A response to Kerry O'Keefe from an Indian fan

By Franctony / Roar Rookie

I am a crazy and proud Indian fan who grew up on a full diet of cricket.

I grew up worshipping Sachin Tendulkar. I would bite my nails for the first 30 minutes whenever Sachin came in to bat. I would warm my neck under a halogen bulb to fake a temperature and miss school so I could watch India play.

Hell, I’ve even finished school exams “early” so that I could get back home and watch cricket.

In case you’ve still not got the picture, I’m the stereotypical crazy and passionate Indian cricket fan.

I was watching live cricket on Kayo when Kerry O’Keefe made his railway canteen joke.

Guess what guys; I laughed. I laughed my guts out.

Sports opinion delivered daily

I knew exactly what Kerry meant. It was an impromptu joke directed at the fact that a team made of “Indian Railways” employees actually play first-class cricket.

This was a joke made on Australian TV, for an Australian audience and I can imagine it would be strange if Australia had a cricket team made of Metro staff!

It is irrelevant – even if it sort of questioned the quality of first-class cricket in India – because everyone has a right to their opinion!

I am sure Kerry did not question the quality of the Railways team, he simply blurted out a joke the moment he heard the word Railways!

In no way did I find it demeaning or racist and I loved the mention of railway canteen.

I love Kerry’s commentary. He is knowledgeable, very likeable, speaks well and is so funny he could be a stand-up comedian if he wanted to.

He also comes across as honest, sincere and a genuinely good person.

Hence, the serious overreaction from both those who didn’t get the joke really pained me.

I believe it all started by a tweet from an Australian journalist working for Cricinfo and it then got lapped up by very thin-skinned trolls.

Anyone who reads comment threads on Indian news sites will know that it is filled with tons of abusive and demeaning garbage thrown around by scores of idiots who have nothing better to do than rubbish other people’s opinions.

So my message to Kerry is; ignore the crap that got thrown your way.

Please continue to be funny and make us laugh – I swear it was your jokes that kept me awake during the boring Day 1 of the Boxing Day test.

By the way, I bet even the Railway canteen staff in India can out bat the Sheffield Shield teams of Australia at the moment!

Roger That, sheek You get the scales and the duck I'll get the firewood and Bangers you get the matches. Oh boy! I can't wait for school to restart so I can tell everyone what I've been up to during the holidays. I can't understand it, my dad says the Roar is just full of bitter reactionary knuckleheads who would have believed it?

“Because he did nothing intentionally wrong.”... So just to clarify on that logic, no one should ever apologise if their actions were an accident? What a bizarre comment to say that you’ve lost respect for a man because he showed empathy for people who he’d inadvertently upset. No matter how trivial you might personally find an issue, it’s never a negative thing to apologise for causing distress to others.

Bangers/Lance, You're right, of course. I'm sure Skull was thinking of the money he would lose if he didn't grovel to the trolls. But that makes it even sadder. Skull has to live with his own conscience over this. Not the humorous comment, but the pathetic backdown.

Thanks for your opinion...Uncle Tom! Not a lefty or a chest thumping, jingoistic Indian fan by any means. I'm one of those that took offence to it. To me the jokes were simply unfunny...flat and cringeworthy!!! Replace Cheteshwar Jadega with Marnus Labuschagne...and my reaction would have been the same. Kerry O' Keefe is funny...but his comments aren't.

Faultless logic Bangers obviously the pressure from his employer News Corp has exposed the real Kerry i.e not someone we could rely on when the Putsch comes. I should imagine it was a Maoist faction in News Corp who slipped in this outrageous back down to the virtue signallers. Rupert Lachlan and Jerry must have spat bullets when they found out. Heads Will roll no doubt. Shame, I was fooled by Kerry I rather liked him in my naievety. I like you feel very let down.

Sheek. I’m sure KOK would have been put under “contractual pressure” , to make the apology. The most irritating thing about these types of incidents is , it’s quite often not the people who are the subject of the humour objecting, but a self loathing , virtue signalling third party. Unfortunately for Kerry , he’s submitted, and will now be under their control.

Fractony, Well done. When I saw the headline & before I read the text, I was ready to "give it you", expecting you to be one of these uber-sensitive, politically correct Indian fans who had shrilled against O'Keeffe's harmless humour. But you actually backed him up, which was great to see. Unfortunately, I've lot respect for O'Keeffe due to his squeamish, gutless apology. He should have stood his ground because he did nothing intentionally wrong. In this case, the trolls won, & O'Keeffe demonstrated he has no backbone. Very sad.

Well Bangers if Kerry (National Treasure) O'Keefe hadn't retired himself and then received offers he couldn't refuse from commercial interests he would still be on the left wing dominated ABC. Where he regularly tripped blithely across somebody's line in the sand. His meacullpas were always comedy gold. You and Jimbo seem to have things under control here I'll head over to Cricinfo and keep an eagle eye out for any Bolshevik privations there. Over and out.

Yep i was really pained and i could see that kerry was really hurt by the responses (even though he tried to laugh it off with jokes). I tried to find him on Twitter, and then found Roar! Now hooked on to Roar. what a great site. So refreshing compared to the traditional news organisations.

“there is an eagerness amongst certain sections of the media ( especially the lefty’s on the ABC )“ Since when were Alan Jones, Ray Hadley, Peta Credlin and Andrew Bolt employees of the ABC? They’re the ones you’re taking about right? Getting offended at everything that doesn’t suit their agenda. Ya know, like calling the Premier to sack someone because they were outraged people didn’t want gambling promoted on the Opera House. You numpties just parrot “lefty’s at the ABC” when you have no idea of what it means or if it means anything at all.

Good on you Franctony. As you’ve already pointed out , there is an eagerness amongst certain sections of the media ( especially the lefty’s on the ABC ) to be offended by almost anything , especially if it’s from someone outside their own grubby little conceited herd. Humour is a fantastic human trait , but has been made out to be dirty and shameful . Your opinion and attitude is welcome in this country. Keep enjoying your teams success and enjoying KOK’s humour .

It's a tough gig being a commentator where every word you utter can be treated as gold or more often, in a really negative way. It's refreshing to see an obvious fan, standing up for a man trying to make a living by helping to enhance a spectacle through his words. I am sure O'Keeffe meant no offence but it doesn't take much to set off thin skinned people these days, regardless of race. Thanks for writing this piece and defending one of the better commentators in our game.

If Kerry O'Keeffe had a dollar for every time his surname is spelled incorrectly (even in headlines), he would be a rich man.

Yes one of his flatter jokes. He can’t help himself sometimes. It was harmless anyway, i don’t see what was demeaning. He did not kill anyone. He was not malicious. We have lost our ability to laugh at ourselves these days and the R word is used all too easily.
