down by a classy Melbourne Victory team, copping a 4-0 hammering.

Keisuke Honda said afterwards that the Victory didn’t really play well, the Wanderers were just poor, and added that the Victory need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

As a result, Wanderers fans are demanding answers on management’s reluctance to invest in the squad.

Paul Lederer said at the fan forum that the coach chooses the players he wants to sign and the final decision is with the coach. When Tony Popovic was coach, he said that he had the final say on the signings.

Fans have been critical on the club’s inability to retain players after having a good season. Instead, the club aims to replace these quality players with cheaper options, and they’ve ended up with too many fillers.

The other common criticism has been a reluctance to sign marquee players. The Wanderers have a poor history when signing marquee players, but the likes of Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory have shown the right way to do it.

At the moment, the Wanderers are missing leadership and experience, with poor recruitment contributing towards lack of quality and depth in key positions (injuries hasn’t helped either), and the results and performances are showing as much.

Western Sydney have a top coach, in Markus Babbel, who is not happy with his squad. January may not see new faces arrive, however if Babbel decides to stay beyond this season, he will already have a fair idea of who he should release and who he should sign.

Right now, management need to give answers, otherwise the fans will vote with their wallets.

I don't think Mariners are that bad, they gave the smurfs a good fright - they're the unluckiest team in the League right now.

It is a reference from the South Park movie lol no need to explain who you are.. Have you not noticed the fans (minus the core fans *waves*) losing their way (maybe yourself included), we have seemed to have lost our sense of belonging (or soul if you would like to call it) because of not having a home to call Wanderland after 3 years which now you can see has taken its toll (also moving into Olympic park was not the best idea but that's another story).. I believe we can regain that at Wanderland again which can only help our team achieve what we hope and expect from them week in and week out.. Let me give you an example of what the soul of our home could do when everyone in Wanderland got behind the team and started chanting for them (and i mean 90% stadium not just the active fans), the semi final of 2016 against the Roar down 3-0 at home, i was in the RBB that night.. After a pen and an own goal plus Maclaren topping it off with a third all before the 25th min, not one of the boys on the field that night dropped their heads as they still believed just as the fans still believed that we could come back that is when we went into overdrive and we were screaming our chants which spurred on the rest of the stadium when Castalen and Santa went to score two before half time.. When Vidosic scored the winner in extra time i do not think there was a bigger moment at the old wanderland, i saw a few younger boys with tears in their eyes of how happy they were of their team and the support they were able to offer them to make it happen, that is what i hope comes back to our new home even tho we don't own it but we never owned Pirtek but we still made it our own! As for the safe standing i can only refer to pictures that have been posted online of the construction of the active side (https://imgur.com/BKaN2kv) it seems like it may by one bay in the middle of the top tier or it could be only the bottom tiers that it is implemented??

Correct, WSW one of three teams who are just one point outside of the top six, all three still very much in the hunt for a top 6 finish. The Mariners are the one team looking completely out of contention, on the bottom, winless, rapidly losing support, everyone's favourite to be the first team relegated when P&R is introduced.

It was only one poor performance. Wsw can make the top 6 imo. However, the absence of Bonevacia is causing problems. O'Doherty needs to step up as well and Riera needs to find the back of the net more frequently. A draw against Perth, a crushing victory against the Nix away from home and a dominant display against the Brisbane Roar isn't bad at all. There is still every chance of them making finals, and this result doesn't mean it's the end of the world.

Sorry I'm not your "Buddy" but that's a name I'm stuck with. It isn't even a contraction as it has one more letter than my name...I don't use pseudonyms on forums. I'm not hard to track down. I agree that the backroom with Popa was good - probably why Hayden Foxe has teamed up with him in the west. I'm not sure I understand what else the stadium will bring. Training will still be at Blacktown and it remains a shared stadium. About the only concession appears to be "safe standing" although I haven't seen that confirmed.

That's exactly right, we was not brought in to create a miracle this season. He was brought in for the future of the club and only a handful of players that prove themselves to him this season will remain at the club for next season

What are you on about??

Mate, do you even watch the games? He gives it his all, especially in the last game were the VIC players could have easily seen yellows and even a red for that one tackle on him but no cards were shown by the refs but he still got up and did his job every single time he got hacked.. Solid player and top bloke on and off the field IMO.. One thing i do agree with is his finishing over the last few games has not been like it was last season but these things happen to players (look at lukaku at man utd ATM) he just to find his groove again also what would help would be players around him opening space for him and to help take the pressure off him being pressed all game like he was last week against the VIC

No he won't be sacked, we'll tolerate an average season for now - but come next season he cannot under any circumstances allow the same quality players to open the new stadium.

Taylor Regan gets just one week suspension for an attempted eye gouge . This is more ridiculous then berisha getting no suspension for breaking O’Donovan cheekbone in the gf . Someone got 4 weeks for spitting in the direction of another player last year , but apparently trying to scratch someone’s eye is a one week suspension. They set the precedent now , so violent contact to someone face is one week from now on . The A league farce continues.

You really need to be asking yourself why this is a supposed bandwagon when the club missed finals last season yet still more people are willing to put their hands in their pocket to be members than Sydney FC can get. New stadium and getting rid of these NPL level players = back to 20k members. Next season the club aims for 25k. We are the only club that has a chance of catching Victory, Sydney FC never will.

If only they could win the ACL every year, their potential would be fulfilled. When you say potential, you mean bandwagon right?

The number one problem they have is Riera, isn't he the marquee player.Average at holding the ball up and heads the ball a bit but otherwise poor finisher, and he doesn't fit the squad they have at the moment. The worst thing about Riera though is how lazy he is, this is what make them easy beats, but every thickhead seems to think he is the good player in their squad.

Building towards a brighter future for the club will always bring about change wither that be good or bad. Bringing in a solid backroom like we did when we brought in Popa is just the start as you need to build from the ground up, along with building our new home & with the new training facilities plus academy our future is very bright compared to other HAL clubs. Our new stadium will bring a lot more than just a new home back to the club.

On what basis does Sydney FC have no potential but WSW do? If WSW were as popular as you keep telling everyone they would pack out every game at every stadium they play at, regardless of where it is.

If they lose to CCM on Friday night then Babbel will be the 1st coach to be dismissed this season
